DESCRIPTION:Please join Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, September 20th\, between 4:00 and 6:00 PM as they welcome Los Angeles artist David Alekhuogie to celebrate the release of his new Aperture publication\, A Reprise. In addition to signing copies\, he will engage in a discussion of the book and his work with fellow Los Angeles artist Awol Erizku. \n“A Reprise\, David Alekhuogie’s first monograph\, confronts the intriguing legacy of narrative and authorship behind Western presentations of African art\, and poses timely questions about how Black aesthetics are circulated\, accessed\, valued\, and interpreted today. In 1935\, Walker Evans was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art\, New York\, to photograph hundreds of African sculptures for the exhibition African Negro Art. Nearly ninety years later\, Alekhuogie began investigating Evans’s images\, provocatively remixing them into his own vibrant and multilayered photographic collages. Transposing facsimiles of Evans’s original images onto cardboard or paper structures of his own making\, Alekhuogie rephotographs these image-sculptures against striking backdrops — often using East and West African textiles — thereby inviting multiple dimensions of viewership. Alekhuogie’s images draw upon the musical idiom of the reprise — a performance of repetition — and stake a claim to crucial\, restorative ideas around Black antiquity by questioning our relationship to what we consider fake or original\, art or archive.” \nThe discussion will begin at 4:20 PM. His work was included in “Companion Pieces\,” the 2020 iteration of MoMA’s biannual New Photography exhibition\, and in “Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth” at the California African American Art Museum in Los Angeles. In 2019\, he was the recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. Alekhuogie has had solo exhibitions at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery\, CA (2019); Commonwealth and Council\, Los Angeles\, CA (2019); Skibum MacArthur\, Los Angeles\, CA (2017); and at the Chicago Artist Coalition (2016). His work has been published in The New Yorker\, the New York Times\, Time Magazine\, Timeout\, Chicago\, Vice\, and The Los Angeles Times.” \nBorn in Gondar\, Ethiopia\, in 1988\, Awol Erizku is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography\, film\, sculpture and installation\, creating a new vernacular that bridges the gap between African and African American visual culture. Erizku’s work refers to subjects as diverse as art history\, hip-hop\, and spirituality\, rejecting Eurocentric notions of art and beauty in favor of building an Afrocentric aesthetic\, something he refers to as “Afro-esotericism.” With a distinctive emphasis on reclaiming and reinterpreting historical narratives within a contemporary context\, the artist’s work challenges viewers to reconsider conventional perspectives on art and society through a lens that merges personal narrative with broader socio-political commentary. Erizku received a BFA from The Cooper Union\, New York\, in 2010\, and an MFA from the Yale School of Art\, New Haven\, in 2014. His work has been exhibited at prominent institutions including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art\, Arkansas; Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)\, New York; The Studio Museum\, Harlem; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Toronto; FLAG Art Foundation\, New York; and SCAD Museum of Art\, Savannah. Erizku also brings high concept to commercial photography highlighting cultural and creative leaders for publications such as The New Yorker\, New York Magazine\, GQ\, and Vanity Fair.

GOAL\, a non-profit organization committed to creating opportunities and equity for adults with developmental disabilities so they can live more fulfilling lives\, presents Moving Together\, an inclusive art exhibit exploring the theme of “movement” through various art forms. \nMoving Together is an art exhibit that explores various interpretations of “movement” through art created by artists in Los Angeles County. The exhibit will showcase the artwork of L.A. GOAL’s professional Artists with developmental disabilities alongside artwork created by artists from the broader community. \n“We are thrilled to showcase the incredible talent of our Artists at L.A. Here housing’s problem is split into two: a social one of accessibility and equity\, and a material one of wood\, metal\, and rocks. Architects can play a unique role in bridging abstract policy ambitions to real construction as these connections are made every day in practice. \nAlthough accessible housing has been cast in many forms\, accessory dwelling units (ADUs) have been a catalyst for including architects in direct policy development. For the first time\, cities are directly contracting with architects to provide designs for private property through pre-approved ADU programs. These programs reflect a plurality of ideas\, though without rigorous consideration for how the costs of site work\, labor\, materials\, and energy make quality housing sustainable. \nSmall Infrastructures is an exhibition of ADU designs that uses the economics of building assembly as the groundwork for experimentation and addresses how cities can work with architects to build quality\, affordable housing under the American Jobs Plan. Ten architects teaching at Harvard GSD and Berkeley CED consider the overlaps between academia\, where cost is often external to conceptual work\, and practice\, where budgeting is an integral task. He lives and works in Brighton and Devon. In January 2020 the artist was awarded the decoration of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or OBE. Shrigley’s quick-witted drawings and hand-rendered texts are typically deadpan in their humor and reveal chance utterings like snippets of over-heard conversations. Recurring themes and thoughts pervade his storytelling\, capturing deliberately two-dimensional views of the world\, the perspective of aliens and monsters or the compulsive habits of an eavesdropper shouting out loud. While drawing is at the center of his practice\, Shrigley works across an extensive range of media including sculpture\, large-scale installation\, animation\, painting\, photography and music. He consistently seeks to widen his audience by operating outside the gallery sphere\, including producing artist publications and creating collaborative music projects.

Welcome Blanket is a platform for engagement that transforms this abstraction into a tangible\, crowd-sourced\, artistic action. Participants use their heads\, hearts\, hands\, and histories to craft the country they wish to see. \nWelcome Blanket was initially a response to the proposed 2000-mile border wall between Mexico and the United States. The project reimagined the 2000-mile length\, one of exclusion\, as 2000 miles of yarn to make individual welcome blankets for refugees coming to the United States. Handcraft makers who knit\, sew\, quilt\, crochet\, weave\, felt\, etc.\, use any textile to make 40 inch x 40 inch blankets that are easy to care for and hard to give away. They included stories important to their families about immigration\, migration\, or relocation\, creating symbolic and practical gifts of welcome for new refugees coming to the United States. These gifts are collected\, cataloged\, and displayed at art and cultural institutions. During these exhibits\, the message of welcome is amplified through hosting craft circles\, performances\, discussions\, forums\, and legal assistance for immigrants. Over 6500 have been made and distributed. \nAfter reaching our initial goal of 2000 miles of yarn\, resulting in 3400 blankets\, the impact was clear. And the makers reflected the diversity of this country: the youngest was 4 and the oldest 104; there were evangelical Christians\, Muslims\, Jews\, Buddhists; and there were makers from a wide range of political leanings. After each show’s close\, Welcome Blanket’s 30+ partner refugee resettlement groups present these tangible gifts of welcome to our newest neighbors. \nWelcome Blanket makes its inaugural Los Angeles exhibit at Helms Bakery District and will continue at Skirball Cultural Center and LAX airport. They have a few copies remaining of the quickly sold out first edition that can be ordered while supplies last. \nEastsiders is the brand new collection of Gregory Bojorquez’ images spanning over twenty-five years of the noted Los Angeles photographer’s vision. “This book showcases the robust body of work of Bojorquez\, photographs depicting the complex\, but also celebratory\, reality of Los Angeles’s vast Eastside. Not only the tattoos\, clothing\, and walls related to La Vida Loca\, but also the mothers\, the gardens\, the children\, the working men\, the decorated lowrider cars\, the spirit of resiliency.” – Luis J Rodriguez \nGregory Bojorquez was born in Los Angeles in 1972. He started photographing in his teens\, and set about documenting the subjects and stories that interested him personally. The intimate images he captured in East L.A. were not the product of structured photo sessions or assignments. They were shot from the perspective of a young man hanging out with friends and neighbors. In the late 1980s Gregory began photographing for the L.A. Weekly and was added as a staff photographer. Assignments for magazines and commercial work for major record labels naturally followed. His portraits of personalities such as Snoop Dogg and Mike Tyson appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone and For His magazine. In 1999 Gregory became instrumental in the early beginnings of DUB Magazine where he was brought on as Photo Editor and a feature photographer for a period of more than seven years. Since that time\, Gregory’s photographs have been exhibited internationally in gallery shows\, museum exhibitions\, and art fairs including Photo London\, Paris Photo\, and Art Düsseldorf. His work is represented by Galerie Bene Taschen in Koln\, and by Little Big Man in Los Angeles; who has published this spectacular volume. \n
