SUMMARY:A lecture and live Q+A discussion with Dana Cuff from cityLAB
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 28th\, for a lecture and live Q+A discussion with Dana Cuff | Architecture as Demonstration: Design for the Long Game\nIn collaboration with the Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design \nLecture is Free and Open to the Public \nRegister for the  Zoom Webinar\n\nDana Cuff \nDana Cuff is Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA where she is also Director of cityLAB\, an award-winning think tank that advances experimental urbanism and architecture. Since receiving her Ph.D. in Architecture from Berkeley\, Cuff has published and lectured widely about spatial justice\, the architectural profession\, and affordable housing. She is author of several books\, including The Provisional City about postwar housing in Los Angeles\, and a co-authored book (in bookstores next year) documenting her innovative cross-disciplinary project at UCLA called the Urban Humanities Initiative\, funded by the Mellon Foundation. Based on cityLAB’s design research\, she co-authored a landmark bill that permits “backyard homes” on virtually all 8 million single-family properties in California (AB 2299\, Bloom-2016)\, doubling the density of suburbs across the state. She and her team are currently working on a wide range of new forms of affordable housing to be co-located with schools. cityLAB recently initiated a satellite center in one underserved neighborhood of Los Angeles\, where a deep\, multi-year exchange with community organizations will demonstrate ways that humanistic design of the public realm can create more compassionate cities. Cuff was the recent recipient of two prestigious awards that describe her career: Women in Architecture Activist of the Year (2019\, Architectural Record) and the international prize for Researcher of the Year (2019\, Architectural Research Centers Consortium). \n\nIntroduced and moderated by Stephen Phillips\, AIA\, PhD\, Principal of Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) and professor\, director\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo) \nFree Parking is available at the corner of Helms Ave. and Venice Blvd. \nPhotos (Left to Right): Image of Dana Cuff\, Image of Backyard BIHOME\, Image of Deep Think.

MILLIØNS conceives of architecture as a speculative medium for exploring the central categories of contemporary life: technology\, politics\, energy\, media\, and information. Their approach insists on an expansive parallel project of technical\, historical and cultural analysis\, which surrounds and informs their work. \nMILLIØNS’ work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions\, including a commissioned furniture set by Friedman Benda Gallery NYC and Chamber\, shows at La Triennale Di Milano\, the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York\, The Architecture + Design Museum of Los Angeles\, the MIT Keller Architecture Gallery\, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, among others. Recent work includes completed and ongoing projects in California\, New York\, Boston\, Germany and Beirut. Recently selected as the winner of an international competition to reimagine the west wing of I.M. Pei’s Everson Museum\, in Syracuse\, NY. Their work has appeared in Harvard Design Magazine\, Flaunt magazine\, Dezeen\, Architect’s Newspaper\, Eflux\, I.D.\, a+t\, Sightunseen\, Azure\, and in a catalog of their work on experimental collective living\, New Massings for New Masses: Collectivity After Orthography (MIT SA+P Press 2015). \nZeina Koreitem is a registered architect in Beirut\, Lebanon\, Design Faculty at SCI-Arc and a Design Critic in Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. John May is Assistant Professor of Architecture and Director of the Master in Design Studies Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. \nPhotos (Left to Right): Image of John May and Zeina Koreitem; Image of model made by MILLIØNS for “Bust” at Jai and Jai Gallery; Image of the Rosenfield Collection cafe and ceramics gallery at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse\, NY.

SUMMARY:Westside Urban Forum Virtual Discussion: After the Pandemic\, How L.A.'s Restaurants and Retail Will Heal
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Wednesday\, June 10th from 2:00 to 3:10 pm. please join Westside Urban Forum in a special\, socially distanced series of online discussions: After the Pandemic\, How L.A.’s Restaurants and Retail Will Heal.  \n Though the Los Angeles region is justly famous for its dining and shopping options\, many stores and restaurants have been operating on thin margins in recent years. Stores have competed with online retailers\, and restaurants have faced rising rents and increased costs. And then the Coronavirus pandemic. \nThe economic devastation to local businesses\, many of which are cornerstones of L.A. civic life and local character\, is evident already. How can these businesses recover? What combination of rent relief\, government assistance\, creativity\, and civic spirit will ensure that they thrive? Will local planners have to rethink their approaches to “activating” ground floors\, and will local cities need to rezone retail units to allow for more uses if incumbent businesses fail and are not replaced? How else might changes to commerce reshape our neighborhoods in the short and long term?  \nPanelists\nMichael J. Berne\, President\, MJB Consulting\nDeborah Kahen\, Senior City Planner\, City of Los Angeles\nJosh Loeb\, Owner\, Rustic Canyon Group\nWally Marks\, President\, WNM Realty \nModerator\nZachary Tindall\, Managing Director\, Streetsense \nWUF is pleased to present this event at no charge\, but it requires registration to participate via Zoom. Donations are gratefully accepted. Please click here to make a donation. \nClick HERE to register. Zoom information will be sent to all participants on the morning of June 10th.

SUMMARY:Westside Urban Forum Hosts Virtual Panel Discussion - Accounting for COVID: Rescuing Our Municipal Budgets
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, June 23 at 1:00 PM\, please join Westside Urban Forum for a virtual panel discussion: Accounting for COVID:  Rescuing Our Municipal Budgets. \nCities are facing an historic financial crisis alongside the COVID-19 health crisis\, with the bread-and-butter sources of local revenue such as sales and hotel taxes having dried up virtually overnight\, and only recently showing signs of a (partial) rebound.  Wealthier municipalities modestly impacted by previous downturns\, such as Santa Monica and Beverly Hills\, are already cutting personnel and programs at an unprecedented scale. \nThe cumulative budget deficit from municipal and State tax revenues lost to COVID-19 is estimated to be as much as $950 billion across the country. Replicating the Great Recession playbook of budget-cutting and temporary revenue enhancements may not be enough to dig out this time around\, and risks prolonging the length of a full economic recovery by several years. \nThis panel focuses on three urgent topics: (1) How much worse will it get\, and what can we expect any recovery to look like (V\, W\, L\, or checkmark-shaped)? (2) What strategies can local governments/public agencies use to address their widening budget holes and mitigate the fallout? and (3) can we count on the federal government to backfill City and State lost revenues through a CARES Act Phase 4 rescue package? \nWUF is pleased to welcome LA City Controller Ron Galperin\, Shavi Sarna\, a financial advisor specializing in public-sector restructurings\, and Jeff Kiernan\, who manages regional support for legislation\, regulations and ballot measures for the League of California Cities. \nPanelists\nRon Galperin\, City Controller\, City of Los Angeles\,\nJeff Kiernan\, Regional Public Affairs Manager\, League of California Cities\nShavi Sarna\, Senior Vice President\, Ernst & Young\, Restructuring Advisory Services \nModerator\nTeifion Rice-Evans\, Managing Principal\, Economic and Planning Systems \nSuggested Contribution\n$10 Members\n$15 Nonmembers \nClick HERE to make a contribution.  Thank you! \nClick HERE to register. \nZoom information will be sent to all participants on the morning of June 23rd.

SUMMARY:Join Us For A Screening of Public Trust on National Public Lands Day!
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, September 26th beginning at 7:00 am and ending at 11:30 pm\, please join us for a free screening of the film PUBLIC TRUST. \nIn a time of growing polarization\, Americans still share something in common: 640 million acres of public land. Held in trust by the federal government for all citizens of the United States\, these places are a stronghold against climate change\, sacred to native people\, home to wildlife and intrinsic to our national identity. But today\, despite support from voters across the political spectrum\, they face unprecedented threats from extractive industries and the politicians who support these endeavors. Part love letter\, part political exposé\, PUBLIC TRUST investigates how we arrived at this precarious moment through three heated conflicts—a national monument in the Utah desert\, a proposed mine in the Boundary Waters and oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge—and makes a case for their continued protection. \nPlease register for your tickets to receive your log in information. \nWishing you all a Happy National Public Lands Day! \nImage Description: Musk oxen have been around for almost two millions years. Along with caribou\, they are the only hoofed animals that survived the end of the Pleistocene era. Today\, they roam the tundra of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska\, in search of grasses\, mosses and herbs in the permafrost.\nImage Credit: Florian Schulz

SUMMARY:Room & Board Features an Artist Each Month in Support of LA Family Housing
DESCRIPTION:Please join Room & Board in support of LA Family Housing (LAFH) in an effort to help our homeless neighbors obtain permanent housing and a place to call home. When you purchase an artwork by the featured artist – this month is Nina Jun – a 50% donation will be made on your behalf to continue the critical and life-saving services LAFH provides. \nFor questions and inquiries about Ceramic Balloons\, please contact the artist at ninajunart1@gmail.com. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nOne day\, Nina Jun saw a Mylar balloon fly into the sky after it was accidentally released from her hand. She felt sad\, her eyes followed the balloon disappearing into infinite space\, and began wondering: what if there was a balloon that could stay with us forever? \nFive days after the party all the balloons had drifted down near to the floor with a deflated memory of past happiness. She thought what if they kept hovering forever there in limbo? \nThese questions of the levity and gravity of the balloon inspired Nina to create ceramic balloon sculptures. Korean born\, Nina Jun received her MFA in sculpture at California State University\, Long Beach. She has had 14 solo shows in the U.S and Korea and her works have been shown in numerous international art fairs. Her works are currently represented by Skidmore Contemporary Art in Santa Monica and BluePrint Art Gallery in Dallas. \n

SUMMARY:Westside Urban Forum Hosts the Mayors Panel
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, February 10 from 12:00 to 1:00PM\, please join Westside Urban Forum (WUF) for the annual Mayors Forum! \nThis is a WUF signature event that brings together the Westside Mayors for a candid discussion of each Mayor’s priorities for 2021\, the land use policy issues of importance to each city\, and provides the opportunity to understand the different ways in which these unique cities are responding to current issues in what is already another extraordinary year. \nIn 2021 our Mayors will be faced with a myriad of issues\, including the central conflict of land use and social and racial equity\, police reform\, and housing and homelessness – all within an environment of shrinking budgets resulting from the pandemic. To begin to address these complex matters\, what are the cities’ near-term responses to retail spaces left vacant by the pandemic? How are cities going to change as a result of the pandemic and what temporary COVID policies would the Mayors like to see adopted permanently (such as encouraging telecommuting to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution\, greater diversity in housing typologies and private outdoor space\, growing park space for all community members\, or allowing outdoor dining to remain permanently)? How are the cities working to address structural racial and social injustices in land use and government agencies’ operations? What measures are cities considering to address police reform and community mental health? What is the outlook for public transit and the extension of the Purple Line Subway? And what does all of this mean for the cities’ plans to address climate change? \nPanelists:\nMayor Lester Friedman\, City of Beverly Hills\nMayor Alex Fisch\, City of Culver City\nMayor Sue Himmelrich\, City of Santa Monica\nMayor Lindsey Horvath\, City of West Hollywood \nRegistration: Registration closes for this Zoom panel on February 9 at 9:00 pm. \nWUF Members                               Free\nNonmembers                                $35.00\nStudent Nonmembers                $10.00 \nREGISTER NOW to be a WUF Member for 2021 and attend all monthly panel events for FREE through December 2021.
