SUMMARY:Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre Screens Their Performance of "Technicolor Drip" on Helms Walk
DESCRIPTION:The third in the 1988 series\, Technicolor Drip\, features Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre dancers in the window frames and hanging window/art vitrines of the parking garage where Technicolor Drip by artist Jen stark (2015) is installed. The artwork highlights Culver City’s movie history through the rainbow concept in the film The Wizard of Oz. The title references the historic film coloring process employed in movie making. This work is 12 minutes and will continuously loop between 1-3pm. Later that evening from 8-9pm we will host a screening of the performance on Helms Walk\, our pedestrian plaza on Helms Avenue\, followed by a Q & A with Heidi Duckler\, Jen Stark and Marla Koosed. \nThe performance and screening are free and open to the public though reservations are required. The film masterfully demonstrates how ordinary people can make extraordinary choices to rise above conflict and create so much hope in the process. \nThe Possibility Project is an Australian based social enterprise\, that collaborates with slum communities in India to create a slow clothing label called slumwear108. DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, June 24th between 4 and 6 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they welcome Echoes of Bhutan authors Barry and Barbara Shaffer. \nEchoes of Bhutan is the first fine art publication from Los Angeles-based photographer Barry Shaffer. Compiled during Mr. Shaffer’s visits to Bhutan in 2001\, 2014\, and 2015 as a private citizen\, a photographer for the Tribal Trust Foundation\, and at the invitation of Bhutan’s government and travel Industry\, the stunning photographs are accompanied by written contributions from Dr. Robert Thurman\, Bhutan’s Queen Mother\, Bhutan’s Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck\, Honorable Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay\, National Geographic editor Costas Christ\, and Samten Wangchuk. The book has been selected to receive its Asian release at the “Mountain Echoes International Literary Festival” in Thimphu\, Bhutan in August 2017. All proceeds from the sales of Echoes of Bhutan will benefit Bhutan’s Tarayana Foundation.

He also was a member of the construction administration team for Emerson College\, Los Angeles\, a project which brought together student housing\, administrative offices\, and educational facilities on a dense urban site. The project has since won multiple design awards both nationally and internationally. Jai’s longstanding dedication to the craft and detail of architecture allows W/W to consistently execute the highest level of work possible. \nClayton Taylor\, AIA \nClayton is a founding partner of W/W. He holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of California\, Los Angeles\, and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo. Clayton has worked at a series of well-recognized Architectural Design firms including Coop Himmelblau in Vienna\, as a Project Designer at Morphosis Architects (Los Angeles)\, and most recently
as an Associate at Rios Clementi Hale Studios in Hollywood. At RCHS\, Clayton led design efforts on many creative office and multi-family developments in the Los Angeles area including\, Columbia Square\, Crossroads of the World\, The Telephone Building\, and Flight at Tustin Legacy. He also completed many competitive design proposals for RCHS like the Rancho Cienega Sports Complex and the Southwest School of Art\, which won the AIA Next LA Honor Award in 2013. SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Tabitha Soren for a Talk + Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, April 29th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in celebrating the publication of Tabitha Soren’s thought-provoking monograph FANTASY LIFE : BASEBALL AND THE AMERICAN DREAM. A talk and presentation by the photographer will begin at 4:30. \nIn 2002\, Tabitha Soren first began photographing a group of twenty-one minor league draft picks for the Oakland A’s – young men coming into the major league farm system straight from high school or college. For the past fifteen years\, she has followed these players through their baseball lives spending time on farm teams waiting to get called up to The Show\, with frequent trades\, big breaks\, broken hearts\, day jobs\, long bus trips\, injuries\, waiting around\, calling plays from the dugout\, gum and tobacco chewing\, praying\, bonding\, and aging. It turns out\, getting drafted isn’t the same as making the team\, making the team isn’t the same as playing\, playing isn’t the same thing as a star turn or a star’s paycheck\, and getting paid isn’t the same as having a secure future for when you retire in your early thirties. \nThis project examines meritocracy’s myths and the precariousness of a person’s fate when it hangs by the thread of perpetual self-perfection. In Fantasy Life’s case\, it is professional baseball players who are in that position. But that feeling is not limited to athletes in America. The United States is a striving culture unlike any other. Some of the subjects\, like Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton\, have gone on to become well-known\, respected players at the highest level of the game. Some left baseball to pursue other lines of work such as selling insurance\, and coal mining. Others have struggled with poverty and even homelessness. \nFantasy Life portrays a selection of these decade-plus stories\, gathering together a richly textured series of photographs taken on the field and behind the scenes at games\, along with commentaries by each of the players and memorabilia from their lives from kindergarten-age baseball cards to x-rays of career injuries. It includes a five part short story by noted author Dave Eggers about a fictional minor leaguer that compellingly condenses the roller-coaster ride of the farm team everyman\, from youthful pursuit of stardom through the slog of endless hardscrabble games\, to that moment of realization that success may not be just around the corner after all. Additionally\, ten players from the project have contributed essays for the book about their experiences with success and failure – and how they had to piece together a new identity after their professional sports careers.

She is the founder and principal of Murmur: Architecture and Environments and is associate professor in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA where she currently serves as Vice Chair. Ms. Roberge’s research and professional work investigates the spatial\, structural and atmospheric potential of digital technologies on the theory and practice of building. In graduate level courses in design and technology\, her teaching emphasizes innovative approaches to material\, computation\, and manufacturing as opportunities to expand the formal vocabulary and spatial implications of building envelopes and assemblies. In recognition of her distinctive work\, she was selected for the prestigious 2016 Emerging Voices Program by the Architectural League of New York. In 2015 her installation for the SCI-Arc Gallery\, En Pointe\, was awarded an AIA design merit award. In 2011 Murmur’s proposal for the Succulent House received an AIA Next LA design merit award. The formal compositions of his still lifes bring attention to the banal object form; tissue paper\, flower\, and in between the exploration of sculptural arrangements. Smith’s portrait work commands attention – bringing the viewer up close up to his subjects – whether they are photographed in the studio or quickly on the streets. These powerful portraits act as a metronome throughout the entire book\, grounding the audience. The title reveals the artist’s engagement with institutional critique\, and plays with the discourse that is commonly used in art conversations. A Sort of Looking is in fact Lenard Smith’s own looking\, and not a “sort of”\, but exactly how he is able to view the world in front of his lens just as he sees it.\n     \n  \n

He has been featured in many design related publications and has exhibited his design work in venues across the United States\, Europe and Asia. He is founder and principal of Tom Wiscombe Architecture\, an internationally recognized design practice. His work stands out in terms of its mysterious figural features\, its alluring graphic qualities\, and its tectonic inventiveness. \nWiscombe has developed an international reputation through winning competition entries\, exhibitions of work at major cultural institutions\, and publications worldwide. In 2014\, Wiscombe began planning and design of the Main Museum of Los Angeles Art with Tom Gilmore\, the developer known for leading the re-vitalization of downtown Los Angeles. This project involves 105\,000 square feet of renovation and new construction beneath\, inside of\, and on top of several historical bank buildings. In 2016\, Wiscombe\, together with Orange Barrel Media\, MOCA\, and Imaginary Forces\, won the West Hollywood Sunset Spectacular competition\, a new form of billboard for the 21st century. In 2014\, Wiscombe also received Second Place in the international competition for the Kinmen Passenger Service Center\, Taiwan. In 2011\, Wiscombe won first place in the competition for the 123\,000 square meter. Chinese National Games Civic Sports Arena in Shenyang.\n \nWiscombe is Chair of the Bachelor of Architecture Program at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)\, where he has taught for over 10 years. Wiscombe has taught Advanced Research studios as Visiting Professor at PennDesign (U. Penn) for 4 years\, and in 2012\, held the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship at Yale University. He has published texts on architectural theory in journals such as AD\, Project\, and LOG. His work is part of the permanent collection of the FRAC Centre Paris\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, MoMA San Francisco\, and MoMA New York.\n \nPreviously\, Wiscombe worked for Coop Himmelb(l)au\, where he was the right hand of Principal Wolf Prix for over 10 years. He was responsible for multiple international projects and large project teams from competition through realization. Notably\, he was Chief Designer for the UFA Cinema Center\, Dresden\, BMW Welt\, Munich\, and the Lyon Museum of Confluences\, known as three of the most important works of contemporary architecture.

SUMMARY:Woodbury College Hosts a Discussion on Womanhouse and WomEnhouse: A 20-Year Perspective on Feminism and Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Free\n45 years ago\, from January 30 to February 28\, 1972\, Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized a feminist art installation and performance space called Womanhouse\, located in an abandoned Victorian house near CalArts. 20 years ago a group of 24 female artists\, architects\, poets\, art historians\, and cultural theorists derived inspiration from Womanhouse in their design of a collaborative\, multi-authored website that explores the politics of domesticity and gender relations through virtual “rooms” and conceptual domestic “spaces.” WomEnhouse proposed that\, just as the domestic sphere is no longer separated from the public world of capital\, so too the “feminine” (and feminism) must expand into a cyberpolitics that addresses the multivalent vicissitudes of identity formation and domesticity at the turn of the millennium. \nFounding members of WomEnhouse\, Annie Chu\, Christina Magar\, and Pat Morton\, will discuss the past\, present\, and future of the ideological and symbolic conflation of women and houses through the formative lens of this groundbreaking website. With an estimated 750\,000 people attending the Los Angeles Women’s March on January 21\, 2017\, and recent publications concerning the absence of women in architecture\, questions surrounding female bodies in public space are as relevant to address on February 3\, 2017 as they were on January 30\, 1972. SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Special Workshop With Christina Kim
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 8th at 11:30AM\, please join us at Arcana: Books on the Arts for a special workshop with Christina Kim to learn to make yo-yo puffs! \nA yo-yo puff is a circle of fabric gathered around its edges into a “puff” used for embellishing quilts and clothing. First\, a circle is drawn on a piece of cloth\, cut out\, and stitched with thread around the outside of the folded edge while turning a tiny hem as you go. The thread is pulled\, gathering the fabric into a puff\, then knotted. A traditional form of recycling thought to date back centuries\, yo-yo or Suffolk puffs\, as they are sometimes called in England\, are best known in the United States for their use in Depression-era quilting practice. \nChristina attempted her first yo-yo puffs creation\, a coverlet\, in high school by following instructions in an issue of Seventeen magazine. For a project in 2013 evoking the transformation of winter to spring\, 10\,000 puffs dip-dyed and hand-painted in subtle gradients of sky\, snow\, and cherry blossom colors were made for an 18 window installation in Tokyo.
