SUMMARY:Architecture: Rebuilding Value
DESCRIPTION:Making a hasty move to “build together” cookie-cutter Mediterranean-\, Craftsman-\, Ranch-\, or Colonial-style houses can’t be undone and will change the very fabric that makes Los Angeles wonderful! In the aftermath of one of the worst devastations in Los Angeles’ history\, a panel of renowned professionals in architecture\, construction\, and real estate will come together at the Helms Design Center on Thursday\, April 10th\, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm to discuss the present opportunity to rebuild our communities with lasting beauty\, value\, and sustainability. \nLooking at the past to rethink the future\, this panel talk — Architecture: Rebuilding Value — will reflect on the Berkeley-Oakland fire of 1991 as a starting point to move past the impulse to reconstruct mass-produced tract houses. Instead\, we will focus on creating cost-effective\, artistic\, and sustainable designs that not only preserve our environment but also enhance our local culture\, community\, and quality of life for generations to come. \nHelms Design Center        \n8745 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90232 \nReception: 6:00 pm\nPresentations: 6:30 pm\nQ&A: immediately following \nSorry\, this event has reached capacity. Imaginative and ambitious\, the projects reveal the incredible diversity of ideas that have emerged from the world’s most influential architects—and many you’ve never heard of. Spanning nearly 80 countries\, the book presents concepts for projects of all types: museums\, art galleries\, cemeteries\, churches\, bridges\, skyscrapers\, hotels\, theme parks\, casinos\, opera houses\, government buildings\, and even a floating theatre boat that resembles a UFO. Seen together\, the projects conjure a strange and wonderful new world while simultaneously offering insight into how architectural projects have been conceived and developed (and dashed) over the last 100 years. The book also includes previously unpublished prints\, paintings\, drawings\, etchings\, preparatory sketches\, and images that bring these alternate histories to life. \nSam Lubell is Editor at Large at Metropolis. He has written more than ten books about architecture for Phaidon\, Rizzoli\, The Monacelli Press\, Metropolis Books\, and Oro Editions. He writes for The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, Fast Company\, Architectural Digest\, Wallpaper\, Dwell\, Architect Magazine\, and other publications. He has co-curated four major architecture exhibitions and taught as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University School of Architecture\, Columbia University GSAPP\, and Arizona State University The Design School. \nFor more than a decade\, Greg Goldin was Architecture Critic at Los Angeles Magazine. He has written a half dozen books about architecture for Phaidon\, Rizzoli\, and Metropolis Books. He resides in Los Angeles where he continues a family tradition of being a thorn in the side of the rich and powerful. \nFrances Anderton covers Los Angeles design and architecture in print\, broadcast media and public events. She is the author of Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles\, which won the 2022 Gold award for best Regional Nonfiction from Foreword Reviews. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 19th\, 6:30-8:30 pm\, for a reception\, lecture\, and discussion with Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich\, P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S\nIn collaboration with the Helms Bakery District and the Cal Poly SLO LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design \nHELMS DESIGN CENTER        \n8745 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90232 \nFree Parking is available at the corner of Helms Ave. and Venice Blvd. \nLecture is Free and Open to the Public \nRSVP\n\nP-A-T-T-E-R-N-S \nBorn and raised in Rosario\, Argentina\, Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich are both renowned architects and distinguished educators. Together\, they lead Los Angeles-based and award-winning architectural practice P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S\, which they founded in 2002 as a speculative platform to explore an increasingly global design culture. Their work reveals a rigorous and progressive approach to projects and buildings across materials\, scales\, agendas and geographies\, insisting on the cultural and social relevance of architectural form\, contemporary aesthetics and emerging technologies. Their books include PATTERNS: Embedded\, the studio first monograph published in 2010 by Shanghai based ACDCU and Mute Icons & Other Dichotomies of the Real in Architecture recently released by ACTAR Press. Marcelo Spina is a Design Faculty at SCI-Arc and Georgina Huljich is an Associate Professor at UCLA AUD. \nP-A-T-T-E-R-N-S is a leading architectural practice led by partners Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich. The studio brings a critical and progressive approach to projects across scales\, programs\, and geographies\, insisting on the cultural and social relevance of architectural form\, contemporary aesthetics\, and emerging technologies. Based in Los Angeles\, the forward-looking studio takes advantage of the city’s decidedly global stance and idiosyncratic identity to create engaging and speculative architectural projects that become civic and cultural landmarks within the public realm. \nP-A-T-T-E-R-N-S gained international recognition as one of the most intriguing and broadminded firms in contemporary architecture with work exhibited worldwide\, most notably at the Venice Biennale in Italy\, The Chicago Biennial\, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, The San Francisco MOMA\, The MAK Museum in Vienna\, and The FRAC in Orleans\, where it is also part of their permanent collections. \nP-A-T-T-E-R-N-S work has been published extensively and has been the subject of numerous essays\, books\, magazines\, newspapers\, and catalogues. \nP-A-T-T-E-R-N-S is a registered Women Owned Business\, Minority Owned Business and Small Business Enterprise. \nIntroduced and moderated by Stephen Phillips\, FAIA\, PhD\, Principal of Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) and professor\, director\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo). \nPhotos (Left to Right): Image of A4H Office Building\, 2020\, Image of Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich\, Image of Prism Gallery\, 2013.\n \n

SUMMARY:A reception\, lecture\, and discussion with Peter Tolkin and Sarah Lorenzen\, TOLO Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 5th\, 6:30-8:30 pm\, for a reception\, lecture\, and discussion with Peter Tolkin and Sarah Lorenzen\, TOLO Architecture\nIn collaboration with the Helms Bakery District and the Cal Poly SLO LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design \nHELMS DESIGN CENTER        \n8745 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90232 \nFree Parking is available at the corner of Helms Ave. and Venice Blvd. \nLecture is Free and Open to the Public \nRSVP\n\nTOLO Architecture \nPeter Tolkin + Sarah Lorenzen Architecture (working under the moniker TOLO) design projects that are meaningful to the people that use them\, and that are reflective of the time and place in which they are built. We work out of a renovated warehouse at the nexus of the Arts District\, Little Tokyo and Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. First founded by Peter Tolkin in 2000\, our studio has designed and built projects of various types and scales\, including creative workspaces\, single and multi-family housing\, mixed-use and retail\, restaurants and hotels\, and arts-based projects. TOLO’s designs draw from the rich material and cultural conditions that characterize the world we live in. Rather than conceiving our architectural role as primarily inventors of form\, we also see our role as one that interprets and shapes relationships and situations. \nPeter Tolkin\, AIA is managing principal of TOLO Architecture. Peter founded the practice\, previously called Peter Tolkin Architecture\, in 2002 and since then has led the design of dozens of residential\, commercial\, cultural and arts-related projects. At TOLO\, Peter advocates for the social and cultural agency of architecture\, an approach informed by his prior work as a documentary photographer and his studies with American artists Allan Sekula and Lewis Baltz. Peter first rose to prominence in 2002 when Architectural Record named him one of its ten emerging international “Design Vanguard” architects. Peter received a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History from UC Santa Cruz\, a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)\, and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University. \nSarah Lorenzen\, AIA is principal at TOLO Architecture and an architecture professor at Cal Poly Pomona (where she was department chair from 2012-2016). Sarah has practiced architecture for more than 20 years\, working on a variety of building types including educational\, residential\, institutional\, and arts-related projects. Prior to TOLO Architecture\, Sarah worked as a project architect at a number of award-winning firms in Atlanta\, San Francisco and Los Angeles. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Drawing at Smith College and at the Atlanta College of Art\, and has two Master of Architecture degrees\, the first from Georgia Institute of Technology and the second from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc). Sarah has published and edited articles on architecture and urbanism\, and has received multiple design awards and grants including several Graham Foundation grants\, a Fulbright Fellowship\, and a travel fellowship to China. \nPhotos (Left to Right): Image of Peter Tolkin\, Image of Night Gallery\, 2022\, Image of Sarah Lorenzen.\n \nIntroduced and moderated by Stephen Phillips\, FAIA\, PhD\, Principal of Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) and professor\, director\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo) and Jimenez Lai\, Principal of Bureau Spectacular and faculty\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo)

Through Place It!\, he has developed an interdisciplinary\, community-healing\, visioning\, and outreach process that uses storytelling\, objects\, art-production\, and play to help improve the urban-planning outreach process. He is now an international expert in public engagement and has traveled around the US\, Mexico\, Canada\, Europe\, and South America\, facilitating over 500 workshops\, and building over 100 interactive models. His research has appeared in The New York Times\, Los Angeles Times\, Dwell\, Places\, and in numerous books. Relevant areas of expertise include using model-building as a means of community and planning outreach; working with underserved\, disadvantaged communities and bringing overlooked voices to the planning discussion; making the physical form of cities relevant to broad audiences; and understanding how immigrants—especially Latino immigrants—see and understand urban and suburban space in the US and why they often times reshape those forms in the ways that they do. \nJohn Kamp runs the landscape\, design\, and engagement practice Prairieform. He has developed innovative tools to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in urban and landscape design\, transportation\, walkability\, climate change\, and water conservation. Frequently collaborating with Rojas\, and building off of his 15 years of experience in landscape and urban design/build\, he is able to translate findings from Place It!’s community-engagement workshops and trainings into designs for inclusive and livable streets and neighborhoods that leave room for all residents to improvise and help create a more welcoming public realm. \nIntroduced and moderated by Stephen Phillips\, AIA\, PhD\, Principal of Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) and professor\, director\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo). \nPhotos (Left to Right): Image of John Kamp\, Image from Dream\, Play\, Build: Hands-On Community Engagement for Enduring Spaces and Places\, Image of James Rojas.

SUMMARY:A lecture and live Q+A discussion with Ernestina Osorio
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 13th\, for a lecture and live Q+A discussion with Ernestina Osorio\nInterdependence and the Construction of a Transnational Discourse of Mexican Modernism\nIn collaboration with the Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design \nLecture is Free and Open to the Public \nRegister for the  Zoom Webinar\n\nErnestina Osorio \nErnestina Osorio teaches courses on the history and theory of architecture\, art\, and visual culture. She completed her Ph.D. in the History and Theory of Architecture at Princeton University after finishing her undergraduate studies with Distinction in Art History and Spanish literature at UC Santa Barbara\, earning a professional degree in Architecture at UCLA\, and practicing architecture and urban design. Her writing focuses on Mexico and studies architecture’s relation to cultural memory\, visual culture\, media\, and urbanism. Osorio’s interests have been augmented by migration and travel experiences and the notion of constructed boundaries in the landscape and horizon. Her work explores built environments in Latin America and their diverse influences and tendencies\, from Indigenous knowledge systems\, the effects of ideological and technological developments\, to the dissemination of architectural ideas across geographical and theoretical terrains. This presentation is part of an interdisciplinary project that examines the transnational and intercultural provocations\, exchange\, reception\, and representation of Mexican architectural modernisms and the intellectual genealogies that shaped them. Osorio discusses how a convergence of architecture\, art\, photography\, traditional arts\, and anthropology in the early to mid-twentieth century represented attempts within these areas to highlight the inextricable link between Indigenous knowledge and Modernism in Mexico. \n\nIntroduced and moderated by Stephen Phillips\, AIA\, PhD\, Principal of Stephen Phillips Architects (SPARCHS) and professor\, director\, Cal Poly LA Metro Program in Architecture and Urban Design (California Polytechnic State University\, San Luis Obispo) \nPhotos (Left to Right): Image of Ernestina Osorio; Image of the Pyramid of Cuicuilco; Image of Modotti Stairs.
