SUMMARY:LA Rebuilds Symposium: Exhibition + Panel Discussions
DESCRIPTION:The Eaton Canyon and Palisades fires transformed the lives of so many here in Los Angeles. One year later\, the rebuild effort is well underway\, but it has not been easy. Insurance\, permitting\, infrastructure\, and inflated costs have proven challenging. No simple solution has clearly manifested. Instead\, a variety of real-world approaches have developed for bringing our communities back together. \nPlease join us on Sunday\, April 12th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm during the symposium as we take account of some of the best architectural projects permitted and being constructed in the city and county. Engage in a conversation of varied building approaches alongside a discussion from our grass-roots leaders spearheading change within our city and county. \nPoster Design by Thy Truc Ho \nRSVP required below \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nEXHIBITS BY: \nAmeen Ayoub Design Studio AADS\nAndy Kim\nBestor Architecture\nByben\nCal Poly LA Metro Students\nCasey Hughes Architects\nEhrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects\nFilosa Vol Architects\nFlorencia Pita\nGeoffrey von Oeyen Design\nJohn Friedman Alice Kimm Architects\nLehrer Architects\nMarmol Radziner\nMorphosis\nM-Rad\nOffice of Mobile Design (OMD)\nPlant Prefab\nScott Prentice Architects\nSorensen Architects\nSOTO\nSPARCHS\nStudio Antares A + E\nTighe Architecture\nWTARCH\nXTEN Architecture \n\n \n \n	\n \n \nSPEAKERS: \nBarbara Bestor\nJoy Chen\nRoseanne Landay\nSam Lubell\nLeo Marmol\nStephen Phillips\nJennifer Siegal\nSteven Somers \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nSPONSORED BY

SUMMARY:A reception\, lecture\, and Q+A discussion with Thom Mayne of Morphosis
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Thursday\, April 2\, 6:30-8:30 pm\, for a special evening with Thom Mayne of Morphosis.\nIn collaboration with the Helms Design District and the Cal Poly SLO/LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design \nHelms Design Center        \n8745 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90232 \nFree Parking is available at the corner of Helms Ave. and Venice Blvd. \nLecture is Free and Open to the Public with RSVP \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n RSVP HERE\n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n \n \nThom Mayne founded Morphosis in 1972 as a collective practice engaged in architecture\, urban planning\, and design. Working globally\, his work represents a wide variety of scales and typologies.\nMayne cofounded the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) in 1972 and continued to play an active role in architectural education. He has held teaching positions at UCLA\, Yale\, Harvard GSD\, Columbia\, the Bartlett School of Architecture\, and the University of Pennsylvania. He co-directed the NOW Institute\, a division of Morphosis that collaborates with communities\, cities\, and academic institutions to research and enhance urban environments. Mayne was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2005 and the AIA Gold Medal in 2013. From 2009 to 2016\, he served on the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities under President Barack Obama. \nIn addition to built work\, Mayne maintains active art and research practice. His recent publications include Strange Networks (Rizzoli\, 2020)\, a monograph of his recent studies of combinatory systems\, and M3: modeled works [archive] 1972-2022 (Rizzoli\, 2023)\, a survey of 50 years of Morphosis models. These investigations continue at Stray Dog Café\, his personal studio\, where he leads a team of emerging designers and students. His work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA\, SFMOMA\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, and other institutions. \nMayne’s practice reflects a sustained commitment to advancing architectural discourse through built form\, speculative research\, and civic engagement. \n  \n  \n  \n\nIntroduced and moderated by Stephen Phillips\, FAIA\, PhD\, of Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) and professor\, director\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo). \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nPhoto: Thom Mayne of Morphosis \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nSPONSORED BY

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Design Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:Helms Design District is proud to be the Westside anchor for the 2025 Los Angeles Design Festival: Design Futurism\, taking place June 26-29 at locations across the city.\n\nDesign Futurism isn’t about predicting the future—it’s about creating it. \nWhen envisioning the future\, design is inherently a part of our collective imagination: a tool for reimagining how we connect\, create\, and challenge existing narratives. This concept expands beyond the exploration of technological spectacle. Design Futurism is a solution-oriented exploration of human potential. In 2025\, LADF invites you to explore Design Futurism through various lenses of our collective human experiences. \nDesign informs every aspect of our present lives\, guiding us towards and through thoughtful experiences. The impact of forward thinking design is tangible in the smallest portions of our everyday practices through global experiences and products. \nWe’re gathering the misfits\, the dreamers\, and the radical thinkers who recognize design as a key to unlock the possibilities of an intentional future. Design Futurism is more than a concept; it’s a multidisciplinary call to action to explore connections between past\, present and the creation of an optimistic future. We’re inviting the LA community to\, to show up curious\, to experiment\, and to make connections between what is and what could be. \nJoin us to create a future where creativity meets purpose\, and design is the key to unlocking new possibilities. \n\nClick below for a full schedule of events and activities at Helms! \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n HELMS EVENT SCHEDULE\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n  \nVisit the LA Design Festival site for a list of events at all locations citywide. \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n LA DESIGN FESTIVAL SITE

SUMMARY:Architecture: Rebuilding Value
DESCRIPTION:Making a hasty move to “build together” cookie-cutter Mediterranean-\, Craftsman-\, Ranch-\, or Colonial-style houses can’t be undone and will change the very fabric that makes Los Angeles wonderful! In the aftermath of one of the worst devastations in Los Angeles’ history\, a panel of renowned professionals in architecture\, construction\, and real estate will come together at the Helms Design Center on Thursday\, April 10th\, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm to discuss the present opportunity to rebuild our communities with lasting beauty\, value\, and sustainability. \nLooking at the past to rethink the future\, this panel talk — Architecture: Rebuilding Value — will reflect on the Berkeley-Oakland fire of 1991 as a starting point to move past the impulse to reconstruct mass-produced tract houses. Instead\, we will focus on creating cost-effective\, artistic\, and sustainable designs that not only preserve our environment but also enhance our local culture\, community\, and quality of life for generations to come. \nHelms Design Center        \n8745 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90232 \nReception: 6:00 pm\nPresentations: 6:30 pm\nQ&A: immediately following \nSorry\, this event has reached capacity. SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Architect Lorcan O'Herlihy and Historian Greg Goldin
DESCRIPTION:Join Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, November 16th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM for a book signing and conversation between noted Los Angeles-based architect Lorcan O’Herlihy and architectural historian (and co-author) Greg Goldin to celebrate the publication of the brand new Rizzoli  monograph Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects: Building In Place: Architecture Rooted in Context and Social Equity. \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at the shop\, please place your order below. \nORDER YOUR COPY\nWe look forward to seeing you! \nLorcan O’Herlihy\, FAIA\, Founding Principal\, Creative Director of LOHA\, seeks opportunities to engage with the ever-changing complexities of the urban landscape\, while embracing architecture as a catalyst of change. Since founding his firm in 1994\, his work has been guided by a conscious understanding that architecture operates within a layered context of political\, developmental\, environmental\, and social structures. With offices in Los Angeles and Detroit\, his firm has built over one hundred projects across three continents. The diverse work ranges from art galleries\, bus shelters\, and large-scale neighborhood studies\, to large mixed-use developments\, affordable housing projects\, and university residential complexes. Each project exhibits Lorcan’s belief that artistry and social connectivity are key to building vibrant spaces that elevate the human condition. \nGreg Goldin is the author most recently of An Atlas of Never Built Architecture. He was born and raised in Los Angeles\, living at first in suburbia\, next in the geographic center of the city in a neighborhood with two early Schindler houses and Gregory Ain’s Dunsmuir Apartments. Those buildings inspired his interest in architecture. After many years as a political reporter\, he jumped ship and became the Architecture Critic at Los Angeles Magazine\, a twelve-year stint that led to the book Never Built Los Angeles (Metropolis Books\, 2013) and the exhibition Never Built Los Angeles\, which premiered at the A+D Architecture and Design Museum\, Los Angeles\, in July 2013. He was the recipient of a coveted Getty Research Institute grant for Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A. in 2011. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter\, where he continues to unearth untold architectural tales and unbuilt architectural projects.

Imaginative and ambitious\, the projects reveal the incredible diversity of ideas that have emerged from the world’s most influential architects—and many you’ve never heard of. Spanning nearly 80 countries\, the book presents concepts for projects of all types: museums\, art galleries\, cemeteries\, churches\, bridges\, skyscrapers\, hotels\, theme parks\, casinos\, opera houses\, government buildings\, and even a floating theatre boat that resembles a UFO. Seen together\, the projects conjure a strange and wonderful new world while simultaneously offering insight into how architectural projects have been conceived and developed (and dashed) over the last 100 years. The book also includes previously unpublished prints\, paintings\, drawings\, etchings\, preparatory sketches\, and images that bring these alternate histories to life. \nSam Lubell is Editor at Large at Metropolis. He has written more than ten books about architecture for Phaidon\, Rizzoli\, The Monacelli Press\, Metropolis Books\, and Oro Editions. He writes for The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, Fast Company\, Architectural Digest\, Wallpaper\, Dwell\, Architect Magazine\, and other publications. He resides in Los Angeles where he continues a family tradition of being a thorn in the side of the rich and powerful. \nFrances Anderton covers Los Angeles design and architecture in print\, broadcast media and public events. She is the author of Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles\, which won the 2022 Gold award for best Regional Nonfiction from Foreword Reviews. She is co-author of Awesome and Affordable: Great Housing Now\, a multimedia project produced in 2024 by Friends of Residential Treasures: Los Angeles (FORT: LA). She has co-produced short films for the nonprofit housing developers Community Corporation of Santa Monica and Venice Community Housing. SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Tim Street-Porter and Annie Kelly for City of Dreams: Los Angeles Interiors
DESCRIPTION:Free \n\nJoin Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, April 20th\, between 4:00 and 6:00 PM for a book signing with Annie Kelly and Tim Street-Porter to celebrate the publication of their latest sumptuous architecture and design survey\, City of Dreams: Los Angeles Interiors. \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at Arcana\, please place your order here! \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n“Los Angeles’ Tim Street-Porter has been chronicling this metropolis’ architecture and interiors for over twenty-five years. This stunning collection of inspiring homes begins with a look back\, which includes examples of iconic houses inspired by Hollywood film fantasies\, Modernist residences by such luminaries as John Lautner\, and Frank Gehry’s Deconstructivism-style home. The heart of the book features today’s forward-looking homes\, divided into two sections: Living with Art and Design and Los Angeles Modern. Antiquarian Joel Chen artfully blends an eye-catching collection of period furniture and Chinese objets while interior designer Jean-Louis Denoit’s house sparkles with a Tony Duquette gilded mirror and an abalone shell chandelier. Another trend is the renovation of modernist houses with a personal touch. Artist Mary Weatherford’s reworking of her A. Quincy Jones–designed home\, in collaboration with designer Oliver Furth\, has a striking orange bedroom. Illuminating Los Angeles’s dramatic indoor-outdoor living spaces\, this tome is a must-have for architecture and design enthusiasts.” \nTim Street-Porter is the renowned Los Angeles-based architecture and design photographer that has produced numerous books\, including L.A. Modern\, Palm Springs: Modernist Paradise\, Splash: The Art of the Swimming Pool\, and Casa Mexico. \nWriter and designer Annie Kelly is the author of the successful Rooms to Inspire series\, as well as Living in Paradise\, Splash: The Art of the Swimming Pool\, and Casa Mexico. She writes about lifestyle for such publications as Belle and The Los Angeles Times.
