Manufacturing can now happen on a desktop as easily as in a home workshop. The benefits of stepping away from a computer to work with your hands continues to gain influence in business and culture. His interdisciplinary work has been recognized by AIGA and the Type Directors Club. He has been featured in many design related publications and has exhibited his design work in venues across the United States\, Europe and Asia. Andrew is currently teaching Advanced Typography and The History of Graphic Design at California State University\, Long Beach. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWill Ayers is the Founder/Creative Director of fashion label WILLIAM; and the Principal of Design for the signage and wayfinding studio GNU Group. He is founder and principal of Tom Wiscombe Architecture\, an internationally recognized design practice. His work stands out in terms of its mysterious figural features\, its alluring graphic qualities\, and its tectonic inventiveness. \nWiscombe has developed an international reputation through winning competition entries\, exhibitions of work at major cultural institutions\, and publications worldwide. In 2014\, Wiscombe began planning and design of the Main Museum of Los Angeles Art with Tom Gilmore\, the developer known for leading the re-vitalization of downtown Los Angeles. This project involves 105\,000 square feet of renovation and new construction beneath\, inside of\, and on top of several historical bank buildings. In 2016\, Wiscombe\, together with Orange Barrel Media\, MOCA\, and Imaginary Forces\, won the West Hollywood Sunset Spectacular competition\, a new form of billboard for the 21st century. In 2014\, Wiscombe also received Second Place in the international competition for the Kinmen Passenger Service Center\, Taiwan. In 2011\, Wiscombe won first place in the competition for the 123\,000 square meter. Chinese National Games Civic Sports Arena in Shenyang.\n \nWiscombe is Chair of the Bachelor of Architecture Program at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)\, where he has taught for over 10 years. Wiscombe has taught Advanced Research studios as Visiting Professor at PennDesign (U. Penn) for 4 years\, and in 2012\, held the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship at Yale University. He has published texts on architectural theory in journals such as AD\, Project\, and LOG. His work is part of the permanent collection of the FRAC Centre Paris\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, MoMA San Francisco\, and MoMA New York.\n \nPreviously\, Wiscombe worked for Coop Himmelb(l)au\, where he was the right hand of Principal Wolf Prix for over 10 years. He was responsible for multiple international projects and large project teams from competition through realization. Notably\, he was Chief Designer for the UFA Cinema Center\, Dresden\, BMW Welt\, Munich\, and the Lyon Museum of Confluences\, known as three of the most important works of contemporary architecture.

DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again when you get to visit Arcana: Books on the Arts during the Printed Matter’s Los Angeles Art Book Fair at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. Please check the event website for complete hours. \nBeginning with a preview on Thursday\, 2/23 through Sunday\, 2/26\, you will find them at Booth P05 with another enticing assortment of rarities including Pop and Conceptual artist books and catalogues\, (maga)’zines\, artworks + multiples\, and an array of coveted posters\, announcements\, and ephemera. It’s a unique opportunity to shop many of the exquisite\, inspiring\, and rarely-seen items from the Arcana hidden-recesses and flat files. \nIn addition\, they will be hosting two great book signings during the festivities! At Thursday night’s opening benefit\, renowned gallerist\, archivist\, and editor Johan Kugelberg will be signing copies between 7:00 and 8:00 PM of his recent publication God Save Sex Pistols – the unseen and definitive visual history of the incendiary punk band. Their projects to date include speculative cultural buildings\, indoor and outdoor environments\, social housing in Mexico\, as well as objects to be viewed or used. In 2014\, Pita & Bloom were called “two female visionaries” in Architecture Magazine’s Next Progressives\, and they were selected as one of five finalists of the MoMA PS1 YAP competition. Recently they were selected as one of twelve teams to represent the U.S. Pavilion’s exhibit\, The Architectural Imagination\, at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.

DESCRIPTION:Free\n45 years ago\, from January 30 to February 28\, 1972\, Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro organized a feminist art installation and performance space called Womanhouse\, located in an abandoned Victorian house near CalArts. 20 years ago a group of 24 female artists\, architects\, poets\, art historians\, and cultural theorists derived inspiration from Womanhouse in their design of a collaborative\, multi-authored website that explores the politics of domesticity and gender relations through virtual “rooms” and conceptual domestic “spaces.” WomEnhouse proposed that\, just as the domestic sphere is no longer separated from the public world of capital\, so too the “feminine” (and feminism) must expand into a cyberpolitics that addresses the multivalent vicissitudes of identity formation and domesticity at the turn of the millennium. \nFounding members of WomEnhouse\, Annie Chu\, Christina Magar\, and Pat Morton\, will discuss the past\, present\, and future of the ideological and symbolic conflation of women and houses through the formative lens of this groundbreaking website. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 8th at 11:30AM\, please join us at Arcana: Books on the Arts for a special workshop with Christina Kim to learn to make yo-yo puffs! \nA yo-yo puff is a circle of fabric gathered around its edges into a “puff” used for embellishing quilts and clothing. First\, a circle is drawn on a piece of cloth\, cut out\, and stitched with thread around the outside of the folded edge while turning a tiny hem as you go. The thread is pulled\, gathering the fabric into a puff\, then knotted. A traditional form of recycling thought to date back centuries\, yo-yo or Suffolk puffs\, as they are sometimes called in England\, are best known in the United States for their use in Depression-era quilting practice. \nChristina attempted her first yo-yo puffs creation\, a coverlet\, in high school by following instructions in an issue of Seventeen magazine. For a project in 2013 evoking the transformation of winter to spring\, 10\,000 puffs dip-dyed and hand-painted in subtle gradients of sky\, snow\, and cherry blossom colors were made for an 18 window installation in Tokyo. DESCRIPTION:Free\nPlease join Arcana: Books on the Arts on Friday\, December 16th from 6 to 8PM\, to celebrate Christina Kim’s publication of dosa glossary along with a special month-long installation inside their store. \nChristina Kim is a Los Angeles-based designer who is the co-founder of dosa. Textiles play a central role in her design practice\, which ranges from housewares and clothing to temporary installations and architectural projects. This year\, she has created a public art piece for the APAP5 art triennial in Anyang\, Korea\, a four-month installation at the Museo Textil de Oaxaca in Mexico\, and collaborated with architect Peter Zumthor for the Venice Architecture Biennale. Her work is currently on display as part of the three-person “Scraps: Fashion\, Textiles and Creative Reuse” exhibition at New York’s  Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum. \ndosa glossary is a beautiful one hundred and eight page gazette designed by Christina with Green Dragon Office of Los Angeles and printed by Sankei Shinbun in Tokyo. With one hundred and four entries\, it is a “collection of techniques\, textiles\, people and organizations involved with dosa\, past and present. Information is based on our notes from the field – insights gained working side by side with artisans\, knowledge shared with us firsthand and reference material from books picked up along our travels.” \nChristina will sign this limited edition piece at Arcana the night of the opening.  Her accompanying site-specific installation is a visual and sometimes tactile reflection of the entries and concepts illustrated in the glossary that will be a magical and playful environment in which to discover dosa from a to z and the creative connections\, both carefully considered and wondrously serendipitous\, that it inspires.

SUMMARY:Donna Sternberg & Dancers Perform On Helms Walk
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, November 5th please join us for a special presentation by Donna Sternberg & Dancers of Bodies of Water\, a site-specific performance that weaves together dance\, music\, spoken word\, and art installation to examine the timely issue of water. Two performances of Bodies of Water\, at 12 noon and again at 2PM\, will take place in front of our over-sized water faucet fountain on Helms Walk\, our pedestrian plaza on Helms Avenue between Washington and Venice Boulevards.  Admission is free and open to the public. \nAlong with soundscape artist Rima Snyder and installation artist Moses Hacmon\, Donna Sternberg & Dancers will explore the political\, historical and aesthetic aspects of water.  “Water\, the giver of life\, connects us to the most elemental aspects of the earth as well as to each other in a dance of co-existence.”  Hacmon’s breathtaking\, haunting collection of photographic images of water have been made into 18 large panels\, 4 X 8 feet\, that will be displayed as a backdrop to the dancers.  Live musicians will perform music composed by Snyder\, who has also created a recorded soundscape that includes poetry.  This performance is made possible\, in part\, by a Culver City Performing Arts Grant. \nAbout the Artists \nFounded in 1985\, Donna Sternberg & Dancers (DS&D) is a non-profit contemporary dance company that has premiered over 80 works\, including 8 full evening-length performances.  Discovery is our passion and we believe the act of discovery to be transformative.  The company performs in site-specific locations such as parks\, galleries\, libraries and on the beach as well as in traditional theaters.  DS&D has performed throughout California\, and is the resident guest artist at Rancho La Puerta in Tecate\, Mexico.  It has been featured in publications such as Dance Magazine\, Dance Spirit\, Los Angeles Times\, radio and television (PBS\, City TV).  The company has received funding from state and local governmental agencies\, businesses and foundations. Jessica Abrams of exploredance.com states:  “Donna Sternberg’s talent (is) a maker of dances as technically stunning as they are dramatically resonant.  Sternberg’s dancers are incredible technicians\, but it is their dramatic presence that (makes) them stellar performers.” \nRima Snyder is a composer\, singer and audio editor.  She has a BA in music from Pomona College and an MFA in music composition from the California Institute of the Arts.  She has over 25 years of experience in the audio industry\, including 12 years at National Public Radio as an audio engineer and assistant producer.  Rima does audio post production for radio documentaries\, music and arts features\, and sound effects editing for film.  She has composed many works for chorus and chamber ensembles. \nMoses Hacmon\, born in 1977 in Tel-Aviv\, Israel\, is an artist and architect.  He studied cinematography and fine art at Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel-Aviv. In 2006 Moses completed his B.Arch with AIA honors award\, from SCI Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture). He has spent ten years studying water’s composition\, properties\, and movement\, developing a photographic technique that captures the hidden life of this substance for the first time. This technique\, named Faces of Water\, exposes the movement of life within water and its infinite form.  He has produced a book\, Faces of Water that includes his breathtaking photos of water using his unique technique.  www.facesofwater.com

DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 15th from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they welcome The LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design in partnership with Verso Books to present a conversation about the history of the US / Mexico border and the militarization of border walls around the world on the occasion of the launch of Reece Jones’ Violent Borders: Refugees and the Right to Move. Jones\, an expert on international border security projects and a geographer at the University of Hawaii\, will discuss his book with architect Rene Peralta. \nViolent Borders breaks down the contradictions of living in a globalized world that simultaneously attempts to limit the free movement of people. Jones travels the border regions of the world\, documenting the billions of dollars spent on border security projects\, and their dire consequences for the majority of the people in the world. While the poor are restricted by the lottery of birth to slums and the aftershocks of decolonization\, the wealthy travel freely\, exploiting pools of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations. \nThe US / Mexico border – a major focus of the book – is a perfect example of the global hardening of borders. Over the past thirty years\, many borders have been transformed into militarized security spaces through increased funding\, deployments of additional guards\, and construction of walls and surveillance infrastructure. While two-thirds of the border with Mexico remains unfenced\, the federal fences are products of the relatively recent 2006 Secure Fence Act\, and the Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to build a wall on the remaining section of the border has been a major issue of the presidential election. Jones will make the case that borders are not the answer to our problems\, and end on a simple\, yet important idea: borders need not be a natural part of the human world. \nReece Jones is a Professor of Geography at the University of Hawaii in Manoa\, and the author of Border Walls\, published by Zed Books in 2013. He is an award-winning scholar whose work has been featured in Time Magazine\, The Economist\, and Vice who is often called on to comment on border crises by publications such as the New York Times. \nRene Peralta is the co-founder of the Tijuana-based architectural firm Generica as well as the Director of the Architecture\, Landscape + Urbanism program at the Woodbury University School of Architecture in San Diego. His recent work has been directed toward the research of social and cultural forms of urban border between the cities of Tijuana\, Mexico and San Diego\, California.

DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, October 13th from 5 to 7PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts and KMWstudio for an L.A.-centric conversation between Paul Ruscha and photographer Lloyd Ziff to celebrate the publication of the lovely New York / Los Angeles\, Photographs: 1967-2015. The discussion will be followed by a book signing. \nNew York / Los Angeles\, Photographs: 1967-2015 is a remarkable collection of compelling images of life in two of America’s most exciting cities\, as seen through the eye of photographer Lloyd Ziff. This lovely two volume set – newly published by KMWstudio – encompasses more than forty years of black and white and color photography. As both cities change before Ziff’s inquiring lens\, his unique vision emerges\, amused and ironic\, finding beauty and surprise in daily urban life. \nAbout Lloyd Ziff\nSince 2000\, Ziff has made photography the focus of his career. He has had one man shows at New York’s Danziger Gallery and Earl McGrath Gallery in Los Angeles. His photographs have been included in Patti Smith’s autobiography\, Just Kids\, and The Spirit of Family by Al and Tipper Gore as well as in Blind Spot\, Interview\, Kid’s Wear (Germany)\, New York\, Rolling Stone\, and The New York Times Magazine. Ziff’s work is included in the permanent collections of The Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, The Palm Springs Art Museum\, and The International Center of Photography. In 1999\, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, New York\, his alma mater. \nAbout Paul Ruscha\nPaul Ruscha is a photographer\, calligrapher\, and sometimes a writer. His book\, Full Moon\, published by Steidl\, is an eclectic overview of his personal art collection and of the artists he collects. In 1973\, after thirty years as a native of Oklahoma City\, he moved to Los Angeles to work for his brother\, Edward\, where he presently documents all of his studio’s artistic production. He met Lloyd Ziff in L.A. in 1973 and they have been close friends ever since. \n
