Imaginative and ambitious\, the projects reveal the incredible diversity of ideas that have emerged from the world’s most influential architects—and many you’ve never heard of. Spanning nearly 80 countries\, the book presents concepts for projects of all types: museums\, art galleries\, cemeteries\, churches\, bridges\, skyscrapers\, hotels\, theme parks\, casinos\, opera houses\, government buildings\, and even a floating theatre boat that resembles a UFO. Seen together\, the projects conjure a strange and wonderful new world while simultaneously offering insight into how architectural projects have been conceived and developed (and dashed) over the last 100 years. The book also includes previously unpublished prints\, paintings\, drawings\, etchings\, preparatory sketches\, and images that bring these alternate histories to life. \nSam Lubell is Editor at Large at Metropolis. He has written more than ten books about architecture for Phaidon\, Rizzoli\, The Monacelli Press\, Metropolis Books\, and Oro Editions. He writes for The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, Fast Company\, Architectural Digest\, Wallpaper\, Dwell\, Architect Magazine\, and other publications. He has co-curated four major architecture exhibitions and taught as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University School of Architecture\, Columbia University GSAPP\, and Arizona State University The Design School. \nFor more than a decade\, Greg Goldin was Architecture Critic at Los Angeles Magazine. He has written a half dozen books about architecture for Phaidon\, Rizzoli\, and Metropolis Books. His work has appeared in the New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Metropolis\, and the Architect’s Newspaper. He co-curated the museum exhibitions Never Built Los Angeles and Never Built New York\, and has taught as an adjunct professor at USC\, UCLA\, Syracuse University School of Architecture\, and Columbia University GSAPP. He resides in Los Angeles where he continues a family tradition of being a thorn in the side of the rich and powerful. \nFrances Anderton covers Los Angeles design and architecture in print\, broadcast media and public events. She is the author of Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles\, which won the 2022 Gold award for best Regional Nonfiction from Foreword Reviews. She is co-author of Awesome and Affordable: Great Housing Now\, a multimedia project produced in 2024 by Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles (FORT: LA). She has co-produced short films for the nonprofit housing developers Community Corporation of Santa Monica and Venice Community Housing. Anderton writes a regular newsletter about design and architecture for KCRW public radio station. For many years she hosted the KCRW show DnA: Design and Architecture\, and produced the current affairs shows Which Way\, LA? and To The Point. She teaches an urban housing seminar at USC architecture. Honors include the Esther McCoy Award\, from the Architectural Guild of USC architecture school\, for her work educating the public about architecture and urbanism. \nPreorder The Atlas of Never Built Architecture here \n\nIntroduced by Stephen Phillips\, FAIA\, PhD\, Principal of Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) and professor\, director\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo). \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nSPONSORED BY

SUMMARY:Join Westside Urban Forum for Light Bites + Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Adaptive Reuse: Can It Save Post-Pandemic Los Angeles?\n7:45 am – 9:30 am\n7:45 am – Registration & Light Breakfast\n8:15 am – Panel Discussion \nMEMBERS REGISTER HERE\nGUESTS REGISTER HERE\nFour years after the onset of the pandemic and the resulting work-from-home trend\, the office market in Los Angeles continues to experience significant challenges with increased vacancy\, sluggish leasing\, and financially burdened ownership. This market disruption has hollowed out many commercial centers that were traditionally reliant on office workers\, resulting in decreased foot traffic and the shuttering of restaurant and retail establishments. Many policy experts have suggested that the rejuvenation of commercial centers requires the reinvention of office centers into mixed-use districts with round-the-clock activation. \nIn order to achieve this\, it has been suggested that lightly used office buildings could be converted into residential space\, providing a much-needed boost in activity. In response\, the City of Los Angeles has released a proposed Adaptive Reuse Ordinance that is intended to encourage these conversions. A similar measure was adopted in Downtown Los Angeles and helped to usher in the boom of residential development that occurred in the neighborhood in the ensuing two decades. However\, few office-to-residential conversions have been successfully executed in recent years\, and experts in the field have commented that there are significant financial\, engineering\, and policy challenges that stand in the way of a meaningful wave of residential conversions. \nDoes the City’s proposed ordinance do enough to overcome these challenges? SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Jim Ganzer: Life Lived
DESCRIPTION:Free \nJoin Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, April 27th\, between 4:00 and 6:00 PM for a book signing with OG coastal cultural icon Jim Ganzer to celebrate the publication of his brand new\, limited edition photographic memoir from the creative folks at Indoek: Life Lived. \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at Arcana\, please place your order here. \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n“Jim Ganzer is widely known as a Malibu surf legend and an underground L.A. icon. He and his group of surf friends inspired the 1978 film\, Big Wednesday\, written and directed by John Milius. When the Coen brothers were developing The Big Lebowski\, Milius introduced them to Ganzer\, who influenced Jeff Bridges’ famous character\, The Dude. A graduate of Chouinard Art Institute\, Jim Ganzer emerged as an artist when the surf and skate culture-inspired world was not yet a billion-dollar industry\, but an afterthought in a mostly hardware-focused segment. He became the voice of the subculture in the ’80s for inventing innovative garments combining form with function for his surf and skatewear brand\, Jimmy’Z. Ganzer collaborated with Ed Ruscha on several works\, such as ‘Brave Men Run in My Family’ and ‘Sea of Desire’ and also starred in Ruscha’s film\, Miracle. He has shown his art in many esteemed group and solo exhibits in California and all over the world since 1971.” \nImages courtesy of Indoek

SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Tim Street-Porter and Annie Kelly for City of Dreams: Los Angeles Interiors
DESCRIPTION:Free \n\nJoin Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, April 20th\, between 4:00 and 6:00 PM for a book signing with Annie Kelly and Tim Street-Porter to celebrate the publication of their latest sumptuous architecture and design survey\, City of Dreams: Los Angeles Interiors. \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at Arcana\, please place your order here! \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n“Los Angeles’ Tim Street-Porter has been chronicling this metropolis’ architecture and interiors for over twenty-five years. This stunning collection of inspiring homes begins with a look back\, which includes examples of iconic houses inspired by Hollywood film fantasies\, Modernist residences by such luminaries as John Lautner\, and Frank Gehry’s Deconstructivism-style home. The heart of the book features today’s forward-looking homes\, divided into two sections: Living with Art and Design and Los Angeles Modern. Antiquarian Joel Chen artfully blends an eye-catching collection of period furniture and Chinese objets while interior designer Jean-Louis Denoit’s house sparkles with a Tony Duquette gilded mirror and an abalone shell chandelier. Another trend is the renovation of modernist houses with a personal touch. Artist Mary Weatherford’s reworking of her A. Quincy Jones–designed home\, in collaboration with designer Oliver Furth\, has a striking orange bedroom. Illuminating Los Angeles’s dramatic indoor-outdoor living spaces\, this tome is a must-have for architecture and design enthusiasts.” \nTim Street-Porter is the renowned Los Angeles-based architecture and design photographer that has produced numerous books\, including L.A. Modern\, Palm Springs: Modernist Paradise\, Splash: The Art of the Swimming Pool\, and Casa Mexico. \nWriter and designer Annie Kelly is the author of the successful Rooms to Inspire series\, as well as Living in Paradise\, Splash: The Art of the Swimming Pool\, and Casa Mexico. She writes about lifestyle for such publications as Belle and The Los Angeles Times.

SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Magdalena Wosinska + Special Guest Tobin Yelland
DESCRIPTION:Free \n\nJoin Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, April 13th\, between 4:00 and 6:00 PM to celebrate the publication of the Magdalena Wosinska’s amazing survey of her skateboarding photographs\, Fulfill The Dream. In addition to signing the first copies in the States of this hot-off-the-press import\, Ms. Wosinska will be engaging in a discussion with renowned cinematographer and photographer Tobin Yelland comparing their shared yet very different experiences in the heady world of the skate culture of the 1990s and beyond. \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at the shop\, please place your order here! \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n“Fulfill the Dream is a documentary photobook by Polish-born\, Los Angeles-based photographer Magdalena Wosinska that captures the American skate culture of the 1990s through color and black-and-white snapshots. The scene’s energy\, creativity\, and rebellious spirit influenced fashion\, music\, and artistic expression\, shaping a generation of American underground youth. The book features Chad Muska\, Austyn Gillette\, Jim Greco\, Harold Hunter\, Ed Templeton\, Eric Ellington\, Ali Boulala\, and numerous other influential skaters. Beyond the book’s broader examination of American skate subculture\, Wosinska’s project is a deeply personal journey through her teenage years and an exploration of what it means to be a misfit in a world of misfits. Her visual diary captures the duality that has shaped her life: the joy and exhilaration of skateboarding alongside meaningful human connection and the adrenaline-fueled world of drugs\, a first love\, prejudice\, a deep need to find a place of belonging and struggles with mental health. Shortly after immigrating to the U.S. from communist Poland in 1991\, Wosinska’s coping mechanism for culture shock was her camera. It became her passport to a world ruled by boys\, and a language for fitting in and forming heartfelt friendships in the skate community. Through raw\, visceral portraits and self-portraits created in juxtaposition to the male-dominated scene\, she captured the now-famous teen spirit of the ‘90s\, reflecting the ever-shifting balance between the highs and lows of belonging and the essence of years of making dreams come true as a skate photographer through perseverance\, diligence\, and hard work. Alongside the teenage angst of the era\, the project explores themes of resilience\, female empowerment\, and the relentless pursuit of goals.”

It has changed the conversation around inspired creativity\, technical prowess\, and even experience itself – nothing seems to be immune to the reach of AI-powered techniques. \nAt the same time\, our most urgent societal challenge is ensuring shelter for our unsheltered and housing insecure neighbors. What are the opportunities that AI technologies offer – and what are the potential risks? \nJoin Westside Urban Forum on March 21 as our panelists bring diverse perspectives on the issue through their work in government\, public policy\, venture capital\, startups\, housing development\, and urban design.
