SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing With Olivia Bee And Special Guest\, BØRNS
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they host Olivia Bee in a celebration of the publication of her book Kids In Love. Joining Olivia will be her friend and very special musical guest\, BØRNS\, who will present an acoustic set as part of the evening’s festivities. \nOlivia Bee is celebrated for her dreamy\, evocative portraits and landscapes rich with implied narratives of intimacy\, freedom\, and adventure. Her first full-length book Kids in Love from Aperture showcases two bodies of photographic work\, including the series “Enveloped in a Dream” that first brought Bee recognition as a teenager. These images offer a visual diary of girlhood friendship and the exploration of self\, showcasing Bee’s unique ability to convey the bittersweet nostalgia of adolescence on the brink of adulthood and new possibilities. The second\, “Kids in Love”\, is a photographic chronicle of her circle of friends and new loves\, capturing both the pleasures and terrors of the fleeting passage of romanticized youth. While the work continues to evolve\, what remains constant is her seductive use of color and photographic artifact\, as well as the immediacy and charge of each image. \nBee gives voice to the self-awareness and visual fluency of the millennial generation. Experiences are sharply felt\, and easily communicated and shared\, generating visual records that render these memories as significant as the moments themselves. Tavi Gevinson\, founding editor of the online magazine “Rookie” as well as Bee’s frequent collaborator and model writes about the work and about the role of images as social currency in today’s image-driven world. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\n310-458-1499 \n

A fundamental cornerstone of most\, if not all faiths\, is the imperative to protect creation. Pope Francis’ recent Encyclical on Climate Change called on all people living in our common home to be good stewards of the planet\, “to protect the world\, and not prey on it.” \nUS 2014 20 mins.  Director David Braun \nSpecial Guests attending the screening: Director David Braun \nScreens with: Standing on Sacred Ground: Islands of Sanctuary \nParking is located at the Free Valet in the lot on Helms Avenue and Venice Boulevard. \nThe Helms Bakery Festival events run Thursday\, December 3rd through Wednesday\, December 9th.  We hope you join us for a film screening or discussion\, enjoy an art installation or theatre performance\, or come to all of the events around our campus. The Festival umbrella brings together a collective of artists who have much to share about shaping a better future. SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Helms Bakery Partners With VisionLA To Screen " Standing on Sacred Ground - Fire and Ice"
DESCRIPTION:THIS SCREENING HAS BEEN CANCELLED. WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE LATE NOTICE. \nJoin us on Monday\, December 7th from 7:30 – 9:30pm for an evening of films including the screening of Standing on Sacred Ground – Fire and Ice. \nIn Part 1 of the 4-part documentary series Standing on Sacred Ground\, from Ethiopia to Peru\, indigenous customs protect biodiversity on sacred lands under pressure from religious conflicts and climate change. \nIn the Gamo Highlands of Ethiopia\, scientists confirm the benefits of traditional stewardship even as elders witness the de- cline of spiritual practices that have long protected trees\, meadows and mountains. Tensions with evangelical Christians over a sacred meadow erupt into a riot. In the Peruvian Andes\, the Qeros\, on a pilgrimage to a revered glacier\, are driven from their ritual site by intolerant Catholics. Qeros potato farmers face a more ominous foe: global warming is melting glaciers\, their water source. Andes farmers\, scientists and visiting Ethiopians struggle to adapt indigenous agriculture to the changing climate. \nUS 2014 56 mins.  Directed by Christopher McLeod \nSpecial Guests in Attendance: Sacred Ground director Christopher McLeod and Faith Against Fracking director David Braun. \nScreening with: Faith Against Fracking \nTickets are free but space is limited.  Please make a reservation to secure a seat. \nParking is located at the Free Valet in the lot on Helms Avenue and Venice Boulevard. SUMMARY:Helms Bakery Partners With VisionLA To Screen "100 Mules Walking the Los Angeles Aqueduct"
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, December 6th from 7:00 – 9:00pm for an evening of films including the screening of 100 Mules Walking the Los Angeles Aqueduct. \n100 Mules is pure poetry in motion and not to be missed. On the centenary of the opening of the Los Angeles Aqueduct\, Lauren Bon and the Metabolic Studio performed One Hundred Mules Walking the Los Angeles Aqueduct\, a commemorative artist action to connect Los Angeles to its water source. This performative parade of 100 mules traversed the 240 miles of pipelines and canals that bring water from the Eastern Sierras through a gravity-fed system to Los Angeles; passing through three counties and nearly 50 communities along the way took over a month to complete. \nMule power shaped the modern West and was a primary force in constructing the aqueduct\, an engineering feat that took only seven years to complete despite the rough terrain. One Hundred Mules Walking the Los Angeles Aqueduct documents this action with a resolution to move forward into the next hundred years with renewed appreciation for this vital resource. Let it be resolved that the citizens of Los Angeles will do better at utilizing this life-giving resource in the next one hundred years! \nUS 2014 60 min. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, December 6th from 7:00 – 9:00pm for an evening of films including the screening of Soil Carbon Cowboys. Meet Allen Williams\, Gabe Brown and Neil Dennis – heroes and innovators! \nThese ranchers now know how to regenerate their soils while making their animals healthier and their operations more profitable. They are turning ON their soils\, enabling rainwater to sink into the earth rather than run off. And these turned ON soils retain that water\, so the ranches are much more resilient in drought. It’s an amazing story that has just begun. \n\nGuests Attending this Screening: Director Peter Byck \nScreening with: 100 Mules Walking the Los Angeles Aqueduct \nUS 2014 56 min\, Director Peter Byck \n\nParking is located at the Free Valet in the lot on Helms Avenue and Venice Boulevard. SUMMARY:Claudia Borgna's Performance Piece\, "Beauty Parlour" Comes To Helms Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, December 6th at 3:00pm on Helms Walk\, our pedestrian plaza on Helms Avenue\, for an outdoor performance piece by Claudia Borgna called Beauty Parlour\, following the theme of domestic labor she also explores in Domestic Apocalypse. In this piece\, the performer wears a domestic uniform and dusts and cleans trees and plants in a public outdoor area. She engages passersby in cleaning as appropriate. \nArtist’s statement: \nDomestic economies are determined by global capitalist economy. Could the domestic economy affect our social public economy instead? The economy of cleaning might be the solution to clean up an economy of greed that is responsible for the destruction of the planet. \nDomestic work is an indispensable part of life. \nLooking after our surroundings\, caring\, cleaning\, cooking\, gardening\, are domestic duties and part of maintenance work. Renewable repetitions subtly change within the gestures of care\, transforming and maintaining the sustainability of love. The pedagogy of maintenance is my daily practice: my resistance to capitalism. \nParking is located at the Free Valet in the lot on Helms Avenue and Venice Boulevard. SUMMARY:Diana Wyenn's Interactive Performance "Compassio\N" Comes To Helms Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, December 6th from 1:00 – 3:00pm on Helms Walk\, our pedestrian plaza on Helms Avenue\, for Diana Wyenn’s interactive performance Compassio\N. Compassion is an ancient idea upon which all the major religions place great importance. Compassion is also quickly becoming a new age buzzword. \nInvestigating the historical and contemporary uses\, references\, and definitions of compassion through the lens of Climate Change\, this series of short mixed media performances directed by Diana Wyenn confronts our relationship to the term and the ambition\, as well as its actual embodiment and exclusion in local\, U.S.\, and global culture today. \nPerformed outside in unexpected places at unexpected times and using movement\, text\, screens\, intimacy\, and humor\, Compassio\N surprises and compels its unsuspecting audience to ask: What form does compassion take in our capitalist society? If compassion is the response to the suffering of others that motivates a desire to help\, who is suffering? And how much motivation is needed before one helps? \nParking is located at the Free Valet in the lot on Helms Avenue and Venice Boulevard. SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A (Double) Book Signing With Ed Templeton And Ethan Rafal
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 5th from 4:00 to 6:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for another exciting\, double-header with two of their fave phtographers: Ed Templeton and Ethan Rafal. \nEd Templeton \nIn 1999\, the late\, great Alleged Gallery published Ed Templeton’s first book of photography\, Teenage Smokers. In the intervening sixteen years Ed is a firmly entrenched guiding light of the Southern California art community\, and Teenage Smokers has become a sought-after high spot for any photo book collection. \nNow\, hot off the press from Tokyo’s Super Labo is Teenage Smokers 2 – featuring a brand new generation of nicotine-inhaling youngsters. Ed will be signing – and no doubt drawing in – copies of this\, the newly republished Wayward Cognitions\, a few remaining copies of the now sold out Deadbeat Club Common Side Effects Huntington Beach catalogue\, Umbrella\, and his magnificent new travelogue of Santa Catalina Island\, Adventures in the Nearby Far Away. We’ll also have copies of the original Teenage Smokers along with a few vintage rarities available here the day of the event. \nCome celebrate this treasure trove of new and vintage Templetoniana. Sales of Common Side Effects and Adventures in the Nearby Far Away will be limited to one per customer for those attending the event while supplies last. \nEthan Rafal: Shock and Awe \nSan Francisco-based Ethan Rafal has produced one of our favorite photography books of recent years! A complex autobiographical project examining the relationship between protracted war and homeland decay\, Shock and Awe is a meticulously crafted work combining image\, text\, and found objects compiled over twelve years of traveling the United States that blurs the line between author and subject\, and personal versus authoritative histories. Drawing from the traditions of documentary photography and writing set on the American road\, the unique\, hand-made journal was created with transfer prints\, handwriting\, and found materials that were bound in the remains of an abandoned vehicle. This trade edition limited to five hundred copies carefully reproduces every inch of every page conveying the look and feel of the original down to its strap closure. Made by middle-class workers in Spain\, the paper was sustainably harvested in Finland\, and the cloth is from New England. \nThe artist introduces audiences to this work through his ongoing “Shock and Awe Book Tour” which returns the journal to the people and places depicted\, bringing author\, subject\, and viewer into an exploration of the total meaning of the work. The presentation of Shock and Awe is equal parts story-telling\, show-and-tell\, and group discussion featuring for its Arcana stop ample homemade cast-iron walnut pie served with bourbon and milk. \nEthan Rafal’s multi-media works deal with the individual and collective experience of violence\, and the ways in which subsequent representations of violence inform personal and national mythologies. He helps run The Farmstand – an alternative artspace on a farm in Northern California – and collaborates with the Bay Area’s Art For a Democratic Society. \n
