DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, January 27th between 4:00 and 6:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts to celebrate Lyle Ashton Harris’ new Aperture monograph Today I Shall Judge Nothing That Occurs\, along with a lively and engaging presentation with guests Walead Beshty\, Charles Gaines\, and Amelia Jones. \nThroughout the late 1980s and early 1990s\, a radical cultural scene emerged across the globe\, finding expression in the galleries\, nightclubs\, and bedrooms of New York\, London\, Los Angeles\, and Rome. In Lyle Ashton Harris: Today I Shall Judge Nothing That Occurs\, the artist’s archive of 35mm Ektachrome images are presented alongside journal entries and recollections by additional contributors coalescing in a presentation of what Harris has described as “ephemeral moments and emblematic figures… against a backdrop of seismic shifts in the art world\, the emergence of multiculturalism\, the second wave of AIDS activism\, and incipient globalization.” The Ektachrome Archive “constructs collective and private narratives to comment on identity\, desire\, sexuality\, and loss” and was included in the 2017 Whitney Biennial. \nAbout the Panelists\nBorn in the Bronx in 1965\, Lyle Ashton Harris received his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts\, and attended the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Studies Program. His work has been exhibited worldwide including at the Whitney Museum\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, 52nd Venice Biennial\, and São Paulo Biennial. He currently is an associate professor of art at New York University\, and is represented by New York’s Salon 94. \nBorn in London in 1976\, Walead Beshty is a Los Angeles-based artist and writer. Beshty was an Associate Professor in the Graduate Art Department at Art Center College of Design\, Pasadena\, and has taught at numerous schools including UCLA\, UC Irvine\, CalArts\, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, and the MFA Program at Bard College. He is renowned for his unique conceptual approach to photography and sculpture and emphasis on the conditions of the production and circulation of images and artworks. \nCharles Gaines received his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1967. In 2013 he received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and presented the critically acclaimed solo exhibition Notes on Social Justice at Paula Cooper Gallery\, New York. In 2012\, Gaines was the subject of a mid-career survey at the Pomona College Museum of Art and the Pitzer College Art Gallery in Claremont\, California. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles\, Hammer Museum\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, and Whitney Museum of American Art. He has been a full-time faculty member of the School of Art at CalArts since 1989. He currently resides in Los Angeles\, and is represented by Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects and Paula Cooper Gallery.\n \nAmelia Jones is the Robert A. Day Professor in Art and Design and Vice-Dean of Critical Studies at USC’s Roski School of Art and Design. This event is free and open to the public. \nRSVP Here \nArchitect Jonathan Ward has dramatically advanced building design and the experiences they create\, leading to unique and unexpected beauty. His body of work – which includes projects for Samsung\, Tencent\, Microsoft\, Alibaba\, Reebok\, Wellcome Trust\, Telenor and UCLA — challenges client expectations and uses a combination of research and intuition to uncover compelling design solutions. \nJonathan has cultivated a learning-based design process. Join us on Saturday\, March 3rd from 2:00 to 4:30 pm for a not-to-be-missed author meet & greet plus book signing of After/Image: Los Angeles Outside the Frame. \nAfter/Image: Los Angeles Outside the Frame by Lynell George is the result of her years of contemplating and writing about the arts\, culture\, and social issues of Los Angeles\, always with an emphasis on place and the identity of the people who live in — or leave — L.A. As a staff writer for the Los Angeles Times and LA Weekly\, Lynell George explored place after place that makes the city tick\, met person after person\, and encountered the cumulative heart of the city. After/Image is her collection of essays\, evocative photographs\, profiles\, and reportage focused on Los Angeles beneath-the-surface—both the past and the here-and-now. \n\nAbout the Author \nLynell George is a journalist and essayist. After/Image: Los Angeles Outside the Frame is her first book of essays and photography\, exploring the city where she grew up. She is also the author of No Crystal Stair: African Americans in the City of Angels\, a collection of features and essays drawn from her reportage. As a staff writer for both the Los Angeles Times and L.A. Weekly \, she focused on social issues\, human behavior\, and identity politics\, as well as visual arts\, music\, and literature. She taught journalism at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles\, in 2013 was named a USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellow\, and in 2017 received the Huntington Library’s Alan Jutzi Fellowship for her studies of California writer Octavia E. Butler. Her writings have appeared in several essay collections. Sales of the publication will fund its translation into the 23 languages that appear in the installations. \nKcymaerxthaere tells the stories of a parallel world through books\, performances\, Internet\, embroideries\, guided collaborations\, but perhaps most distinctively through installations—especially physical markers (usually in stone\, concrete\, or bronze) and far more elaborate historical sites\, which can be up to an acre in size\, that honor the parallel world in our linear world. \nOne can think of Kcymaerxthaere as an illuminated manuscript where every page is in a different location. Prior to Domaen\, Chris was a successful artist in Seattle. He is also considered a pioneer and leader in the field of sustainable design. \nHe is the recipient of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Award in Architecture and was also awarded the State of California and National American Institute of Architects Architecture Firm Award. Over the last ten years\, Mr. Scarpa’s firm has received more than 50 major design awards\, including twenty-one National AIA Awards\, Record Houses\, Record Interiors\, the Rudy Bruner Prize\, five AIA Committee on the Environment “Top Ten Green Building” Awards and the World Habitat Award\, one of ten firms selected worldwide. SUMMARY:An International Art Exhibition Comes to the Helms Design Center
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, April 7 from 5 to 9 pm\, please join us for the opening reception of Bridges between Continents & Memories/ Passerelles entre Continents et Souvenirs\, an International exchange exhibition inside the Helms Design Center. \nBridges between Continents & Memories is a collection of works from three American and four French artists using photographic images as source to create contemporary mixed media pieces dealing with memory and modernity. \nAmerican artists worked closely with the French organization\, Les Seize Agnes\, to strengthen the artistic dialogue between International artists. This collection of work was originally exhibited in France in 2016 at the Marie de Paris 8th\, and the Mu Gallery in Paris. Traveling mostly by car\, she captures the distinctive style and beauty of everyday life in Benin\, Burkina Faso\, Cote d’Ivoire\, Ghana\, Ethiopia\, Senegal\, and Togo. \nHer striking portraits\, landscapes\, and vignettes offer an intimate view of life lived in rural villages\, big cities and along the remote roadways between the two. Men dressed head to toe in elaborate African wax textiles share a motorcycle; ancestral spirits bridge earthly and supernatural worlds in masked dances; the rich red soil dusts the lush tropical jungle; a girl in an over-sized straw hat steers her boat with a boldly patterned patchwork sail; and a gold jewelry-clad Kumasi King performs a warrior dance. His research and design interests include the late baroque architecture of 18th-century Germany\, the English picturesque\, and the construction of architecture as an inanimate subject. Andrew’s recent work has been published in Young Architects 16\, A plus T\, Log\, Pidgin\, Project\, and RM 1000. He is a frequent lecturer and guest critic at institutions across the United States and has held teaching appointments at the University of Michigan\, the University of Queensland\, the University of California\, Los Angeles\, SCI-Arc\, and Otis College of Art and design. Andrew is a Harry S. Truman Scholar\, an Oberdick Fellow at the University of Michigan\, and a Robert B. Pamplin Jr. Fellow at Lewis & Clark College. He received a Master of Architecture with distinction from the University of California\, Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Lewis & Clark College. \nLADG\nEstablished in 2004\, the Los Angeles Design Group (LADG) is led by principals Claus Benjamin Freyinger and Andrew Holder. The founders see their work as contributing to a longer history of ideas\, and draw on this history to craft unexpected solutions to conventional problems in architecture and design. DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, May 3\, from 6:30pm – 8:30pm Helms Bakery District and the Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design are excited to host a presentation and discussion with Julia Körner of JK Design GmbH. \nJulia Körner is an award-winning designer working at the convergence of architecture\, product and fashion design – specializing in additive manufacturing and robotic technology. Her work stands out\, recognized today at the top level of these disciplines\, where it has been featured in National Geographic\, at the Venice Biennale\, Paris Haute Couture and institutions such as the FRAC Centre in Orleans\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to name a few. The constantly intriguing aspect of Julia’s work is the embodiment of a beautiful organic aesthetic. \nBorn in Salzburg\, Austria; Julia received master degrees in architecture from the University of Applied Arts\, Vienna (with distinction) and the Architectural Association\, London. She is currently based between Los Angeles and Salzburg and has previously practiced in London and New York. \nJulia is founder of JK Design GmbH\, specializing in digital design for 3D-Printing. Her recent collaborations involved 3D-Printed fashion pieces developed with Haute Couture Houses for Paris Fashion weeks as well as 3D printed designs for Hollywood entertainment productions. SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Conversation with Photographer John Divola
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, May 12th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a conversation between John Divola and The Getty Museum Department of Photographs curator Amanda Maddox followed by a book signing of his stunning new MACK publication. \nBetween 1974 and 1975\, American photographer John Divola – then in his mid-twenties and without a studio of his own – traveled across Los Angeles in search of dilapidated properties in which to make photographs. Armed with a camera\, spray paint\, string\, and cardboard\, the artist would produce one of his most significant photographic projects entitled Vandalism. \nTo produce this visceral black and white series of images Divola vandalized vacant homes with abstract constellations of graffiti-like marks\, ritualistic configurations of string hooked to pins\, and torn arrangements of card\, before photographing the results. The project vigorously merged the documentary approach of forensic photography with staged interventions echoing sculpture\, performance\, and installation art. Serving as a conceptual sabotaging of the delineations between such documentary and artistic practices at a time when the ‘truthfulness’ of photography was being called into question\, Vandalism helped to establish Divola’s highly distinctive photographic language.

Shanghai\, China) is an architectural designer\, educator\, and curator with a special interest in critical and conceptual practices in art and architecture. She holds a B.A in Visual Arts with Honors from UCSD and a Master of Architecture with Honors from UCLA. She is Director of Materials & Applications and Associate Director of UCLA A.UD Summer Programs. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Architecture at UCLA. She is a co-founder of Spinagu. \nMAXI SPINA\nMaxi Spina (b. Rosario\, Argentina) is the co-founder of Spinagu. He is currently Design Faculty and Applied Studies Faculty at SCI-Arc. He was previously the Maybeck Fellow at UC Berkeley\, Lecturer at CCA\, and Associate Professor at Woodbury. His work has been featured in exhibitions at A+D Museum\, SCI-Arc\, Jai & Jai\, and Wuho Gallery. He received his M.Arch from Princeton University and a B.Arch from National University of Rosario\, Argentina.\n \nSPINAGU is a practice dedicated to architecture\, curation\, and pedagogy\, formed of Jia Gu and Maxi Spina. They produce traditional architectural objects\, such as follies\, houses\, and towers\, alongside non-traditional objects\, such as chess sets\, exhibitions\, and text. Their work is invested in formal exercises as well as thought experiments. They are interested in architecture as a speculative medium through which to explore technology\, history\, materiality\, and form. Originally completed in 1968\, Kent’s International Signal Code Alphabet encompasses a series of twenty-six kaleidoscopic serigraphs integrating scripture\, typography\, image\, icon\, and the maritime flags of the International Code of Signals. As 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of both the series’ completion\, and the centennial of Kent’s birth\, this celebratory publication reproduces this engaging body of work for the very first time in a monographic\, fine art  format”. DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, May 31\, from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Helms Bakery District and the Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design are excited to host a presentation and discussion with Bryan Cantley of Formu:LA\n\nAbout Bryan Cantley of Form:uLA \nForm:uLA is an experimental design practice owned by Bryan Cantley that attempts to blur the indeterminate zone between architecture and its representation. \nAn alumnus of UCLA\, Bryan has lectured at a number of architecture schools internationally\, and has taught as visiting faculty at SCI-Arc and Woodbury. \nThe San Francisco Museum of Modern Art purchased eleven of Bryan’s models and drawings in 2001 as a part of their permanent collection. He is also the recipient of a Graham Foundation Grant (2002) and has held a solo exhibition and served as the International Guest Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture in 2008 and 2017. Cantley’s work has been exhibited at the SFMOMA\, UNCC\, and UCLA\, among other institutions. \nCantley’s solo exhibition “Dirty Geometries + Mechanical Imperfections” premiered at SCI-Arc in 2014\, and his work was featured in AD Magazine’s “Drawing Strength From Machinery” in 2008\, and “Drawing Architecture” in 2013. Cantley has also had drawings published in the Journal of Architectural Education and numerous other international magazines including Surrealism and Architecture (2016) and Celebrating the Marvelous: Surrealism in Architecture (2018).
