DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, June 23 at 1:00 PM\, please join Westside Urban Forum for a virtual panel discussion: Accounting for COVID:  Rescuing Our Municipal Budgets. \nCities are facing an historic financial crisis alongside the COVID-19 health crisis\, with the bread-and-butter sources of local revenue such as sales and hotel taxes having dried up virtually overnight\, and only recently showing signs of a (partial) rebound.  Wealthier municipalities modestly impacted by previous downturns\, such as Santa Monica and Beverly Hills\, are already cutting personnel and programs at an unprecedented scale. \nThe cumulative budget deficit from municipal and State tax revenues lost to COVID-19 is estimated to be as much as $950 billion across the country. Replicating the Great Recession playbook of budget-cutting and temporary revenue enhancements may not be enough to dig out this time around\, and risks prolonging the length of a full economic recovery by several years. \nThis panel focuses on three urgent topics: (1) How much worse will it get\, and what can we expect any recovery to look like (V\, W\, L\, or checkmark-shaped)? In addition to his professional experience\, Mr. Collins is the President of the Southern California Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects\, a member of the AIA-LA committee on Affordable Housing\, and a guest lecturer at USC Viterbi School of Engineering\, USC School of Architecture\, Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc)\, Cal Baptist University\, Santa Monica College\, California State University at Long Beach\, and Mt. He has taught as an adjunct professor at Long Beach City College and holds an MArch Degree from UCLA\, and a BArch from Cornell. \nAlvin Huang\, AIA\, NOMA is a Los Angeles based architect with a global profile. He is an award-winning architect\, designer\, and educator specializing in the integrated application of material performance\, emergent design technologies and digital fabrication in contemporary architectural practice. He is the founder and principal of Synthesis Design + Architecture and an Associate Professor at the University of Southern California\, where he is also the Director of Graduate and Post-professional Architecture. Huang’s design work has been published and exhibited widely and has gained international recognition with over 40 distinctions at local\, national\, and international levels including being selected as one of 50 global innovators under the age of 50 by Images Publishing in 2015\, being featured as a “Next Progressive” by Architect Magazine in 2014\, and being named one of Time Magazine’s 25 Best Inventors of 2013. \nRoger Sherman FAIA\, leads the permanent supportive and affordable housing initiative at Gensler. He brings over 30 years of residential experience\, beginning with the exhibition and book he authored\, “Re American Dream: Six New Housing Prototypes for Los Angeles” in 1995. Also Founder and Co-Director of acclaimed UCLA urban thinktank cityLAB\, Roger’s group at Gensler is currently at work on over 800 units of housing ranging from workforce to moderate income\, transitional to family\, permanent supportive to emergency shelters. Clients include private developers (Gilmore Associates); non-profits (Skid Row Housing Trust\, Downtown Womens Center\, American Family Housing\, FlyAway Homes); and government agencies (City of L.A.\, County of L.A.\, City of Santa Monica). Sherman has also led Gensler’s housing group into creative collaborations with a wider range of partners such as the National Carpenters’ Union (Foundation); L.A. County Fairplex; Woodbury University School of Architecture; and service providers The People Concern and ImagineLA. \nLance Simon is a Principal of Egan/Simon architecture and is a leader in transforming neighborhood design. After receiving his degree from the University of Southern California\, Lance moved to Kentucky and joined Richardson Associates Architects (RAA)\, a regional leader in improving quality of rural life. Lance later moved to the urban scene of Miami\, Florida. Working for world-renowned firms\, including Arquitectonica\, he focused on transforming neighborhoods into new urban landscapes with iconic architectural design. His award-winning design and project management vision continues to contribute to this internationally recognized architectural mecca. In 2013 Lance was invited by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) to present at Dwell on Design. The presentation PRO Bono: How Design is Reinventing Los Angeles encouraged designers to “do something bigger” than their own interests in order to improve their communities. He is a member of the Shelter Partnership Board of Directors\, Southern California Association on Non-Profit Housing; the U.S. Green Building Council; and the Herman Miller Advisory Council. \nModerated by: \nFrances Anderton is host of DnA: Design and Architecture\, a weekly radio show broadcast on KCRW NPR station in Los Angeles. Anderton also curates events and exhibitions. She has served as correspondent for the New York Times and Dwell magazine. Her books include Grand Illusion: A Story of Ambition\, and its Limits\, on LA’s Bunker Hill (UCS School of Architecture\, 2011)\, and her honors include the Esther McCoy 2010 Award for educating the public about architecture and urbanism. \nEletrice Harris is a proud native Chicagoan. With high energy\, enthusiasm\, and passion she practices\, mentors\, and teaches Architecture. Eletrice has over 20 years of experience as a Project Manager\, administrator\, and architect and has a true passion for the development of young minority students interested in architecture and architectural studies. Eletrice is the Director of the Southern California NOMA Chapter Summer Camp and the SoCal Student Chapter Liaison. How can these businesses recover? What combination of rent relief\, government assistance\, creativity\, and civic spirit will ensure that they thrive? MILLIØNS conceives of architecture as a speculative medium for exploring the central categories of contemporary life: technology\, politics\, energy\, media\, and information. Their approach insists on an expansive parallel project of technical\, historical and cultural analysis\, which surrounds and informs their work. \nMILLIØNS’ work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions\, including a commissioned furniture set by Friedman Benda Gallery NYC and Chamber\, shows at La Triennale Di Milano\, the Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York\, The Architecture + Design Museum of Los Angeles\, the MIT Keller Architecture Gallery\, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, among others. Recent work includes completed and ongoing projects in California\, New York\, Boston\, Germany and Beirut. Recently selected as the winner of an international competition to reimagine the west wing of I.M. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 28th\, for a lecture and live Q+A discussion with Dana Cuff | Architecture as Demonstration: Design for the Long Game\nIn collaboration with the Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design \nLecture is Free and Open to the Public \nRegister for the  Zoom Webinar\n\nDana Cuff \nDana Cuff is Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA where she is also Director of cityLAB\, an award-winning think tank that advances experimental urbanism and architecture. Since receiving her Ph.D. in Architecture from Berkeley\, Cuff has published and lectured widely about spatial justice\, the architectural profession\, and affordable housing. She is author of several books\, including The Provisional City about postwar housing in Los Angeles\, and a co-authored book (in bookstores next year) documenting her innovative cross-disciplinary project at UCLA called the Urban Humanities Initiative\, funded by the Mellon Foundation. Based on cityLAB’s design research\, she co-authored a landmark bill that permits “backyard homes” on virtually all 8 million single-family properties in California (AB 2299\, Bloom-2016)\, doubling the density of suburbs across the state. She and her team are currently working on a wide range of new forms of affordable housing to be co-located with schools. cityLAB recently initiated a satellite center in one underserved neighborhood of Los Angeles\, where a deep\, multi-year exchange with community organizations will demonstrate ways that humanistic design of the public realm can create more compassionate cities. His research is on novel methods of urban modeling and simulation\, future mobility and decentralized public participation. In recent years\, Noyman coordinated and deployed a worldwide network of City Science Living-Labs (in Boston\, Hamburg\, Shanghai\, Andorra and Helsinki to name a few) in an effort to confront his group’s work with real-world challenges. His work received awards from the European Commission\, the OECD\, the Israeli Gov.\, was featured by The Guardian\, 60 Minutes\, The New York Times and was displayed in exhibitions\, conferences and summits worldwide. Since 2002 his New York City firm\, Mark Foster Gage Architects\, has combined the assets of a fully licensed architectural firm with the use of emerging technologies for clients such as Lady Gaga\, Intel\, Google\, Diesel\, W Hotels\, Samsung\, and The Coachella Music Festival. Gage’s work has been exhibited in museums internationally including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, the Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago\, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta\, the National Gallery of Art in Osaka\, the Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Frac Center in Orléans\, the Niigata Art Museum\, the Museum of Modern Art in Saitama\, The Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City\, and the Venice\, Beijing\, and Prague Biennales. His work has been featured in most major architectural publications as well Vogue\, Fast Company\, Wired\, USA Today\, The New York Times\, Surface\, Vice\, a twenty-five-page feature in A+U\, and on PBS\, Fox\, and MTV. \nGage’s work is the subject of two monographs Mark Foster Gage: Projects and Provocations (Rizzoli\, 2018)\, and Thought Through Form: The Work of Mark Foster Gage (Tongji\, 2020). He authored the book Designing Social Equality: Architecture Aesthetics and the Perception of Democracy (Routledge\, 2018)\, and he has edited three additional books: Aesthetics Equals Politics: New Discourses Across Art\, Architecture and Philosophy (MIT\, 2019)\, Aesthetic Theory: Essential Texts (Norton\, 2012)\, and Composites\, Surfaces and Software: High Performance Architecture\, with Greg Lynn (Yale\, 2009). Gage has also written extensively for academic journals and other publications including CNN\, JAE\, Volume\, Fulcrum\, A+U\, Perspecta\, AD\, Oz\, Plat\, Mole\, The Routledge Handbook of Architectural Design\, and Log\, where he was a guest editor of Issue #17. They met at Syracuse University where they each received a Bachelor of Architecture (1994). Michael Meredith received a Master of Architecture with Distinction from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University (2000). Hilary Sample received a Master of Architecture and the Suzanne Kolarik Thesis prize from Princeton University (2003). Currently\, Michael Meredith is a professor of architecture at Princeton University. His previous teaching positions include professorships at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (2004-2011)\, the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Architecture\, Landscape and Design (2001-2004) and a Muschenheim Teaching Fellowship at the University of Michigan (2000-01). Dubbeldam is widely known for her award-winning work\, recognized as much for its design excellence as for its use of smart building systems\, sustainable materials\, and innovative structures. Archi-Tectonics’ work is found in the USA\, Europe\, and Asia. Archi-Tectonics recently won the Asian Games 2022 Design Competition in Hangzhou China [2018]\, with a 16-acre park and 2 stadiums\, that is under construction to open in 2022. \nWinka Dubbeldam is also the Chair and Miller Professor of Architecture at the Weitzman School of Design and Director of the Advanced Research and Innovation [ARI] lab\, at the University of Pennsylvania\, where she has gathered an international network of innovative research and design professionals. She also previously taught at the graduate architecture programs at Columbia\, Cornell\, and Harvard University\, among other prestigious institutions. Currently Dubbeldam is the External Examiner of the Bartlett London and was named one of the DesignIntelligence 30 Most Admired Educators 2015. \nPublications include the three monographs Winka Dubbeldam\, Architect (010 Publishers\, Rotterdam\, 1996)\, AT-INdex (Princeton Press\, NYC\, 2006)\, and Archi-Tectonics (DAAB publishers\, 2010); a new book “Strange Objects” is planned for 2020 with Actar\, Spain. He is currently a Professor and Associate Dean at Princeton University School of Architecture\, where he has taught since 2000. He received a BA from Wesleyan University and a M.Arch from Princeton University. His New York based firm has completed academic\, cultural and institutional projects throughout the United States. LTL are the 2019 NY State AIA firm of the year. They have received a National Design Award\, have been inducted into the ID Hall of Fame\, and have received multiple AIA design awards. \nThe firm’s recent work includes Poster House\, a new museum dedicated to the poster in New York City; The Helen R. Walton Children’s Enrichment Center\, an early childhood center in Bentonville\, AR that sets a national model for children’s health; A new residence hall at Carnegie Mellon University; The ContemporAry Austin – Jones Center; Upson Hall at Cornell University and the Joseph D. Jamail Lecture Hall at Columbia University. \nThe firm’s designs and drawings been exhibited around the world\, including the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale\, and are part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, and Carnegie Museum of Art. LTL Architects are the authors of Intensities (2013)\, Opportunistic Architecture (2008) and Situation Normal….Pamphlet Architecture #21 (1998). Their newest book entitled Manual of Section\, an analysis of the history and typology of section in architecture\, is in its fourth printing. It has been translated into German\, Japanese\, Korean and Chinese. She is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the Cooper Union in New York. Prior to Cooper Union\, she was an Assistant Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, where she directed the MSArch program and Syracuse University; she also taught at Columbia University and Pratt Institute. \nKallipoliti is the author of the book The Architecture of Closed Worlds\, Or\, What is the Power of Shit (Lars Muller\, 2018)\, as well as the History of Ecological Design for Oxford English Encyclopedia of Environmental Science. Her work has been exhibited in a number of international venues including the Venice Biennial\, the Istanbul Design Biennial\, the Shenzhen Biennial\, the Oslo Trienalle\, the London Design Museum and the Storefront for Art and Architecture. Kallipoliti is the recipient of a Webby Award\, grants from the Graham Foundation\, and the New York State Council for the Arts\, an Honorable Mention at the Shenzhen Biennial\, a Fulbright scholarship\, and the ACSA annual award for Creative Achievement. Recently\, her practice ANAcycle was recognized as a Leading Innovator in Sustainable Design in BUILD’s 2019 and 2020 Design & Build Awards\, while her book was a finalist among all publications in design\, art and architecture in 2018 for the Cornish Family Prize by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. Their intimate knowledge of Boston\, where the sisters were born and raised\, allows the close practice to be both deeply engaged and work critically with local issues of housing\, public space\, history and identity. French 2D works on housing and mixed-use projects with a focus on strange housing types that combine familiar ideas of home with radical organizations and typologies\, found in their cohousing and micro-housing projects. The practice also works on civic installations and exhibitions that call upon the domestic to bring people together for familiar rituals in unfamiliar spaces\, found in serial dinner-parties\, fuzzy bartering environments\, and out-scaled dresses. \nJenny and Anda’s interest in hybrid models that exist between practice and academia has been the catalyst for their practice-based research and advocacy. Jenny is an Assistant Professor in Practice at the Harvard GSD and Anda serves on the Board of Directors for the Boston Society of Architects\, where the pair organized the recent Now Practice Now series\, exploring emerging modes of practice. \nFrench 2D was named as an Architectural Record Magazine Design Vanguard winner in 2019. He examines thought not as something “pure” and autonomous but as emerging from working with material\, and he identifies this as the source of imagination and creative insight. This takes place as much in such disciplines as cognitive science\, anthropology\, and poetry as it does in the more obvious painting\, sculpture\, and design. In some fields\, the medium of work is\, in fact\, the very medium of thinking—as fabric is for the tailor. \nDrawing on the philosophical notions of the “extended mind” and the “enactive mind\,” and looking beyond the world of material-based arts\, Bardt investigates the realms in which material and mind interweave through metaphor\, representation\, projection\, analogues\, tools\, and models. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR  \nChristopher Bardt has over 25 years of experience as an architect and professor of architecture at RISD. He is a founding principal of 3sixØ Architecture\, which Architectural Record named one of 10 leading vanguard firms worldwide in 2002. His extensive professional experience includes furniture design\, residential\, commercial and institutional commissions and planning studies\, ranging from small urban interventions to large-scale metropolitan development. Bardt has been a member of the Architecture faculty at RISD since 1988. He has been a visiting professor at Cornell University\, the National Academy of Design and Art\, Slovakia and the China Academy of Art and has served on the Board of Governors of the RISD Museum. In 2018\, a joint venture between Macerich and Hudson Pacific Properties announced plans to redevelop the declining Westside Pavilion into creative office space. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO AN UNDETERMINED FUTURE DATE. \nOn Saturday and Sunday\, March 14th and 15th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm\, please join us in hosting Textile Arts LA’s Carrie Burckle for a weekend-long screen printing workshop where you’ll explore chance and improvisation as playful strategies incorporating collage\, stamping\, cut outs\, and painting for designing prints. \nYou will discover relationships in line\, shape and color as your shapes and patterns unfold\, meander and snake back in on themselves\, creating new relationships and connections. You may explore mono prints\, cutout shapes\, appliqué ideas\, and more.  Sister Corita Kent says\,  “Consider/regard everything an experiment”. And “Nothing is a mistake”. \nThe weekend will be an immersion in play\, in freeing up blocked energy and exploring intuition and improvisational strategies.  Students will create stencils for mono printing and over printing onto any cloth scraps\, up cycled clothes\, misshapen cuts\, for use singularly or for extended quilts\, patchwork\, appliqué etc.  There are no preconceived outcomes\, only potential for further investigations. One exercise will include a print exchange\, where each student will receive a print from each of the other students\, creating an overprinted\, collage piece. \nFOR TICKETS \nWear comfortable clothing\, shoes\, and an apron. You will be standing on a concrete floor when printing. Comfortable shoes are a must. \n*We will take a lunch break: students are welcome to step outside for a quick walk to The Co-Op Market / Deli or one of the restaurants in the Helms Complex\, or bring your own lunch. \nThis class is intended for fine artists\, designers\, painters\, printmakers\, surface designers and general enthusiasts. Active since 1982\, Bruce Licher’s Independent Project Press is a contemporary studio that has bridged technological eras and produced an unparalleled body of work. It has culled from the past while simultaneously turning it on its head with a distinct visual vocabulary that continues to influence current aesthetics. \nFor the first time\, a comprehensive overview of Independent Project Records and Independent Project Press has been compiled into a monograph published by P22 Type Foundry\, produced in a quality that displays their  limited edition\, hand-made work in over 200 pages of full color\, from mechanical process work (for clients such as REM\, Stereolab\, and Camper Van Beethoven) to finished works of art with insights into the creative process along the way. The text includes an essay by Karen Nielsen Licher as well as material from Rudy Vanderlans’ Emigre magazine that featured the work of IPR & P. Co-designed by Bruce Licher and Jim Greishaber at P22\, Savage Impressions is a 12 x 12-inch hardcover book that displays in full color the diverse range of art and design produced by Independent Project Records & Press. \nThis first printing is an edition of one thousand copies\, with three-hundred and fifty of those being a now-sold out Deluxe Edition that includes a 12” vinyl record and other letterpress-printed ephemera. This book is a profound reminder of the value of the hand-made and how it can interface with the mass-produced. It will stand as major documentation of one of the most influential letterpress studios currently in existence.

Early in his career\, Jimenez Lai lived and worked in a desert shelter at Taliesin and resided in a shipping container at Atelier Van Lieshout on the piers of Rotterdam. Before founding Bureau Spectacular\, Lai worked for various international offices\, including MOS and OMA. Lai is widely exhibited and published around the world\, including the MoMA- collected White Elephant. His first book\, Citizens of No Place\, was published by Princeton Architectural Press with a grant from the Graham Foundation. Draft II of this book has been archived at the New Museum as a part of the show Younger Than Jesus. Lai has won various awards\, including the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Debut Award at the Lisbon Triennale\, and the 2017 Designer of the Future Award at Art Basel / Design Miami. In 2014\, Lai represented Taiwan at the 14th Venice Architectural Biennale. In 2015\, Lai organized the Treatise exhibition and publication series at the Graham Foundation. Discover why humans first twisted fibers into thread\, and how this invention revolutionized early cultures. Track the history of flax\, wool\, silk and cotton in the ancient world\, view textiles through Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs\, and explore how string and textiles are woven into language and identity. We’ll follow the presentation with a hands-on exercise where participants will ply their own string and make their own cloth – and in the process discover why using the fiber arts as a vehicle for self-discovery and innovation is so satisfying. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nCameron Taylor-Brown was introduced to textiles by artist Ed Rossbach at UC Berkeley\, studied design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (PCT&S) and worked as a fabric stylist in New York. She subsequently taught textile design and worked as an exhibition curator at PCT&S. Since 1985\, Taylor-Brown has lived in Los Angeles\, where she founded ARTSgarage\, a textile resource center. Her work is widely exhibited and is featured in publications including American Craft Magazine\, Fiber Art Now\, Handwoven and Shuttle\, Spindle and Dyepot. She teaches workshops at ARTSgarage\, schools\, guilds\, museums and conferences throughout the United States and Canada. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, January 29th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm\, please join us for Mindful and Meaningful: Exploring the Synergies Between Textile Waste and Fine Art Practice\, Textile Arts LA‘s inaugural session of practiceLAB\, featuring talks from artists\, architects\, designers\, and creatives. \nIn this session\, we are treated to a discussion of how artists and designers can work together to create a more sustainable future. Three Los Angeles based artists share their diverse practices and individual experiences\, creating responsible objects that honor the past and endure in the future. \nIf you attended the October Textile Slam you were treated to a sneak preview of this talk. We’re thrilled to invite the trio back for a longer form discussion of this critical topic: questions of sustainability\, reuse\, and upcycling are necessary considerations. Please join this lively presentation and discussion showcasing how three artists are responding. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \n \nRenae Barnard is a multi-disciplinary artist interested in exploring the network of interactions between environment\, perception\, and well-being. Using found materials and waste from the furniture manufacturing industry\, Barnard received her Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University and her BA from California State University\, Los Angeles. Barnard has recently completed projects in cooperation with the National Immigration Law Center and the City of Santa Monica Department of Cultural Affairs. She is a recipient of the Sue Arlen Walker and Harvey M. Parker Memorial Fellowship\, the Armory Center for the Arts Teaching Artist Fellowship\, The Ahmanson Annual Fellowship\, Lincoln Fellowship Award\, and Christopher Street West Art and Culture Grant. \n \nChuck Hohng is a Korean American artist\, born in Long Beach California. Chuck spent fourteen years of his early life in his family’s native South Korea. He received his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Art Center College of Design. His early childhood exposure to Catholic practice and a bicultural household furthered interests in vanitas\, identities\, symbols\, and rituals. Chuck makes a range of fiber artworks from teddy bears to haute couture hanbok. Exploring salvaged textiles connections to love and loss\, Chuck’s artworks give a physical body to intellectual and emotional experiences. He believes we can always grow out of the mud\, lift ourselves above the murky water and bloom. \n \nAneesa Shami received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in both Fiber and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute. Aneesa’s work speaks to a broader understanding that we are all fundamentally human. She tries to utilize universal themes that are inclusive\, referencing the sublime\, and an otherworldly sense of the human conscious and subconscious. A love for repetitive mark-making drives her practice. Multiple strands of yarn\, strips of felt\, and even pen strokes build depth and density in each piece. Layers of material and process combine to lend the impression that there is more than what the eye sees. She recently completed a residency at the Helms Design Center\, is currently researching textile and fiber history and is completing large sculptural pieces in her current body of work\, Syndication.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 25th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm\, please join Textile Arts LA for this all-day workshop\, Bookmaking: Art Material Storage with Sue Ann Robinson. Learn to make a beautiful and functional artist’s book\, using a “baggie book” structure to store samples of thread\, fiber\, dye\, swatches\, or anything you can dream up! \nThis six-hour workshop will teach a useful concertina spine fold technique and then how to attach archival bags to the spine\, and end the afternoon with covers. Examples will be provided to ensure that multiple sizes and uses for the Baggie Book can be adapted to your particular needs and will provide for reusable pages. Materials will be provided for one size book. All participants will leave with one Baggie Book ready to use. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nSue Ann Robinson is a maker of artist books and teaches Artist Books and Paper Making at California State University Long Beach. She is a member of the Guild of Book Workers and has exhibited her artist books nationally and internationally. Robinson is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships and residencies including the Library Fellows of the National Museum of Women in the Arts\, a CoLA Fellowship\, the Visual Studies Workshop and the Women’s Studio Workshop among others. Her artist books are included in the collections of the Getty Research Institute\, the Victoria and Albert Museum\, Yale University\, and many other public and private collections. \nPlease BYOLunch.
