SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Billy Al Bengston and Joan Agajanian Quinn on September 7th
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, September 7th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, stop by Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing and Q & A with Billy Al Bengston\, moderated by Joan Agajanian Quinn. \nFor more than sixty years Billy Al Bengston has been an innovative and integral part of the Southern California cultural scene. A member of the original group of Los Angeles artists to exhibit at Ferus Gallery\, Mr. Bengston has made a name for himself over the decades in the varied worlds of contemporary art\, surfing\, and dirt-track motorcycle racing. From his early Dentos and Finish / Fetish pieces to delicate watercolors of Dracula bearded irises and beyond\, his work remains remarkably vibrant and ever-inventive. He has been the subject of several major museum retrospectives\, but until now there has never been a single comprehensive book to fully do justice to his prolific body of work. \nAt long last\, from Galerie Neuendorf comes that tome – Billy Al Bengston: Paintings & Watercolors! This lavishly illustrated hardbound volume features hundreds of works spanning 1957 through 2016\, and contains a detailed chronology\, exhibition history\, bibliography\, collections listing\, and more.

SUMMARY:Special Poster Installation Honoring the 100th Anniversary of Bauhaus
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, September 19th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm\, please join us for Bauhaus 100\, a poster installation and reception honoring the work of this important art movement. We are pleased to welcome KCRW host of Design and Architecture Frances Anderton and Art Center’s Gloria Kondrup\, for a discussion highlighting the legacy and practices of the school\, with a Q & A to follow. \nThe posters will be on display until Friday\, October 4th during the hours of 10:00 am to 3:00 pm\, Monday through Friday. Please enter through the interior parking garage located at 8711 Washington Boulevard. \nOriginally an avant-garde art school founded by Walter Gropius\, the Bauhaus name soon became synonymous with revolutionary ideas and techniques that found their way into nearly every aspect of arts\, crafts\, typography\, architecture\, and design. Belief in harmony of form and function over the traditional notion of art emerged from the academic circles of Bauhaus\, bringing about unprecedented change to the contemporary art world of the early 20th century and whose ripple effects are felt one hundred years after the birth of this historic movement. \nBauhaus 100 is a poster campaign illustrative of the impact Bauhaus has had on modern\, creative society. This commemorative project has produced a growing collection of more than 400 posters made by designers from all over the globe who have one thing in common — a desire and willingness to experiment with their art\, connecting them directly to the groundbreaking principles and practices of Bauhaus. Just as in 1919\, when Bauhaus’s revolutionary doctrines first brought together artisans and craftsmen from different parts of the world\, today’s global design community joins forces in an expressive celebration of the unique phenomenon that is Bauhaus. \nThis exhibit evolves and grows with each new artwork that is added to the collection. The deadline has been postponed twice\, and we hope that the new deadline of March 31\, 2020 will allow more and more artists to participate in this poster action. Organized by PosterTerritory\, the Helms Bakery exhibition presents more than 70 posters created by a variety of worldwide artists and designers. \nThe Bauhaus 100 poster campaign is curated by Serge Serov\, AGI\, Golden Bee Global Biennale President. \nSupported by BrandCulture. \nThe Corridor Gallery\, 8723 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City \nFree Valet Parking is located at 8711 Washington Boulevard\, the interior garage adjacent to the venue. \n\nABOUT BRANDCULTURE\nBrandCulture is a brand\, organizational and design consultancy that builds strong brands and cultures. They combine insightful strategy\, inspired design\, leading technologies\, and rigorous execution to create significant brands. BrandCulture is proud to support artistic design initiatives and be a part of the Bauhaus 100 Posters Show. \n\nABOUT FRANCES ANDERTON\nFrances Anderton is host of DnA: Design and Architecture\, broadcast weekly on KCRW public radio station and podcast at kcrw.com/dna. For many years Anderton produced KCRW’s acclaimed current affairs shows\, To The Point\, and Which Way\, LA?\, hosted by Warren Olney. Anderton is a regular public speaker and moderator\, and she curates events and exhibitions; these include “Sink Or Swim: Designing For a Sea Change”\, a critically received exhibition about resilient architecture for vulnerable coastlines at the Annenberg Space for Photography. She has written extensively about West Coast design for publications including the New York Times. Her books include Grand Illusion: A Story of Ambition\, and its Limits\, on LA’s Bunker Hill\, based on a studio she co-taught with Frank Gehry and partners at USC School of Architecture. \n\n \nABOUT GLORIA KONDRUP\nGloria Kondrup’s professional career spans the fields of art\, design\, and education. As a design consultant she has helped evolve extensive branding\, identity\, and packaging systems. Companies benefiting from her expertise include Aon\, Avon\, and Goodwill Industries. As a full-time professor at ArtCenter College of Design\, Gloria has been a dedicated design educator for over two decades\, shaping and inspiring future generations of designers. She instills in her students the importance of ethical design practices\, fairness and equality\, and respect for our natural environment. As the Director of Archetype Press\, ArtCenter’s unique and vibrant letterpress studio\, she redefined the value of typography and analog technology in the digital landscape. \n

For forty years\, Jang revealed nothing of that vast archive until 2001 when he submitted a number of photographs for consideration to The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Once “discovered”\, his work has steadily gained acclaim and over the past fifteen years those images have found a wider audience in a series of museum and galley exhibitions and hard to find books. \nThe artist’s first major monograph – “Who Is Michael Jang?” – is published by Atelier Éditions in conjunction with his first major retrospective exhibition\, “Michael Jang’s California”. Curated by Michael Jang’s long-time collaborator and the book’s essayist\, SFMoMA curator emerita of photography\, Sandra S. Phillips\, the show will be on view September 27th\, 2019 to January 18th\, 2020 at The McEvoy Foundation for the Arts in San Francisco \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts Diane Keaton for a Book Signing of California Romantica
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 26th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they host their longtime supporter\, Diane Keaton\, who will be signing copies of the lovely new edition of her long out of print Rizzoli classic\, California Romantica. \nCalifornia Romantica features the most important\, yet rarely seen\, residential examples of the California Mission and Spanish Colonial styles designed by such illustrious architects as Paul R. Williams\, George Washington Smith\, Wallace Neff\, Richard Requa\, and Lilian Rice\, among others. From whitewashed stucco walls and cloistered patios to tile roofs and sumptuous gardens\, each house shown is a rare masterpiece; splendidly appointed with authentic Monterey furniture\, California tile\, and Navajo rugs. \nIncluded among these magnificent seaside estates\, canyon villas\, and courtyard bungalows is Diane Keaton’s former home in Beverly Hills\, which she thoughtfully restored with noted designer Stephen Shadley\, and for which she has been recognized as a committed preservationist. As the author and compiler\, Ms. Keaton brings her cinematic eye\, a keen sense of natural drama\, and a profound appreciation for the nuances of shadow and light to the elucidation of these buildings\, through the selection of specially commissioned photography. Noted historian D.J. Waldie lucidly explicates the architecture and provides an intimate tour of a historic and distinctly Californian lifestyle. \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Architects Marmol Radziner
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, November 9th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in welcoming Leo Marmol\, Ron Radziner and Mayer Rus for a book signing and discussion of their new release\, Site: Marmol Radziner in the Landscape.  \nCombining style with substance\, this lavish monograph from Princeton Architectural Press is an engaging document of nineteen homes drawn from twenty years of work. For the event principal partners Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner – who maintain an envious reference library\, even by Arcana’s standards – will discuss the firm’s history and projects\, and the making of their new book with the West Coast editor of AD\, critic and historian Mayer Rus. \nThe spectacular houses of Marmol Radziner merge interior and exterior life as they engage the built and natural environment. With lush photography and an expansive format\, Site: Marmol Radziner in the Landscape focuses on the evolving relationship between house and landscape\, revealing what the architects describe as “the gradual erasure of boundaries between indoor and outdoor” spaces. \nThis collection of nineteen houses\, shown in over two-hundred full-color photographs that will make readers swoon\, is organized by habitat – desert\, urban\, canyon\, and woodland – and includes projects in Southern California\, Arizona\, Utah\, Nevada\, and the Netherlands. A foreword by novelist Mona Simpson provides a personal reflection on her experiences in a Marmol Radziner house\, while an interview with partners Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner and detailed descriptions of their projects offer insights into the architects’ philosophy and process.

SUMMARY:A New Vision for the Westside\, a Panel Discussion with WUF
DESCRIPTION:Will the Westside change dramatically or will plans maintain the status quo? On Friday\, November 22nd from 7:15 to 9:00 am\, please join Westside Urban Forum’s breakfast discussion inside the Helms Design Center. \nOne of the many results of the failed\, but influential\, Measure S of 2017 was the City of Los Angeles’s pledge to hasten its historically slow process of updating Community Plans. The stakes have never been higher\, with climate change\, traffic\, the housing crisis\, and myriad other forces bearing down on the Westside. \nWhile the City’s General Plan Framework Element establishes citywide principles for growth and development\, its Community Plans collectively comprise the bedrock of urban planning\, from visionary aspirations down to neighborhood-specific details. The Department of City Planning has completed several Community Plans since 2015 and is now working on its first four Westside updates: West Los Angeles\, Palms/Mar Vista/Del Rey\, Venice\, and Westchester/Playa del Rey. The planning process is being accelerated – to three years rather than what has historically taken up to a decade. All of which may add up to a spirited\, and necessary\, discussion about the future of the community – and a challenge for the city to mediate. \nThis month at WUF\, they will discuss the community planning process\, get a status update on the Westside plans\, and hear about the city’s initial vision for the future of the Westside. They will interrogate the processes for recently updated plans to learn how Westside stakeholders can share their visions with the city and discuss how the plans might respond to the re:codeLA project. Meanwhile\, the plans will have to respond to new state and regional mandates concerning housing targets and\, of course\, will undergo scrutiny from stakeholders\, the City Planning Commission\, and City Council. \nPANELISTS\nShana Bonstin\, Dep. Director of Community Planning\, Los Angeles Dept. of City Planning\nTom Donovan\, Esq.\, Former Chair\, West Los Angeles Planning Commission\nRomerol Malveaux\, Liemert Park Activist and former Dept. of Neighborhood Empowerment Field Director\nMott Smith\, Co-Founder\, Civic Enterprise \n7:15am Registration\n7:30am Breakfast\n7:45am Panel Discussion \nClick Here to Register \n$50 members\n$65 nonmembers\n$10 student members\n$15 student nonmembers \nPre-registration closes on Wednesday\, November 20\, 2019. After November 20\, 2019 and at onsite registration the cost will be an additional $10. No refunds or credits will be provided after this date.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Book Signing With Legendary Photographer Hugh Holland
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, November 23rd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in celebrating photographer Hugh Holland’s latest release\, Silver. Skate. Seventies\, chronicling the local skate scene of the 1970s. And as a bonus\, Arcana Books will be debuting the release of two brand new WAX Posters featuring Holland’s iconic images of youthful four-wheeled abandon. \nIn the 1970s\, photographer Hugh Holland masterfully captured the burgeoning culture of skateboarding against a sometimes harsh but always sunny Southern California landscape. This never-before-published collection showcases his black-and-white photographs that document young skateboarders sidewalk surfing off Mulholland Drive in concrete drainage ditches and empty swimming pools in a drought-ridden Southern California. From suburban backyard haunts to the asphalt streets that connected them\, this was the place that inspired the legendary Dogtown and Z-Boys skateboarders. With their requisite bleached-blond hair\, tanned bodies\, tube socks and Vans\, these young outsiders evoke the sometimes reckless but always exhilarating origins of skateboarding lifestyle and culture.
