When you purchase an artwork by the featured artist – this month is Hung Viet Nguyen  – a 50% donation will be made on your behalf to continue the critical and life-saving services LAFH provides. Hung’s art may be found inside the Room & Board showroom through the month of April. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \n \nHung Viet Nguyen paints Landscape series as a visual expression of the senses rather than literal representation of specific landmarks or locations. Inspired by his many travels and the experience of place\, it is memory\, along with the emotion and spirit of each space that he translates into a semi-abstract expression of what it felt like to be there. Expressed through a complex layering of paints\, Nguyen starts with thick bases of oil under-painting\, then organizes space into landmass\, mountains\, sky\, and water boundaries. Using color and objects to create depth\, the ultimate sensation is a feeling of infinite space. \nNature is a sacred place; he always paints nature respectfully. \nBorn in Vietnam in 1957\, Hung Viet Nguyen studied biology at the Science University in Saigon. After relocating to the U.S. in 1982\, Nguyen found work as an illustrator\, graphic artist and designer. He developed his artistic skills carefully studying a variety of traditional Eastern and Western forms\, media and techniques. His complex\, labor intensive use of oil paint reveals a mastery of texture. While portions of Nguyen’s work suggest the influence of traditional forms such as woodblock prints\, oriental scroll paintings\, ceramic art\, mosaic\, and stained glass\, his ultimate expression as an artist asserts a more contemporary sensibility.

Madrid\, 1973) is an Associate Professor of Architecture and a founding faculty member of the Architecture Program at the University of San Diego. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University\, a Masters of Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University with honors\, and an AA Diploma from the Architectural Association. \nLópez-Pérez’s scholarship focuses on the historiography of modern architecture and its relationship to questions of technology\, design-research\, models of design pedagogy\, material and environmental culture. The firm’s work spans residential\, commercial and creative offices\, public spaces\, K-12 and higher education\, athletics and recreation\, and science / innovation centers. JFAK recently commenced work on two public middle/high school projects focused on providing equal access to cutting-edge education – the Iovine and Young Center in Leimert Park\, and the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Academy Middle and High Schools in South Gate. \nIn 2020 with like-minded collaborators\, John and Alice founded Open Source Homelessness Initiative (OSHI)\, a nonprofit that mines open data to accelerate innovations to eradicate homelessness. OSHI was recently named a winner of Metropolis’s Responsible Disruptors awards program. \nJFAK’s first book will be published by Actar. It will highlight a range of the firm’s projects along with the inspirations and passions that shaped them. John and Alice were named Emerging Voices by The Architectural League of New York and are elected Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Through Place It!\, he has developed an interdisciplinary\, community-healing\, visioning\, and outreach process that uses storytelling\, objects\, art-production\, and play to help improve the urban-planning outreach process. He is now an international expert in public engagement and has traveled around the US\, Mexico\, Canada\, Europe\, and South America\, facilitating over 500 workshops\, and building over 100 interactive models. His research has appeared in The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Dwell\, Places\, and in numerous books. Relevant areas of expertise include using model-building as a means of community and planning outreach; working with underserved\, disadvantaged communities and bringing overlooked voices to the planning discussion; making the physical form of cities relevant to broad audiences; and understanding how immigrants—especially Latino immigrants—see and understand urban and suburban space in the US and why they often times reshape those forms in the ways that they do. \nJohn Kamp runs the landscape\, design\, and engagement practice Prairieform. He has developed innovative tools to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in urban and landscape design\, transportation\, walkability\, climate change\, and water conservation. DESCRIPTION:Helms Design Center\n8745 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\nExhibition runs April 22 – June 18\, 2022\nViewing hours: Friday-Sunday\, 12 PM – 5 PM \nJames Hubbell is a painter\, sculptor and architectural designer who has spent 60 years designing and making buildings\, artifacts and fine artworks that reflect a deep passion for the ocean and for earth’s gifts. From Ilan Lael\, his self-made home\, workshops and foundation in Julian near San Diego\, Hubbell has created schools in concert with the community in Tijuana\, an organic chapel at Sea Ranch\, and parks that span the cultures of the Pacific Rim. \nHubbell’s vision is the antithesis of rational and industrial. “Most important is my infatuation with nature\,” he says. “There is also my love of the primitive and naive\, gothic architecture\, the arts and craft movement\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Gaudi\, and the pleasure of working with the material of stone\, wood\, cement\, clay\, metal\, glass\, and mosaics.” \nNow Angelenos can see his architectural work shown for the first time in L.A. at an exhibition opening on Earth Day at Helms Bakery District in Culver City. Multiple archives have been synthesized exploring the innovation of Russel and Mary Wright’s  design practice\, their home and the extensive 77 acres of Woodland Paths at Dragon Rock\, Manitoga. \nRussel and Mary Wright: Dragon Rock at Manitoga is an immersive experience evoking the individuality of these artists\, the spirit of  architecture and design in the mid 20th century and their ethos which continues to flourish. \n\nAbout Jennifer \nJennifer Golub is the author of Russel and Mary Wright: Dragon Rock at Manitoga.  Her previous publication was Albert Frey Houses 1+2\, also published by Princeton Architectural Press. She has produced award winning branded content for the likes of Apple\, Adidas\, Levi’s\, RayBan\, and directed and produced Apple’s Emmy award winning “Think Different”. She is the founder of A-Frame Content\, generating communications at the intersection of art and social impact. She has served on boards and developed content for various foundations including the XQ Institute\, Conservation International\, Virgin Unite\, (RED)\, Rock the Vote\, Feeding America and Phillip Johnson’s Glass House. She has produced films for Ed Ruscha and Frank Gehry\, curated art exhibitions\, and has commissioned multiple architectural projects. She resides in Los Angeles\, West Marin and New York City. \nAbout Eames \nEames Demetrios is best known in the design world as director of the Eames Office and for authoring several design books — including An Eames Primer and Essential Eames. He has authored 11 books altogether and contributed to many others. He is also Chairman of the Board of the Eames Foundation\, responsible for taking care of the Eames House. His current large-scale project is his parallel universe\, Kcymaerxthaere\, a global artwork of multi-dimensional storytelling.  For this Eames has so far installed 143 markers and historic sites involving 27 linear languages\, in 30 countries on 6 continents. (There is a ready-to-go design for the Moon.) Demetrios has also made over 60 films (mostly shorts) on topics from the Modern Maya to Frank Gehry\, from homelessness to legendary winemaker Peter Gago. Genres include fiction\, documentary and animation. Demetrios has given talks in 50 countries\, including on the mainstage of the legendary TED conference. Eames Demetrios lives with his family in Los Angeles\, California. \n

We work out of a renovated warehouse at the nexus of the Arts District\, Little Tokyo and Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. First founded by Peter Tolkin in 2000\, our studio has designed and built projects of various types and scales\, including creative workspaces\, single and multi-family housing\, mixed-use and retail\, restaurants and hotels\, and arts-based projects. TOLO’s designs draw from the rich material and cultural conditions that characterize the world we live in. Rather than conceiving our architectural role as primarily inventors of form\, we also see our role as one that interprets and shapes relationships and situations. \nPeter Tolkin\, AIA is managing principal of TOLO Architecture. Peter founded the practice\, previously called Peter Tolkin Architecture\, in 2002 and since then has led the design of dozens of residential\, commercial\, cultural and arts-related projects. At TOLO\, Peter advocates for the social and cultural agency of architecture\, an approach informed by his prior work as a documentary photographer and his studies with American artists Allan Sekula and Lewis Baltz. Peter first rose to prominence in 2002 when Architectural Record named him one of its ten emerging international “Design Vanguard” architects. Peter received a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History from UC Santa Cruz\, a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)\, and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University. \nSarah Lorenzen\, AIA is principal at TOLO Architecture and an architecture professor at Cal Poly Pomona (where she was department chair from 2012-2016). Sarah has practiced architecture for more than 20 years\, working on a variety of building types including educational\, residential\, institutional\, and arts-related projects. Prior to TOLO Architecture\, Sarah worked as a project architect at a number of award-winning firms in Atlanta\, San Francisco and Los Angeles. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Drawing at Smith College and at the Atlanta College of Art\, and has two Master of Architecture degrees\, the first from Georgia Institute of Technology and the second from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc). From Ilan Lael\, his self-made home\, workshops and foundation in Julian near San Diego\, Hubbell has created schools in concert with the community in Tijuana\, an organic chapel at Sea Ranch\, and parks that span the cultures of the Pacific Rim. \nHubbell’s vision is the antithesis of rational and industrial. “Most important is my infatuation with nature\,” he says. “There is also my love of the primitive and naive\, gothic architecture\, the arts and craft movement\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Gaudi\, and the pleasure of working with the material of stone\, wood\, cement\, clay\, metal\, glass\, and mosaics.” \nNow Angelenos can see his architectural work shown for the first time in L.A. at an exhibition opening on Earth Day at Helms Bakery District in Culver City. Together\, they lead Los Angeles-based and award-winning architectural practice P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S\, which they founded in 2002 as a speculative platform to explore an increasingly global design culture. Their work reveals a rigorous and progressive approach to projects and buildings across materials\, scales\, agendas and geographies\, insisting on the cultural and social relevance of architectural form\, contemporary aesthetics and emerging technologies. Their books include PATTERNS: Embedded\, the studio first monograph published in 2010 by Shanghai based ACDCU and Mute Icons & Other Dichotomies of the Real in Architecture recently released by ACTAR Press. Marcelo Spina is a Design Faculty at SCI-Arc and Georgina Huljich is an Associate Professor at UCLA AUD. \nP-A-T-T-E-R-N-S is a leading architectural practice led by partners Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich. The studio brings a critical and progressive approach to projects across scales\, programs\, and geographies\, insisting on the cultural and social relevance of architectural form\, contemporary aesthetics\, and emerging technologies. The practice is dedicated to building commissions\, exploratory mediations\, and published arguments where the reality of the contemporary environment is engaged as a provocation for experiments in form\, material\, and imagery. Both principals teach and view pedagogy as crucial to the continual development of architectural ideas. Young & Ayata have received the Progressive Architecture award\, the Design Vanguard Award\, the Young Architects Prize\, the AIA Honor Award\, and a first-place prize for the design of the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau\, Germany. \nMichael Young is an Assistant Professor at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union. He is the recipient of the 2019-20 Rome Prize from the American Academy of Rome. He is the author of The Estranged Object (Graham Foundation 2015) and Reality Modeled After Images (Routledge 2021). Michael received his Masters of Architecture from Princeton University and his Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Michael is a Registered Architect in the State of New York. \nKutan Ayata is an Associate Professor and the Vice Chair in the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at UCLA\, where he also serves as the Director of Master of Architecture Program. He received his Masters of Architecture from Princeton University and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art. Committed to pursuing architecture as a form of applied design research\, and guided by the belief that each project regardless of scope or scale can achieve a unique design synthesis\, the firm has gained widespread recognition for innovation in design. IwamotoScott’s client list includes arts organizations\, educational institutions\, technology companies\, commercial developers\, and private clients. Our projects consist of work at all scales including urban design\, buildings\, interiors\, digital fabrication projects\, museum installations and exhibitions\, and theoretical proposals. \nHonors received by IwamotoScott include: the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award\, induction into the Interior Design Hall of Fame\, ACADIA’s Digital Practice Award of Excellence\, Architectural Record’s Women in Architecture and Design Vanguard Awards\, The Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices and League Prize awards\, and over seventy five individual project design awards including a Progressive Architecture Award and over twenty AIA Design Awards at local\, state and national levels. The work of Iwamoto and Scott has been widely exhibited and published nationally and internationally. The founding partners have lectured on the work of IwamotoScott at a wide range of institutions and venues worldwide. \nBoth partners continuously maintained academic careers alongside their professional practice – Lisa Iwamoto is Chair and Professor of Architecture at the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley\, and Craig Scott is Professor of Architecture at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. Iwamoto and Scott have taught previously at University of Michigan\, and as visiting faculty at Harvard University\, Cornell University\, Syracuse University\, SCIArc\, Yale University and Sydney University. DESCRIPTION:Congratulations! \nHelms Bakery District Presents An Evening with AIA Gold Medal Winners Angela Brooks\, FAIA\, and Lawrence Scarpa\, FAIA\nThursday\, June 9th | 6:30 PM\nReception and Celebration of Brooks + Scarpa \nPrivate Invitation Only | RSVP Required\n8723 Washington Boulevard | Culver City \nAfter meeting at architecture school at the University of Florida\, Lawrence Scarpa\, raised in a family run restaurant\, and Angela Brooks resolved to not work together. That changed and now Brooks + Scarpa has won the AIA Gold Medal for a partnership dedicated to creating buildings that advance the art and technology of architecture. Through citizen activism they have also disrupted codes\, construction and the financing of buildings\, demonstrating the breadth of ways an architect can shape space and place. \n“Their efforts have fundamentally reshaped public policy initiatives that address critical issues and reforms that serve the public good\, increase housing equity\, and improve the built environment\,” wrote Steve Dumez\, FAIA\, and Douglas A. Benson\, FAIA\, in a letter nominating Brooks and Scarpa for the Gold Medal. \nBrooks + Scarpa has built on the foundations laid by Pugh + Scarpa\, founded in 1991 by Gwynne Pugh and Larry Scarpa. The firm has designed single and multi-family dwellings\, commercial\, institutional\, educational and governmental buildings. Most recently they won the commission to design a new Holocaust Memorial to be placed at the Florida State Capitol Building in Tallahassee. In Los Angeles they have made a deep imprint with affordable housing\, designing formally powerful buildings that also nurture social connection in contemporary variants on the Southland’s courtyard housing. “Form is important but it is experience that matters\,” say the duo\, adding that their body of work is united not by a signature look but rather an approach. “It is a sequence of spaces and not a form. We design from the inside-out.” \nBrooks and Scarpa also relish experimentation with texture and materials\, and have incorporated ping-pong balls\, crushed aluminum cans\, Dixie cups\, industrial brooms and glitter stucco into structures. “Architecture is most powerful when it is tactile. Many times people want to actually touch our buildings—walk up and feel the walls\,” says Scarpa. That material exploration met innovative sustainable design when they sheathed a wall at the Colorado Court affordable housing project\, for Community Corporation of Santa Monica\, with solar panels\, making the energy system into a decorative facade. From Ilan Lael\, his self-made home\, workshops and foundation in Julian near San Diego\, Hubbell has created schools in concert with the community in Tijuana\, an organic chapel at Sea Ranch\, and parks that span the cultures of the Pacific Rim. \nHubbell’s vision is the antithesis of rational and industrial. “Most important is my infatuation with nature\,” he says. “There is also my love of the primitive and naive\, gothic architecture\, the arts and craft movement\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Gaudi\, and the pleasure of working with the material of stone\, wood\, cement\, clay\, metal\, glass\, and mosaics.” \nNow Angelenos can see his architectural work shown for the first time in L.A. at an exhibition opening on Earth Day at Helms Bakery District in Culver City. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 11th from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm\, please join L.A. GOAL in celebrating their show\, Mother Nature Survived It (and I Will Too). As part of L.A. GOAL’s mission to foster a more inclusive society\, there will also be artworks created by artists from the broader Los Angeles County community. A show by artists of all abilities! \nL.A. GOAL is a non-profit organization that partners with adults with developmental disabilities and their support networks to assist them in living more fulfilling lives. Many of the artworks featured in this exhibition were created by artists with developmental disabilities. These artists are employed by L.A. GOAL’s professional art studio\, Inside Out Productions. \nThis art exhibition aims to highlight the ways in which pandemic circumstances affect our relationship with nature and how that relationship affects our experience of healing\, strength\, and community. During this global pandemic\, many people were traveling less\, spending more time at home\, and moving their gatherings to the outdoors. Since then\, our relationship to nature has likely changed. Whether we are hiking or camping\, taking a walk in the park\, tending to a houseplant\, or rendering images of landscapes\, nature finds its way into our lives one way or another. It may find itself in our homes and our neighborhoods in small and perhaps overlooked ways. \nTo learn more about L.A. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 11 from 2:00 to 3:30 as we welcome architect and ikebana teacher Ravi GuneWardena of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana\, Los Angeles who will talk about the history of the Sogetsu School in Tokyo and its collaborations with artists. The conversation will be followed by a demo of three arrangements (from a simple basic arrangement to an advanced freestyle arrangement) and a discussion with Frances Anderton on the relevance of the art form today. \nThe audience will also have an opportunity to view the completion of the large ikebana work made of unconventional materials (recycled construction scraps) with the addition of fresh plant material. \nRSVP and TICKETS HERE\nIf you plan to pop into the L.A.
