SUMMARY:Urban Land Institute's Young Leaders Take Over The Helms Design Center
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 6th from 6:30 – 8:45\, Urban Land Institute’s Young Leader Group takes over the Helms Design Center for “Shark Tank”. \nNimble\, flexible\, responsive. The small-scale developer is inherently entrepreneurial\, but that doesn’t always translate to easy access to capital. Financing small-scale development deals can be challenging due to smaller deal size and a sponsor’s limited track record. How do different capital sources assess the same opportunity? What gets their attention? What makes or breaks the funding decision? Listen in as a project sponsor pitches an actual deal to a panel of capital sources. To register\, please click here. \nPanelists:\n\nAllan S. Glass – President\, ASG Real Estate\nDavid Cacciapaglia – Managing Director\, Guggenheim Partners\nJeff Trenton – President\, Proficiency Capital LLC\nRyan Granito – Vice President of Real Estate\, Fundrise\nHoward Kozloff – Managing Partner\, Agora Partners\, Moderator\n\nRegistration:\n\nPrivate $35 (Non-Member $50)\nPublic/Nonprofit $30 (Nonmember $45)\nUnder 35 $25 (Non-Member $40)\nStudent $20 (Non-Member $30)\n\nPlease note that registration prices increase $10 after the registration deadline of October 4th. \nParking:\nFree valet parking is available in the interior parking garage at 8711 Washington Boulevard\, adjacent to the Helms Design Center. The Design Center is located one block east of the Culver City metro station. \nAbout Urban Land Institute\nAt the Urban Land Institute\, our mission is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. SUMMARY:Woodbury Presents Calibrating Viscosity: Techniques for Negotiating Earthen Materials
DESCRIPTION:Free\nPlease join us October 5th from 6:30 to 8:30pm for a panel discussion with faculty members from the Woodbury University School of Architecture to discuss the potential of working with earthen materials in contemporary design practice. Berenika Boberska\, Donatella Cusma\, Anthony Fontenot\, and Matthew Gillis for short presentations and a discussion moderated by Joshua G. Stein. \nThis event is FREE and open to the public. Light bites and refreshments. Free valet parking at the corner of Helms Ave. and Venice Blvd. or take Metro Expo line to Culver City station\, one block west of the Helms Design Center. \nCalibrating Viscosity \nA sea change has occurred in design and planning based on a new intense mediation of our material context. As an ecological paradigm becomes increasingly embedded into the fundamentals of architecture practice and education\, so too has the technological capacity to negotiate these complexly physical systems. Cities are now mapped according to resource flows and management as much as abstract grids and idealized geometries while the discrete and (supposedly) static components of architectural construction are increasingly replaced with dynamic mixtures\, organic or mineral\, that often move during their production or over the life span of a building. In this new context\, the role of the architect tends more towards the complex orchestration of ingredients\, many of which are viscous and difficult to predict in their behaviors. \nThis panel discussion will examine earthen materials across various scales\, from ceramic building components to volatile environmental contexts\, with the intention of identifying techniques and concepts for negotiating rather than limiting their complexity. From the movement of ceramic materials during the firing process to the mapping of sediment flows\, how do we build with the vitality of the earth without confining its qualities to that of just another stock material\, easily quantified into specification charts? What are the necessary techniques for dealing with and influencing unstable matter\, either as context or as medium? Could these techniques define a new domain of knowledge that might encompass issues beyond material behavior alone? \nAbout the Panelists \nBerenika Boberska is the founder and principal of Feral Office\, based in Los Angeles\, an experimental practice engaged in architecture\, installation art and urban provocations. She also teaches architecture at Woodbury University\, in upper division design studios and topic studios (recently: The Rural Fantastic! and Solar Baroque ). Berenika graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture in London\, under professor Sir Peter Cook. She also received her Master of Fine Arts from the Royal College of Art in London. Prior to starting her own practice she worked as a Design Architect for 6 years at Frank Gehry’s office\, where she developed an attitude towards a more expressive\, sculptural way of working through analogue models in parallel with sophisticated computer modeling and constructability. \nDonatella Cusma is co-founder of Claret-Cup\, a multi-disciplinary collaborative project with Bojána Bányász combining architecture\, fashion\, and graphic design. The two\, along with multiple other projects\, have co-authored a series of site specific installations such as “Greeting from the Los Angeles River” and “I love L.A.” Ms Cusma’ is a board member of R.I.E.A (Research Institute for Experimental Architecture) founded by visionary artist and architect Lebbeus Woods. With R.I.E.A. Donatella participated as faculty in several International Architecture Workshops in Sweden\, Hong Kong\, Switzerland\, and Italy. She currently is teaching Design Studio\, in the Interior Architecture department of Woodbury University.  In 2013 Cusma and Banyasz launched Map-a-Porter a project that links their passion for mapping the city and object making. The result is an ever-expanding series of active functional objects designed to spark conversations about cities. Ms Cusma is an AIA international associate since 2008 and a member of the Italian Board of Architects-Messina Chapter since 2004. \nAnthony Fontenot is a Professor at Woodbury University School of Architecture. He was awarded a Getty Fellowship for 2010-2011 and the Fellowship of the Society of Woodrow Wilson Scholars at Princeton University in 2009 and 2010. He is the author of numerous publications including New Orleans Under Reconstruction: The Crisis of Planning (Verso\, 2014)\, “Gregory Ain and Cooperative Housing in a Time of Major Crisis” in Making A Case (Princeton Architectural Press\, 2012) and the forthcoming books Non-Design and the Non-Planned City (Chicago University Press\, 2017) and Gregory Ain: Low-Cost Modern Housing and the Construction of a Social Landscape (UR Books\, 2017). He was a co-curator of the 2011 Gwangju Design Biennial in South Korea and the exhibition “Clip/Stamp/Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X – 197X” (2007). He holds a professional Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Louisiana\, a Master of Architecture degree from Southern California Institute of Architecture\, and a Ph.D. in the history and theory of architecture at Princeton University. \nMatthew Gillis is the principal of the research and design practice G!LL!S. Gillis holds a Master of Architecture degree from the UCLA and Bachelor of Design in Architecture degree from the University of Florida. After working in the offices of Coop Himmel(b)lau in Guadalajara and Griffin Enright Architects in Los Angeles\, before starting his own practice. In addition to design projects\, Matthew is committed to research and publication; he currently sits on the editorial board for the Los Angeles Forum for Architectural and Urban Design. He taught at SCI-Arc\, OTIS College of Design and currently is an assistant professor at Woodbury University. \nJoshua G. Stein is the founder of Radical Craft and the co-director of the Data Clay Network\, a forum for the exploration of digital techniques applied to ceramic materials. Radical Craft is a Los Angeles-based studio that advances design saturated in history (from archaeology to craft) that inflects the production of contemporary urban spaces and artifacts\, evolving newly grounded approaches to the challenges posed by virtuality\, velocity\, and globalization. Recent projects engage earthen materials that resist easy manipulation\, whether in raw or consolidated states. He has taught at the California College of the Arts\, Cornell University\, SCI-Arc\, and the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. He was a 2010-11 Rome Prize Fellow in Architecture\, and is currently Professor of Architecture at Woodbury University.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts A Book Signing With Randi Malkin Steinberger
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 1st from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing of No Circus by photographer Randi Malkin Steinberger.\nNo Circus is a collection of photographer Randi Malkin Steinberger’s vibrant color images of buildings in and around Los Angeles that have been tented for termite fumigation. After moving to the city in the early nineties\, she first encountered these brightly shrouded structures and began to stop and photograph them. Knowing that they might be undraped at any given moment\, Steinberger was intrigued by the way the colors and shapes of the tents revealed the buildings inside and highlighted the beauty of the poor plants on the outside\, still flourishing\, unaware that they were slowly being poisoned. Beyond their intended purpose of fumigation\, these tents also unwittingly beckon us to stop and contemplate architectural form\, the meaning of home\, and the lure of the Southern California lifestyle. No Circus features a text by noted essayist D.J. Waldie\, and is the culmination of a two decade pursuit of these temporary architectural enigmas.\nJoining Arcana along with Ms. Steinberger and Mr. Waldie will be the book’s designer – and Deadbeat Club head honcho – Clint Woodside along with a special musical performance by composer Gavin Gamboa. Evoking the language of insects – both real and imagined – as well as the sounds of quarantine\, Mr. Gamboa of The Teaching Machine collective will provide a backdrop of chirping\, clicking\, whirling\, buzzing oscillations to the event!

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts An L.A.-
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 13th from 5 to 7PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for an L.A.-centric conversation between Paul Ruscha and photographer Lloyd Ziff to celebrate the publication of the lovely New York / Los Angeles\, Photographs: 1967-2015. The discussion will be followed by a book signing. \nNew York / Los Angeles\, Photographs: 1967-2015 is a remarkable collection of compelling images of life in two of America’s most exciting cities\, as seen through the eye of photographer Lloyd Ziff. This lovely two volume set – newly published by KMWstudio – encompasses more than forty years of black and white and color photography. As both cities change before Ziff’s inquiring lens\, his unique vision emerges\, amused and ironic\, finding beauty and surprise in daily urban life. \nSince 2000\, Ziff has made photography the focus of his career. He has had one man shows at New York’s Danziger Gallery and Earl McGrath Gallery in Los Angeles. His photographs have been included in Patti Smith’s autobiography\, Just Kids\, and The Spirit of Family by Al and Tipper Gore as well as in Blind Spot\, Interview\, Kid’s Wear (Germany)\, New York\, Rolling Stone\, and The New York Times Magazine. Ziff’s work is included in the permanent collections of The Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, The Palm Springs Art Museum\, and The International Center of Photography. In 1999\, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, New York\, his alma mater. \nPaul Ruscha is a photographer\, calligrapher\, and sometimes a writer. His book\, Full Moon\, published by Steidl\, is an eclectic overview of his personal art collection and of the artists he collects. In 1973\, after thirty years as a native of Oklahoma City\, he moved to Los Angeles to work for his brother\, Edward\, where he presently documents all of his studio’s artistic production. He met Lloyd Ziff in L.A. in 1973 and they have been close friends ever since.

Presented as a trio of elegant\, sixty-four page publications\, each is a compelling visual survey of contemporary photography from Los Angeles\, Chicago\, and New York – the three largest cities in the United States. While it is a challenging task to curate work from cities with such dense histories of art and culture\, the contributors to the Los Angeles installment – Anthony Lepore\, Jonnie Chambers\, Justin Fiset\, Sean Lemoine\, Shawn Bush\, Sinziana Velicescu\, and Tim Bradley all depict our local environment in a revealing and engaging fashion. \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Pamela Littky
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, September 15th from 6 to 8PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in welcoming Pamela Littky for a book signing of The Villa Bonita. \nLike many apartment buildings in Hollywood\, the Villa Bonita was built during the film industry’s first heyday bridging the 1920s to the 1930s. Built for the vast crews and casts that Cecil B. DeMille was hiring during the period\, the Villa Bonita has housed great Hollywood figures from Errol Flynn to Francis Ford Coppola. \nIn the absence of traditionally scaled\, walkable neighborhoods\, Los Angeles has long created community within the confines of these kinds of apartment complexes. Young and old\, employed and between gigs\, dreamers and those whose dreams left long ago – everyone arrived at the Villa Bonita for one good reason or another. Featuring a foreword by Cameron Crowe\, this striking hardbound volume brings us within intimate distance of its subjects\, as Los Angeles-based photographer – and Arcana favorite – Pamela Littky surveys all of the inhabitants of this historic apartment tower in the middle of Hollywood\, creating a collective portrait of the transient nature of the city.

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 28th from 5 to 7PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts along with Éditions for a book launch and signing for Courts 02 by Ward Roberts. Following the release of Courts in 2012\, New York-based photographer Ward Roberts releases the second volume of his comprehensive body of work documenting sporting courts in Hong Kong\, Bermuda\, Hawaii\, New York\, and Melbourne. \nPublisher Éditions has produced two separate releases of the book – a standard edition plus a collector’s edition limited to one hundred examples – and for the very first time a selection of three 23 x 23″ color prints that will be on display and available for sale at the event. \n“As all iconic images inevitably do\, Ward Roberts’ Courts have now become a force of their own\, circulating the world with terrific velocity via the rushing slipstream of the Internet\, gathering momentum and making their mark upon the global eye. His work has brought together a growing community of followers\, with whom he feels a humble sense of connection. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 10th from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts\, Klowden Mann\, and LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) to celebrate the release of Bettina Hubby’s Thanks for the Mammaries. This artist’s book documents the various iterations of Hubby’s ongoing project Thanks for the Mammaries\, the Facebook feed which was originally installed at the LAND HQ from October through November of 2015. \nIn 2014\, Hubby announced her Breast Cancer diagnosis on Facebook and asked her friends and community to submit “boob-related imagery.” People showered Hubby with images\, videos\, and verbiage that helped her heal\, and inspired her to pay it forward. Touched by the uplifting effect of this communal support\, Hubby sent out a call to artists to submit works for an exhibition. The exhibitions and online Facebook feed displayed the outpouring of support that resulted from Hubby’s call to action; selections of which are documented in the publication. “What continues to bring me the most satisfaction is the feedback regarding my approach\, in that it has been positively impacting and inspiring people who have (and even many who have not) faced illness in their lives\, or in their loved ones’ lives. This is why I wanted to release this as a book to a wider audience. This book is dedicated to the medicinal power of boobishness”. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\n310.458.1499 \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing + Conversation With Johnston Marklee
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 9th from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in welcoming their very own architects\, Johnston Marklee partners Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee\, for a conversation and book signing inside the gorgeous Arcana showroom they created.  The afternoon will address the architectural firm’s design process and engagement with contemporary art practices in conversation with artist Veronika Kellndorfer\, one of the collaborators on their new monograph\, HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE. \nThe talk will be followed by a book signing. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\n310.458.1499 \nAbout Johnston Marklee\nFounded by partners Sharon Johnston\, F.A.I.A. and Mark Lee in 1998\, Johnston Marklee is internationally recognized for its diverse portfolio of architecture\, engaging the physical and cultural circumstances of each project through a precise synthesis of structural form\, materiality\, and atmospheric light. The work of the firm pays tribute to a specific Southern Californian interpretation of modernism\, and at the same time operates at the intersection of a global and local dialogue. Since founding Johnston Marklee\, Johnston and Lee have forged a leading role in the cultural discourse around contemporary art and architecture\, eliciting design collaborations with distinguished museums\, foundations\, and artists around the world. Complementing this far-reaching network\, the firm’s work is recognized for being deeply rooted in the history and foundations of the discipline. \nAbout Veronika Kellndorfer\nOriginally through painting and more recently through photography\, Veronika Kellndorfer has been concerned with the physical and social construction of space. In her recent body of work\, Kellndorfer photographed classic modernist architectural landmarks in Los Angeles including the only house built by Oscar Niemeyer in the United States\, Rudolph Schindler’s Lovell Beach House\, John Lautner’s Silvertop home in Silver Lake\, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Freeman House\, among others. Yet\, rather than capturing the iconic wide-angle views of these famously photographed homes\, Kellndorfer focuses on the intimate details of windows and reflections and how they reveal the ephemeral nature of seeing\, as well as the subjectivity of space. This ambiguity of space is heightened by the artist’s use of highly reflective glass panels that are often life-sized\, and when displayed in a public setting\, museum or gallery\, invites the viewer to experience his or her own subjective surroundings. \nHer exhibition Tropical Modernism: Lina Bo Bardi will be on view at Christopher Grimes Gallery from July 8th through September 2nd\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Double Book Signing: Deanna Templeton and Clint Woodside
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 18th from 5 to 7pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a double book signing for these two amazing releases\, Deanna Templeton’s The Swimming Pool and Clint Woodside’s Undercover Cars. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\n310.458.1499 \nDeanna Templeton’s The Swimming Pool is a newly published photographic essay from this Southern California-based artist. Departing from her well-known street portraiture\, this collection offers a deep and inspiring view of the human form underwater. The series was born after an impromptu nude swimming pool shoot of her husband – the artist Ed Templeton – which spurred an eight-year journey in the study of light\, expression\, and the enigma of water. Shooting entirely on color\, black-and-white\, and Polaroid film\, Templeton sends her friends into the pool to be photographed in their truest form. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nClint Woodside’s Undercover Cars was first issued in 2013 as a Deadbeat Club zine and has been newly re-conceived and substantially enlarged as an elegant hardcover book. Containing fifty-two images of cars parked in plain sight\, but covered from the elements\, it is the culmination of a series of color photographs – shot on film and printed in the dark room – spanning five years\, scores of autos\, and thousands of miles from Los Angeles to Banghok.
