SUMMARY:Small Infrastructures: Exhibition & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Free \nHelms Design Center\n8745 Washington Boulevard\nCulver City\, CA 90232 \n\nExhibition Opening & Panel Discussion: \nThursday\, March 30\, 2023\n6:30 to 8:30 pm \nJoin us on Thursday\, March 30th at the Helms Design Center for a reception and thought-provoking panel discussion featuring Rudabeh Pakravan from Sidell Pakravan Architects\, Andrew Atwood from First Office\, and Melissa Shin from Shin Shin Architecture. The discussion will explore how building assembly can provide a strong foundation for experimentation in designing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). \nRSVP\n\nExhibition Viewing Hours: \nFriday\, March 31: 12:00 to 5:00 pm\nSaturday\, April 1: 12:00 to 4:00 pm\nSunday\, April 2: 12:00 to 4:00 pm \n\nIn March 2021\, the Biden Administration released the American Jobs Plan\, earmarking $213B for “quality” and “affordable” housing\, yet the bill lacks specificity on how houses are to be built. Here housing’s problem is split into two: a social one of accessibility and equity\, and a material one of wood\, metal\, and rocks. Architects can play a unique role in bridging abstract policy ambitions to real construction as these connections are made every day in practice. \nAlthough accessible housing has been cast in many forms\, accessory dwelling units (ADUs) have been a catalyst for including architects in direct policy development. For the first time\, cities are directly contracting with architects to provide designs for private property through pre-approved ADU programs. These programs reflect a plurality of ideas\, though without rigorous consideration for how the costs of site work\, labor\, materials\, and energy make quality housing sustainable. \nSmall Infrastructures is an exhibition of ADU designs that uses the economics of building assembly as the groundwork for experimentation and addresses how cities can work with architects to build quality\, affordable housing under the American Jobs Plan. Ten architects teaching at Harvard GSD and Berkeley CED consider the overlaps between academia\, where cost is often external to conceptual work\, and practice\, where budgeting is an integral task. The architectural design of each office will be represented by two boards and a 3/8″ = 1′-0″ handmade architectural model. \nCurated by Michelle Chang and Rudabeh Pakravan \n\nParticipants Include:\nLyndon Neri & Rossana Hu\, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office\nLisa Iwamoto\, IwamotoScott Architecture\nSean Canty\, Studio Sean Canty (SSC)\nAndrew Atwood\, First Office\nYasmin Vobis\, Ultramoderne\nMark Anderson\, Anderson Anderson Architecture\nNeyran Turan\, NEMESTUDIO\nMichelle Chang\, JaJa Co.\nRudabeh Pakravan\, Sidell Pakravan Architects

SUMMARY:Closing Day for the Exhibition In Harmony with Nature: The Architectural Work of James Hubbell
DESCRIPTION:Helms Design Center\n8745 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\nExhibition runs April 22 – June 18\, 2022\nViewing hours:  12 PM – 5 PM \nJames Hubbell is a painter\, sculptor and architectural designer who has spent 60 years designing and making buildings\, artifacts and fine artworks that reflect a deep passion for the ocean and for earth’s gifts. From Ilan Lael\, his self-made home\, workshops and foundation in Julian near San Diego\, Hubbell has created schools in concert with the community in Tijuana\, an organic chapel at Sea Ranch\, and parks that span the cultures of the Pacific Rim. \nHubbell’s vision is the antithesis of rational and industrial. “Most important is my infatuation with nature\,” he says. “There is also my love of the primitive and naive\, gothic architecture\, the arts and craft movement\, Frank Lloyd Wright\, Gaudi\, and the pleasure of working with the material of stone\, wood\, cement\, clay\, metal\, glass\, and mosaics.” \nNow Angelenos can see his architectural work shown for the first time in L.A. at an exhibition opening on Earth Day at Helms Bakery District in Culver City. The installation brings to life Ilan-Lael\, his Pacific Rim Park and schools in Tijuana\, his chapel at Sea Ranch as well as stunning doors\, windows and other decorative building elements including his extraordinary stained glass window for Findhorn\, the spiritual retreat in Scotland. \nAbove: The Sea Ranch Chapel by James Hubbell | Photo © Craig Tooley\, Ruffimage.com\n\n \n \n \n\n \n	\n \n \nBoys' House\, Ilan-Lael\, Julian\, CA | Photo ©John Durant\n\n\nJames Hubbell | Photo ©Don Musial\n\n\nBoys' House Interior\, Ilan-Lael\, Julian\, CA | Photo ©John Durant\n\n\nJames Hubbell in his studio | Photo ©John Durant\n\n\nInterior of The Sea Ranch Chapel | Photo ©Craig Tooley\n\n\nJames Hubbell's Firebird | Photo ©Laurel Costa\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Art as Community | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Firebird Window | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Sea Ranch Chapel | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Sea Ranch Chapel | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \nAll artwork is copyrighted work of the artists. DESCRIPTION:Helms Design Center\n8745 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\nExhibition runs April 22 – June 18\, 2022\nViewing hours: Friday-Sunday\, 12 PM – 5 PM \nJames Hubbell is a painter\, sculptor and architectural designer who has spent 60 years designing and making buildings\, artifacts and fine artworks that reflect a deep passion for the ocean and for earth’s gifts. SUMMARY:Seeding the City: A Nature-Inspired Event @Helms
DESCRIPTION:Free\nSaturday | April 23\, 2022\n11:00 AM to 5:00 PM\nCampus-Wide Event \nThe Southland was once a garden of Eden. Now\, as Los Angeles continues to build up its cityscape\, connection to the land is out of reach for many. This rupture was underscored by the pandemic\, when access to clean air\, open space\, plants and pets became an essential tonic. \nBut talented and creative designers are finding ways to green the City in ways beyond the traditional backyard\, injecting trees onto rooftops\, flowers under transit lines and plants into defunct concrete pools. They are reclaiming the wild and bringing back long-vanished birds and bees. Artists and writers are creating works reflecting on new ways of coexistence with all species. \nSeeding The City celebrates the 21st century garden in Los Angeles with a daylong program of talks\, tours\, and popups\, featuring some of LA’s leading landscape designers and thinkers. \nSee a full schedule of events here: https://helmsdesigndistrict.com/seeding-the-city/ \nThank you to our media sponsor\, KCRW.

\nIn Harmony with Nature coincides with Seeding The City\, a day-long program of talks\, pop-ups and walking tours at Helms Bakery District\, taking place April 23\, that offer up new ideas about landscaping and gardening in our increasingly urbanized megalopolis. \nAbove: The Sea Ranch Chapel by James Hubbell | Photo © Craig Tooley\, Ruffimage.com\n\n \n \n \n\n \n	\n \n \nBoys' House\, Ilan-Lael\, Julian\, CA | Photo ©John Durant\n\n\nJames Hubbell | Photo ©Don Musial\n\n\nBoys' House Interior\, Ilan-Lael\, Julian\, CA | Photo ©John Durant\n\n\nJames Hubbell in his studio | Photo ©John Durant\n\n\nInterior of The Sea Ranch Chapel | Photo ©Craig Tooley\n\n\nJames Hubbell's Firebird | Photo ©Laurel Costa\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Art as Community | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Firebird Window | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Sea Ranch Chapel | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\nJames Hubbell Exhibition - Sea Ranch Chapel | Photo ©Titano Cruz\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n	\n \n \nAll artwork is copyrighted work of the artists. SUMMARY:Book Signing + Conversation with Rohina Hoffman and Aline Smithson
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, May 18th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join us at Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing and conversation with Rohina Hoffman and Aline Smithson in celebration of the launch of Hair Stories. \nHair Stories is a series of excerpted interviews and color portraits of a diverse array of women that explores the complex relationship women have with their hair. Indian-born\, Los Angeles–based photographer Rohina Hoffman deployed the interviewing skills she has developed in her training as a neurologist to establish an intimate rapport that allowed for a truthful dialogue about the role of hair in these women’s lives. Though conceived and shot before the #MeToo movement\, this salient project presents hair as a metaphor for identity\, femininity\, and the manner in which women struggle for control over their own bodies in a sometimes misogynistic world. Hair Stories shows that hair is more than just style or aesthetics; it is a physical manifestation of the ongoing hope and history of women. \nBorn in India and raised in New Jersey\, Rohina Hoffman is a fine art photographer whose practice uses portraiture and the natural world to investigate themes of identity\, home\, women’s issues\, and adolescence. A graduate of Brown University Medical School and resident at UCLA Medical Center\, her training led to a career as a neurologist. While an undergraduate at Brown University\, Rohina also studied photography at RISD and was a staff photographer for the Brown Daily Herald. A skilled observer of her patients\, Rohina was instilled with a deep and unique appreciation of the human experience. Her ability to forge the sacred trust between doctor and patient has been instrumental in fostering a parallel connection between photographer and subject. \nAline Smithson is an artist\, educator\, and editor based in Los Angeles. She is best known for her conceptual portraiture and a practice that uses humor and pathos to explore the performative potential of photography. Growing up in the shadow of Hollywood\, her work is influenced by the elevated unreal. She received a BA in art from the University of California at Santa Barbara and was accepted into the College of Creative Studies. After a decade-long career as a New York Fashion Editor\, Aline returned to Los Angeles and to her own artistic practice. She founded LENSCRATCH\, a photography journal that celebrates a different contemporary photographer each day\, has been the Gallery Editor for Light Leaks Magazine\, and has curated and jurored numerous exhibitions.

SUMMARY:Opening Exhibition with Artist Liza Philosof at the Helms Design Center
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, November 15th from  7 to 10 pm\, please join us for the opening event of L A Y E R S\, the first solo exhibition by Liza Philosof to take place in Los Angeles. \nL A Y E R S contains paintings made by Philosof between 2015 and 2018\, along with a video made last year during an art residence on Pico Island.  One of the major inspiration sources for the artist was her visit to Pico Island and being surrounded by 3 elements: water\, basalt stone\, and plants. Some paintings are drawn with markers on canvas\, with most of the paintings produced with acrylics during the summer of 2018. \n“I see my paintings as a visual extension of my emotional journey in life. A reflection of the struggles and challenges we all have. Climbing a mountain or crossing an ocean are just metaphors of deep tectonic movement happening in our souls. Nature has endless layers\, as we have. In paintings\, I try to embrace observing nature with an interpretation of what our inner world looks like. I feel that one of my secret missions is to continue to see life in color.” \nAbout the Artist \nLiza Philosof is a visual artist\, art director\, and graphic designer based in West Hollywood and originally from Israel. Philosof is currently working with designers and artists\, but continues to participate in exhibitions\, festivals\, projects\, and partnerships all over the world. Brand collaborations include: Adidas originals\, Absolut\, Heineken\, Insight\, Azores Fringe Festival\, and Cannes Film Festival. Philosof graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem in 2011\, where her experimentation with color and shape depths began. \nFor more info about the artist:  lizaphilosof.com | liza.philosof@gmail.com | eventbrite | Facebook | Instagram \nClosing event: Thursday\, November 29th\, 7 to 10 pm

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing For "Courts 02" By Ward Roberts
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 28th from 5 to 7PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts along with Éditions for a book launch and signing for Courts 02 by Ward Roberts. Following the release of Courts in 2012\, New York-based photographer Ward Roberts releases the second volume of his comprehensive body of work documenting sporting courts in Hong Kong\, Bermuda\, Hawaii\, New York\, and Melbourne. \nPublisher Éditions has produced two separate releases of the book – a standard edition plus a collector’s edition limited to one hundred examples – and for the very first time a selection of three 23 x 23″ color prints that will be on display and available for sale at the event. \n“As all iconic images inevitably do\, Ward Roberts’ Courts have now become a force of their own\, circulating the world with terrific velocity via the rushing slipstream of the Internet\, gathering momentum and making their mark upon the global eye. His work has brought together a growing community of followers\, with whom he feels a humble sense of connection. This is\, in a sense\, the most beautiful reflection of the essence of what makes his images so riveting\, his art so powerful: he gives life to the spaces of photography\, and photography to the spaces of life”. – Excerpt from Jennifer Kransinki’s foreword to Courts 02\, 2016. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\n310.458.1499 \n
