SUMMARY:Little Bite Gallery Returns to Helms with a Solo Exhibition by Melissa Falco Williams
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, July 21st from 7 to 10 pm\, join us for the second installation from Little Bite Gallery inside the Helms Design Center\, presenting Inch by Inch\, a solo exhibition featuring 70+ works of art by Melissa Falco Williams\, as part of the Helms fine art series remnants & artifacts. \nAfter the opening night\, Inch by Inch will be available to the public on Friday\, July 27th and Sunday\, July 29th\, time TBD.  ALL OTHER TIMES\, the exhibition is available BY APPOINTMENT ONLY through August 2nd\, by contacting Alyssa at Info@littlebitegallery.com. \n“My inspiration comes from life\, from every experience I’ve had\, from every person I’ve met. Perhaps I’ve always had a desire to discover a greater connection to the world around me and bring beauty and understanding in moments that can sometimes feel scary and harsh—to find the extraordinary in the smallest details and kindness in every expression. \nThrough art\, I have discovered a place of serenity\, a place of freedom. Creating art has been a pathway to my heart and also to my community. It has given me the courage to embrace a bigger piece of me\, to connect and share with fellow artists and join hands in the spirit of discovery.” -Melissa Falco Williams \n“I first met Melissa three and a half years ago. Her curious\, vibrant approach to creativity always enthralled me. Over the years I’ve witnessed the unabashed expression and truth Melissa conveys through her artwork. Her work makes a resounding mark on all who view it\, leaving us to bask in the glory of it’s unedited expression. You can feel the catharsis\, the freedom and release Melissa feels when she paints. How she makes sense of the world and lovingly adds to it. My hope in presenting her work is to present as many people as possible to this expressive resonance and color\, and the power of Melissa’s honest and emotive movement. Inch by Inch challenges the viewer to look closely\, to feel deeply\, and to express fully. Can you feel the freedom?” -Alyssa\, Director of Little Bite Gallery \nAbout renmants & artifacts\nA well-lived life is often driven by a search to find meaning and purpose within a world that frequently appears irrational and chaotic.  We use our collected experiences — encounters with people\, places\, objects\, literature\, music and art — to develop a personal paradigm\, an internal language that helps us make sense of our significance and define our reason for being.\n\nPlease join us for an ongoing art series that examines the idea of ‘remnants and artifacts’\, the small remainders\, residues\, and unexpected revelations of the artist’s collected experiences as discovered within their body of work and provide us with a possible avenue for a deeper appreciation of the worldview that underlies their creative hopes\, dreams\, and fears.

SUMMARY:L.A.'s New Era of Urban Design with Christopher Hawthorne
DESCRIPTION:For over a decade\, architecture fans have read\, appreciated\, and debated Christopher Hawthorne in the pages of the Los Angeles Times. In addition to critiquing the city’s architectural masterpieces — new and old\, large and small — Hawthorne branched out into a form of academic activism\, sponsoring a series of discussions that he called the “Third Los Angeles.” Third L.A. encompassed the idea that\, with the era of rampant growth behind us\, Los Angeles must embrace a new urban form. Now\, Hawthorne has leapt from the page to the lecture hall and now to City Hall\, where he recently began his tenure as the city’s first Chief Design Officer. \nIn this role\, Hawthorne will guide the city’s efforts to promote good design and improve the aesthetics of the public realm. This vision is surely a work in progress\, and Hawthorne is speaking with Angelenos citywide to discern common goals and visions. This month\, Christopher Hawthorne joins Westside Urban Forum to update us on what his tenure might mean for the city’s architects\, planners\, and developers. We will have a wide-ranging discussion and audience participation to learn about\, and contribute to\, the future of urban design in Los Angeles. \nParking\nAvailable in the adjacent\, interior parking garage at 8711 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City (look for the red banners)\, or ample street parking\, or via the Expo Light Rail line\, one block to the east of Helms Bakery. \n7:15am-9am \n7:15am  Registration\n7:30am  Breakfast\n7:45am  Panel Discussion \nBUY TICKETS\n$50  members\n$65  nonmembers\n$10  student members\n$15  student nonmembers \nPre-registration closes on Wednesday\, July 18\, 2018.  After July 18\, 2018 and at onsite registration the cost will be an additional $10.  No refunds or credits will be provided after this date.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Book Signing + Conversation with Artist Simone Shubuck
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, July 28th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing and conversation with artist Simone Shubuck. The discussion – about her new book\, her ‘Wifey‘ project\, and the relationship between art and food – will be moderated by curator Laura Fried and will include Wifey collaborator and James Beard-nominated pastry chef Natasha Pickowicz*. *And\, yes\, there will be cake. And Yola Mezcal. \nIn the summer of 2017\, Simone Shubuck launched Wifey\, a Brooklyn pop-up that fused art\, food\, ceramics\, flowers\, and bit of retail in an elevated DIY way. During the process\, Shubuck realized that so much of what she was doing directly connected to a show she staged as a student at the San Francisco Art Institute in the early 1990s. Wanting to formalize that multi-decade connection\, she decided to make a book. \nWhile at the Art institute\, Shubuck studied painting\, but probably spent more time tagging on the streets in the middle of the night than in her studio. When it came time to produce her student show\, she constructed 10 cakes festooned with pink ham hocks\, a school of fresh sardines\, a tent of chicken feet\, and live crickets within a hat box within a cake. It was these images that attracted chefs Ignacio Mattos and Natasha Pickowicz – both of New York’s Estela\, Flora Bar\, and Cafe Altro Paradiso – to the project. They became partners and began experimenting with dreamy layer cakes which were served at Wifey to great acclaim. \nAs described by Ella Riley-Adams on Vogue.com: “She had made a paged project before; a short run of zines for Natasha Pickowicz’s bake sale benefit at Altro Paradiso. ‘It had more of a punk vibe\,’ Shubuck says—150 copies\, printed in Chinatown. The new book feels more like a collector’s item: a retrospective of off-kilter cakes\, blossoming drawings\, and character-filled ceramics that charts Shubuck’s creative course. (It’s the ideal gift for the cool girl in your life.) As Alex Wagner writes\, next to a bright yellow page in the book: ‘Simone’s work—on paper\, in clay\, in life!—retains a glorious sense of mess and possibility and freedom.’ Click here to read more about Ms. Shubuck’s book and its New York launch on Vogue.com.

SUMMARY:Join us for a Book Signing + Conversation with Architect Jennifer Bonner
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, September 6th from 6 to 8 pm\, please join THIS X THAT and architect Jennifer Bonner\, Director of MALL for a conversation and book signing of A Guide to the Dirty South – Atlanta inside the Helms Design Center. The Guide will be available for purchase during the event\, as well as inside the Arcana: Books on the Arts showroom. \nPlease RSVP to: rsvp@thisxthat.com \nDrawing on the format of the urban guidebook\, Jennifer Bonner’s A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta generates a new discourse about the architecture of the American South. By guiding readers on a tour of Atlanta\, this project seeks to reclaim a regional identity for cities otherwise deemed to be a “backwoods” by the East and West Coasts. Borrowing from the hip hop industry and recognizing the rivalry between the two coasts\, A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta acknowledges that amidst the NYC-LA rivalry\, the South had its own story to tell\, and redirects our attention to a ‘third coast’. \nSteeped in geography\, historical events\, typology\, storytelling\, and popular culture\, the guide takes idiosyncratic trajectories through the city that urge a long overdue reading of Dirty South regionalism through architecture. Part tour guide\, part architectural manual\, the publication also features oral histories through a set of interviews with prominent architects\, theorists\, chefs\, community leaders\, and hip hop artists\, from architectural historian Mario Carpo to hip-hop group Goodie Mob. \nAuthored by Jennifer Bonner\, director of architecture studio MALL\, A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta takes the reader on a tour of “Rap City”\, “Pop up Surface Lots”\, “Architecture of Quarantine” and a “Geography of Smells”. Wittily designed\, and featuring beautiful illustrations throughout\, A Guide to the Dirty South―Atlanta is perfect for those new to the architectural delights of Atlanta and long-time fans alike. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Author\nBorn in Alabama\, Jennifer Bonner founded MALL\, a creative practice for art and architecture in 2009. MALL stands for Mass Architectural Loopty Loops or Maximum Arches with Limited Liability – an acronym with built-in flexibility. By engaging “ordinary architecture” such as gable roofs and everyday materials\, Bonner playfully reimagines architecture in her field. \nJennifer Bonner is Assistant Professor of Architecture and Director of the Master in Architecture II Program at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. As a recipient of Emerging Voices Award (AIA/Young Architects Forum) two Faculty Design Awards (Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture) and Next Progressives (Architect Magazine)\, her creative work has been published in architectural trade journals including Architect\, Architectural Review\, Architectural Record\, and Wallpaper\, as well as more experimental publications including a+t\, DAMn\, ART PAPERS\, PLAT\, Offramp\, and MAS Context.

SUMMARY:Modern Hand Quilting Workshop with Textile Artist Aneesa Shami
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome our artist-in-residence this summer\, Aneesa Shami\, who will camp out inside the Helms Design Center to continue her work on pieces from her “Syndication” series\, as well as offer a suite of three workshops as part of the Helms fine art series\, remnant & artifacts. \nThese workshops will highlight weaving\, knitting\, and quilting as three major facets of textile and fiber techniques. Each session will dive into a brief\, introductory history of each technique followed by hands-on instruction and experimentation. \nVisit Aneesa during her open studio hours or join us for the final workshop. Participants are encouraged to play\, make\, learn\, and connect with fiber materials and techniques in new and exciting ways! \nModern Hand Quilting\nSaturday\, September 8\n10am – 1pm\n$75 + $15 materials fee \nIntroduction will cover a brief history and evolution of quilting\, with a focus on Wartime quilts\, Modern quilting\, and Art Quilts\, with a brief insight into Appalachian/Rocky Mountain quilts and the Gee’s Bend phenomenon. The hands-on workshop portion will consist of a learning how to quilt from start to finish. Participants will create a “micro-quilt” (approximately the size of one’s hand). Previous sewing experience is a plus\, but not needed. Techniques include basting\, hand-quilting/stitching\, and sewing a binding on. End product is perfect for a coaster\, mousepad\, wall hanging\, tiny textile\, or anything else your creative mind decides. \nAbout remnants & artifacts\nA well-lived life is often driven by a search to find meaning and purpose within a world that frequently appears irrational and chaotic.  We use our collected experiences — encounters with people\, places\, objects\, literature\, music and art — to develop a personal paradigm\, an internal language that helps us make sense of our significance and define our reason for being. \n\nPlease join us for an ongoing art series that examines the idea of ‘remnants and artifacts’\, the small remainders\, residues\, and unexpected revelations of the artist’s collected experiences as discovered within their body of work and provide us with a possible avenue for a deeper appreciation of the worldview that underlies their creative hopes\, dreams\, and fears.

SUMMARY:Opening Exhibition with Artist Liza Philosof at the Helms Design Center
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, November 15th from  7 to 10 pm\, please join us for the opening event of L A Y E R S\, the first solo exhibition by Liza Philosof to take place in Los Angeles. \nL A Y E R S contains paintings made by Philosof between 2015 and 2018\, along with a video made last year during an art residence on Pico Island.  One of the major inspiration sources for the artist was her visit to Pico Island and being surrounded by 3 elements: water\, basalt stone\, and plants. Some paintings are drawn with markers on canvas\, with most of the paintings produced with acrylics during the summer of 2018. \n“I see my paintings as a visual extension of my emotional journey in life. A reflection of the struggles and challenges we all have. Climbing a mountain or crossing an ocean are just metaphors of deep tectonic movement happening in our souls. Nature has endless layers\, as we have. In paintings\, I try to embrace observing nature with an interpretation of what our inner world looks like. I feel that one of my secret missions is to continue to see life in color.” \nAbout the Artist \nLiza Philosof is a visual artist\, art director\, and graphic designer based in West Hollywood and originally from Israel. Philosof is currently working with designers and artists\, but continues to participate in exhibitions\, festivals\, projects\, and partnerships all over the world. Brand collaborations include: Adidas originals\, Absolut\, Heineken\, Insight\, Azores Fringe Festival\, and Cannes Film Festival. Philosof graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem in 2011\, where her experimentation with color and shape depths began. \nFor more info about the artist:  lizaphilosof.com | liza.philosof@gmail.com | eventbrite | Facebook | Instagram \nClosing event: Thursday\, November 29th\, 7 to 10 pm

SUMMARY:Join Arcana Books for a SUPERSONIC Book Signing with author Lawrence Azerrad
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 17th\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a SUPERSONIC book signing with author LAWRENCE AZERRAD. \nWhen the first commercial Concordes zoomed off the runways in Paris and London in the late 1960s\, crossing the Atlantic in just under three hours\, they established a new standard for luxury flight. Powered by 38\,000 pounds of thrust and easily recognizable with its delta wing and drooping nose\, the Concorde jet embodied the pinnacle of aviation technology and industrial design. It quickly became the preferred mode of transatlantic flight for superstars and business moguls alike. \nOpening with a lively history of the jet and how it changed travel\, Supersonic focuses on the look and feel of the Concorde. Photos of the jet’s evolving interiors show how the original\, starkly designed cabin gave way to luxury seats and interiors designed by the likes of Sir Terence Conran and Andrée Putman. Filled with fascinating historical and technical background drawn from the author’s personal collection of more than one thousand Concorde-related objects\, this elegant book offers rarely seen historical photography and firsthand contributions from the people who helped create the Concorde experience from take-off to landing and beyond. Mr. Azerrad will speak and give a visual presentation regarding this charming and vital aspect of Aviation history beginning at 4:30 PM. \nArcana Books Upcoming Events\nSaturday\, December 1st\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM\,  A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF BILL BERKSON \nSunday\, December 2nd\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM\, ED TEMPLETON: TANGENTIALLY PARENTHETICAL \nMonday\, December 3rd\, 6:00 – 8:00 PM\, THIS IS MEXICO CITY – BOOK SIGNING WITH AUTHOR ABBY CLAWSON LOW at the KNEELAND CO. SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Celebration Honoring Bill Berkson
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, December 1st from 4 to 6 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts to celebrate the publication of Bill Berkson’s\, Since When: A Memoir in Pieces\, with a presentation by friends\, family\, and colleagues honoring his life and work. \nBill Berkson was a poet\, art critic\, and joyful participant in the best of postwar and bohemian American culture. He collaborated with many artists and writers\, including Alex Katz\, Philip Guston\, and Frank O’Hara. He was the author of several collections of poetry and criticism\, and appeared in ARTnews\, Art in America\, and many more. Formerly a professor of liberal arts at the San Francisco Art Institute\, he was born in New York in 1939\, and died in June 2016. Since When: A Memoir in Pieces gathers the ephemera of a life well lived\, a collage of bold-face names such as John Cage\, Allen Ginsburg\, and Marilyn Monroe\, parties\, exhibitions\, and literary history from a man who could write “of [Truman Capote’s Black and White] ball\, which I attended as my mother’s escort\, I have little recollection” and reminisce about imagining himself as a character from Tolstoy while tripping on acid at Woodstock. Gentle\, witty\, and eternally generous\, this is Bill\, and a particular moment in American history\, at its best. \nThis celebration launches with a very special tribute to Bill Berkson featuring readings from his works by Moses Berkson\, Constance Lewallen\, DeeDee Gordon\, Karen Moss\, Joan Simon\, Mitch Temple\, Dorit Cypis\, Aram Saroyan\, Michael Smoler\, and Lisa John.

SUMMARY:Join Arcana Books for an afternoon with Ed Templeton!
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Sunday\, December 2nd from 4 to 6 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they host their longtime pal\, Ed Templeton for what promises to be a stellar afternoon of good vibes\, delicious libations\, and holiday gift shopping! \nTangentially Parenthetical is a selection of photographs from Ed Templeton’s vast street photography archive – curated\, arranged\, and then rearranged by the man himself. The follow up to his 2014 Um Yeah Arts survey Wayward Cognitions\, Tangentially Parenthetical picks up where the latter collection ended. By combining intimate\, accidental\, and unconnected moments into one linear piece of work\, he tells hundreds of new stories through the thoughtful arrangement of semi-related-yet-completely-unfastened imagery. “I’m out there shooting photos all the time that don’t necessarily fall under any theme other than general life\,” says Templeton\, “which is a lame title for a book.” With a wink to the absurd\, sandwiched between a cover of patterned parentheses and with an afterword built from his own stream-of-consciousness storytelling\, Templeton delivers a visual mountain from an archive of stunning molehills in which the images are carefully chosen\, shuffled by hand\, and laid out with the dueling impulses of wonder and wit.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts Photographer Mona Kuhn
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, December 8th from 4 to 6 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing\, discussion\, refreshments and festive Holiday shopping with Mona Kuhn and Deanna Templeton\, presented in collaboration with Photographic Arts Council – Los Angeles. \nBorn in Brazil\, photographer Mona Kuhn currently resides in Los Angeles. Through intimacy with her subjects\, knowledge of traditional iconography\, and technical mastery\, Kuhn portrays the complexities of human nature\, both tempting and provoking our imagination. Newly published by Stanley / Barker in the UK\, Bushes & Succulents is Mona Kuhn’s celebration of the female essence – confident\, raw and elegant\, yet confrontational and unapologetic. \nReminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe’s floral paintings\, your eyes wander around the graceful lines\, not knowing exactly what you are looking at. Kuhn’s use of the solarization process reveals human imperfections in the metallic brilliance of the skin\, and brings to the surface a woman’s struggles\, strengths\, and power. The photographer states: “The frame reminded me of early childhood\, at age eight or so\, when I would jump in the shower with my mother. It resonates an adoration and child-like curiosity for what it is to be a woman. My intention is not to objectify the body\, but to celebrate the female body and its essence.” \n

SUMMARY:Join Arcana Books for a Special Performance by Anthony Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Sunday\, December 9th from 4 to 6 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as Anthony Wilson will be performing an intimate set from Songs and Photographs with Jay Bellerose\, Patrick Warren\, and Garret Lang followed by a discussion with producer Joe Harley and publisher Nina Holland of Little Steidl. \nIn the new album and photobook Songs and Photographs – beautifully produced in collaboration with German art book publisher Little Steidl – Anthony Wilson brings together a collection of his songs and 35mm photographs that opens a new chapter in his broadening quest for personal and musical authenticity. \n“Most mornings I wake up and go out wandering with my camera\, sometimes in my hometown of Los Angeles\, often in places around the world where I am traveling on tour. I look\, watch\, and take in the space around me. I’m conscious of my attentive state\, totally absorbed in noticing things. My path determines itself\, each picture leads me to the next. It’s a meandering journey through a landscape or cityscape\, but also through my own personal experience. Often the smallest things are what stop me in my tracks and compel me to point the camera and snap the shutter. In Songs and Photographs\, the visual and musical paths of my process converge into a single work in which the songs and the photographs speak back and forth to each other.”  \nBorn in Los Angeles in 1968\, guitarist and composer Anthony Wilson is known for a body of work that moves fluidly across genres. The son of legendary jazz trumpeter and bandleader Gerald Wilson\, his musical lineage has deeply influenced his creative trajectory\, compositional choices\, instrumental groupings\, and the wide-ranging twelve album discography that blooms out of them. \nUpcoming Arcana Books Events \nSaturday\, December 15\n4 to 6 PM\nTODD HIDO: BRIGHT BLACK WORLD\nBook Signing \nSunday\, December 16\n4 to 6 PM\nEVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT COLLECTING FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY\nPeter Fetterman in conversation with Lee Kaplan
