SUMMARY:A Conversation with Architect-Filmmaker-Futurist Liam Young
DESCRIPTION:Free\nPlanet City — a Radical Solution to Climate Destruction \nOn Thursday\, November 4th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm\, Textile Arts | Los Angeles and Helms Bakery District invite you to hear Liam Young\, in conversation with Frances Anderton and Benjamin Bratton at the Helms Design Center. \nRSVP HERE\nForget carbon taxes and global commitments to use renewables. Climate change demands bigger solutions\, like moving all ten billion people on earth to one giant city\, leaving the rest of the world to return to the wild\, free from human predation. That’s the vision laid out by Liam Young\, architect-filmmaker-futurist\, in his new film and book\, Planet City\, showcasing a future world in which flora\, fauna and humankind coexist in the Anthropocene\, divided between an uber-megalopolis and a “new national park of the world.” \nYoung will talk about his visionary thought experiment — and the questions it poses about the environment and our place in it — with Frances Anderton\, design reporter and curator\, and Benjamin Bratton\, founder of the design research program The Terraforming\, Professor of Visual Arts at UC San Diego\, and contributor to the Planet City book. \nA meet and greet with Young and Bratton will follow the talk. \nPlanet City was commissioned by the National Gallery of Victoria for the NGV Triennial. Catch Liam’s TEDMonterey Talk here.

SUMMARY:Art Walk & Roll Festival 2021 at Helms Bakery District
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 9th from 11 am to 6 pm\, Helms Bakery is excited to partner with the Culver City Arts District for their annual Culver City Art Walk and Roll Festival\, a self-guided tour and celebration of art\, culture\, mobility\, and our creative community. \nBegin at Helms Avenue where you and the kids will enjoy a “cardboard playground” created by our friends at reDiscover Center. Art and Design are at the core of our programming\, featuring artists Cynthia Alexandra\, Trine Churchill\, Stephanie Kerley Schwartz\, Yuliya Sigalova\, Textile Arts LA’s Tricksters & Transformations exhibition\, and a Biophilia poster competition installation from Poster Territory. \nThen stroll through the Arts District along Washington Boulevard to visit galleries\, enjoy live music\, grab a bite\, or stop at the mobility test area for e-bike\, scooter\, and board demos. \n\n \nCardboard Play \nJoin the crowd and build something great in reDiscover Center‘s Cardboard Playground on Helms Walk\, our pedestrian plaza on Helms Avenue. With piles of appliance boxes\, carpet tubes\, and rolls of fabric\, your imagination will go wild. Work with reDiscover’s Teaching Artists and our curated family-friendly cardboard tools to learn new construction techniques and make huge structures.\nHelms Walk\, 8800 Venice Boulevard\, Los Angeles\, CA 90034 \n\n \nArt + Nature \nCome celebrate art + nature during the opening of the International Biophilia Poster Exhibit\, exploring humanity’s relationship with the natural environment. 100 poster design finalists were selected from over 3500 global submissions. This exhibit is organized and sponsored by Brand Culture and PosterTerritory. www.biophilial.com\nWashington Corridor Gallery\, 8723 Washington Blvd. Culver City\, CA \n\n \nOn the Ropes \nOriginally conceived for the dream sequence of a theatrical play\, Stephanie Kerley-Schwartz continued the process of wrapping rope with silk fabric\, envisioning an evolving artwork that can be re-configured in multiple ways in any location. These same ropes have been stretched around boulders in a remote area of Yucca Valley and Stephanie has her eye on other locations — a fenced off-drainage ditch alongside the 10 freeway and a dry stream bed near Ojai. The ropes are making a quick stop at Helms Bakery’s Washington Corridor Gallery during Art Walk 2021.\nWashington Corridor Gallery\, 8723 Washington Blvd. Culver City\, CA \n\n \nAmazonia Delivered \nArtist Yuliya Sigalova’s Amazonia Delivered addresses the problem of deforestation and the excessive production of paper products used to maintain our lifestyles. Excess and careless waste\, exacerbated by skyrocketing product delivery during the pandemic\, contribute to the strain on our resources and animals. A structure built with Amazon boxes\, evoking an image of a tall rainforest tree stump\, with bark and roots made of void fill paper and other packing materials\, will include endangered species of animals and plants of the Amazon forest represented as cardboard and paper sculptures\, suggesting their metamorphosis into cardboard and an expression of the fragility of beauty and life traded for convenience.\nHelms Design Center\, 8745 Washington Blvd. Suite A\, Culver City\, CA \n\n \nArt + LA Family Housing \nPlease join Room & Board in support of LA Family Housing (LAFH) in an effort to help our homeless neighbors obtain permanent housing and a place to call home. When you purchase an artwork by the featured artist – this month is Trine Churchill – a 50% donation will be made on your behalf to continue the critical and life-saving services LAFH provides.\nRoom & Board\, 3231 Helms Avenue\, Los Angeles\, CA 90034 \n\n \nTricksters and Transformations \nTricksters & Transformation\, an exhibition in partnership with Textile Arts | Los Angeles\, is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate textiles and our community. Textiles have a universally demonstrated capacity for holding meaning\, establishing connections\, and creating healing. We’re delighted to invite you to share the work with us before the exhibit closes on Sunday\, October 10th. The exhibit runs concurrently with Artist in Residence Carmen Mardonéz.\nHelms Design Center\, 8745 Washington Blvd. Suite E\, Culver City \n\n \nPhotographic Alchemy \nPlease join us for ALCHEMY the first public exhibition of works from Los Angeles-based photographer\, Cynthia Alexandra. The presentation is informed by a definition of “Divine Alchemy” — “The art of transmutation\, the application of spiritual consciousness to physical form\, so profound that an entirely new form evolves. It is an irreversible change. A transformation that requires patience\, courage and a belief in the power of spirit above all else.” The exhibition features portraits of women who have transmuted challenges in their personal journey to empower others; they stand at various points of their own personal evolutions; some fully-formed\, others still in process\, but all firmly on the precipice of their next phase of embodiment.\nHelms Design Center\, 8745 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City

SUMMARY:Meditative Block Printing with Dusty Guerra
DESCRIPTION:Textile Arts | Los Angeles invites you to Meditative Block Printing with Dusty Guerra
\nSunday\, September 19th\, 10 am – 4 pm\, at the Helms Design Center \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn an alternative approach to relief printmaking utilizing a press-less printing method while discovering a repetitive process that will calm the mind and enrich a creative outlet. You will explore and develop your own motifs\, either from imagination or in reference to cultural narratives. Learn to work with alternative materials and techniques to design\, transfer\, carve\, register\, print\, and clean up. You will engage in a studio practice that will emphasize textile printing and pattern making. \nThere will be opportunity to explore and experiment as a way to develop a series of design networks. The motifs will first be test printed on cotton rag paper and once further developed\, the patterns may then be printed onto fabric (Participants are welcome to bring personal garments and pre-washed fabrics to be printed on). We will be using traditional printmaking inks and learn the basics of preparing ink and charging brayers for inking of the blocks — as well as how to efficiently clean up/conserve materials as a way to learn proper printmaking etiquette. \nDusty Guerra is a Xicano artist\, printmaker\, and educator based in Southern California. As a first generation artist\, Guerra explores family heritage and traditions to further investigate the origins of his Mexicanidad. Guerra’s art practice is managing the creation of a non-verbal\, spiritual language of symbols and motifs rooted in native belief systems and histories of migration. He holds a BFA in Traditional Printmaking and has been teaching printmaking to underserved communities in Los Angeles for the past 6 years. \nMORE INFO \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Crafting Bokjumeoni
DESCRIPTION:WE ARE SO SORRY! SADLY\, THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED AND WE HOPE TO RESCHEDULE IN THE FUTURE. \nTextile Arts | Los Angeles invites you to Crafting Bokjumeoni \nSaturday\, September 11th\, 2 – 4 pm at the Helms Design Center \nYou may have wondered about the small\, colorful bags you see in museums\, and carried by ladies wearing hanbok\, a traditional Korean garment. The bags are called bokjumeoni (복주머니)\, translated as a lucky pouch. \nHanbok is a colorful and elegant type of Korean formal clothing worn for special occasions. It is beautiful\, but lacks pockets\, which led to the creation of bokjumeoni\, a drawstring pouch. Bokjumeoni are made of the same material and colors as hanbok\, and they are believed to bring the holder good fortune. Today\, bokjumeoni are often used as a bag for small presents given to friends and loved ones. \nIn this workshop Dong Kyu will teach participants how to make their own bokjumeoni. We will provide all the necessary materials\, including colorful fabric pre-cut in the shape of the pouch. Participants will learn about the history of the bokjumeoni and its use in Korea from the past until the present day. Students will sew the pieces of fabric together to create a small drawstring pouch. \nNo experience is necessary\, although participants should be comfortable handling a needle and thread. \nClass fee $45 includes all materials. \nMORE INFO

SUMMARY:Reading Materials\, A Book Club Hosted by Textile Arts
DESCRIPTION:Textile Arts | Los Angeles invites you to join READING MATERIALS\, a book club with an art and material focus. We will be reading books about the artist’s life\, about ways of seeing and reasons for making\, and about our inextricable relationship with material. The titles and conversations should appeal to all creatives\, regardless of medium. Offered in partnership with Studio203\, an art gallery / creative space in Mar Vista\, they will gather on Tuesdays at 7pm. Admission free for members; $40 for the public (for the year). Please consider purchasing your books from Arcana: Books on the Arts in Culver City\, or your favorite local indie shop\, or bookshop.org \nOn Tuesday August 17th from  7:00 – 8:30pm the book selection is CRAFT: AN AMERICAN HISTORY by Glen Adamson\nA groundbreaking and endlessly surprising history of how artisans created America\, from the nation’s origins to the present day. \nJOIN THE CLUB! \nAt the center of the United States’ economic and social development\, according to conventional wisdom\, are industry and technology-while craftspeople and handmade objects are relegated to a bygone past. Renowned historian Glenn Adamson turns that narrative on its head in this innovative account\, revealing makers’ central role in shaping America’s identity. Examine any phase of the nation’s struggle to define itself\, and artisans are there-from the silversmith Paul Revere and the revolutionary carpenters and blacksmiths who hurled tea into Boston Harbor\, to today’s “maker movement.” From Mother Jones to Rosie the Riveter. From Betsy Ross to Rosa Parks. From suffrage banners to the AIDS Quilt.

SUMMARY:Studio Tour with Artist Ann B. Coddington
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 14th at 12 noon\, please join Textile Arts Los Angeles for a fascinating look into artist Ann B. Coddington‘s practice and studio. \n$10 public / Free for members \nARTIST STATEMENT\nMy artwork borrows the technique twining from the traditional craft of basketry to create a sculptural expression of my beliefs and experiences and how they are sensed by the body. I am intrigued by the process of and differences between feeling and knowing; body and mind. Ineffable memories held by the body are more potent\, penetrating and enduring than those in the mind. My forms are actuated by this somatic memory in conjunction with an investigation of the dichotomies: eternal and ephemeral\, strength and fragility\, masculine and feminine\, free and captive\, old and young\, living and dead. \nAs the world becomes increasingly technological\, my work moves in the opposite direction to the point where now I tie two pieces of string together\, bend some sticks\, form plaster in my hands\, and mold clay. Reducing art-making down to the most elemental means of expression\, the simplest creative task challenges and satisfies me. Much of my current artwork pushes back against the world of increasingly complex technologies that\, paradoxically\, in an effort to connect us\, instead separates and isolates us\, removing us from authentic experience. The slow building of one stitch upon another exists within an ancient time frame\, virtually un-experienced in the contemporary\, digital society. My art is my voice\, more than my words and in my work\, feeling overshadows knowing.

SUMMARY:Textile Arts LA Presents practiceLAB with Nathalie Miebach
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, May 5th from 5:00 to 6:30 PM\, join Textile Arts Los Angeles for the next iteration of practiceLAB with Nathalie Miebach -artist\, environmental commentator\, educator\, collaborator\, woman of many hats! \npracticeLAB is a series of conversations exploring the nature of practice. We invite artists\, curators\, designers\, authors\, and creatives to present their work\, their relationship to the work\, and sometimes to engage our hands in small acts of creativity\, too. \nTickets: members $8 / public $14 / students/concessions $6 \nABOUT NATHALIE\nMy work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines\, I translate scientific data related to ecology\, climate change and meteorology into three-dimensional structures. My method of translation is principally that of weaving – in particular basket weaving – as it provides me with a simple yet highly effective grid through which to interpret data in three-dimensional space. Central to this work is my desire to explore the role visual aesthetics play in the translation and understanding of scientific information. By utilizing artistic processes and everyday materials\, I am questioning and expanding the traditional boundaries through which science data has been visually translated (ex: graphs\, diagrams)\, while at the same time provoking expectations of what kind of visual vocabulary is considered to be in the domain of ‘science’ or ‘art’.

SUMMARY:Studio Tour with Artist Lesley Kice Nishigawara
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, 4/30 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM\, please join Textile Art Los Angeles for a studio tour with artist\, educator\, weaver\, and keen observer Lesley Kice Nishigawara. \nARTIST STATEMENT\nMy work explores the world around us with a system of visual examination. The grid frames my work in both a conceptual and practical manner. Conceptually\, the grid reflects a need for regulation and perfection; a method or system of organization. With the aim for exacting and ordered spaces\, slippages in the grid appear within varied applications and renditions. Explorations into these concepts present misalignments that occur within a desire for order. Through various translations including reflections and shadows\, each articulation is created following a system of self-imposed rules to shift into new forms\, images\, and ideas. Practically\, it creates a structure for my ideas to unfold. \nThe work takes on multiple formal configurations to probe these ideas. Large-scale tiled textile works produce a soft and elegant interpretation of misaligned urban patterns. Layered drawings create space to activate the work through shadows and perspectival shifts. Throughout the work\, the complexity of order and structure is exposed through these iterations. \nTranslating the grid and patterns that appear through human intervention in our built environment produces an expanded view of the world. Highlighting and refiguring the nuanced visual elements—from the regularity of a chain link fence to a shadow projected from an overpass—this work is developed through a series of iterative examinations that develop beyond their original form and meaning. It acknowledges that the simple is often more complex as it is explored; the perfect is often more imperfect than at first glance. It exposes that the limits of perfection have endless possibilities. \nTickets: $10 public / Free for members

Their intimate knowledge of Boston\, where the sisters were born and raised\, allows the close practice to be both deeply engaged and work critically with local issues of housing\, public space\, history and identity. French 2D works on housing and mixed-use projects with a focus on strange housing types that combine familiar ideas of home with radical organizations and typologies\, found in their cohousing and micro-housing projects. The practice also works on civic installations and exhibitions that call upon the domestic to bring people together for familiar rituals in unfamiliar spaces\, found in serial dinner-parties\, fuzzy bartering environments\, and out-scaled dresses. \nJenny and Anda’s interest in hybrid models that exist between practice and academia has been the catalyst for their practice-based research and advocacy. Jenny is an Assistant Professor in Practice at the Harvard GSD and Anda serves on the Board of Directors for the Boston Society of Architects\, where the pair organized the recent Now Practice Now series\, exploring emerging modes of practice. \nFrench 2D was named as an Architectural Record Magazine Design Vanguard winner in 2019. The firm has been featured in Domus\, Metropolis\, The Architect’s Newspaper\, and as Architect Magazine’s Next Progressives. French 2D was a 2013 MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program finalist and exhibited at the US Pavilion of the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale. \ncalpolylametro.com \nPhoto: Anda French and Jenny French / Photograph by Steph Larsen \n

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Textile Arts Hosts a Conversation + Book Signing\, Material and Mind with Christopher Bardt
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO AN UNDETERMINED FUTURE DATE.\nOn Wednesday\, March 25th from 7:30 to 9:00 pm (Doors at 7:00 pm)\, please join us in welcoming Textile Arts Los Angeles and Christopher Bardt\, AIA for practiceLAB\, a conversation and in-depth exploration of the interaction between mind and material world\, mediated by language\, image\, and making—in design\, the arts\, culture\, and science. \nIn Material and Mind\, Christopher Bardt delves deeply into the interaction of mind and material world\, mediated by language\, image\, and the process of making. He examines thought not as something “pure” and autonomous but as emerging from working with material\, and he identifies this as the source of imagination and creative insight. This takes place as much in such disciplines as cognitive science\, anthropology\, and poetry as it does in the more obvious painting\, sculpture\, and design. In some fields\, the medium of work is\, in fact\, the very medium of thinking—as fabric is for the tailor. \nDrawing on the philosophical notions of the “extended mind” and the “enactive mind\,” and looking beyond the world of material-based arts\, Bardt investigates the realms in which material and mind interweave through metaphor\, representation\, projection\, analogues\, tools\, and models. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nChristopher Bardt has over 25 years of experience as an architect and professor of architecture at RISD. He is a founding principal of 3sixØ Architecture\, which Architectural Record named one of 10 leading vanguard firms worldwide in 2002. His extensive professional experience includes furniture design\, residential\, commercial and institutional commissions and planning studies\, ranging from small urban interventions to large-scale metropolitan development. Bardt has been a member of the Architecture faculty at RISD since 1988. He has been a visiting professor at Cornell University\, the National Academy of Design and Art\, Slovakia and the China Academy of Art and has served on the Board of Governors of the RISD Museum. Bardt holds a BArch from RISD and a MArch from Harvard University. \nFOR MORE INFO + TICKETS

SUMMARY:practiceLAB: Textile Arts Explores Meaningful Art Practices
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, January 29th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm\, please join us for Mindful and Meaningful: Exploring the Synergies Between Textile Waste and Fine Art Practice\, Textile Arts LA‘s inaugural session of practiceLAB\, featuring talks from artists\, architects\, designers\, and creatives. \nIn this session\, we are treated to a discussion of how artists and designers can work together to create a more sustainable future. Three Los Angeles based artists share their diverse practices and individual experiences\, creating responsible objects that honor the past and endure in the future. \nIf you attended the October Textile Slam you were treated to a sneak preview of this talk. We’re thrilled to invite the trio back for a longer form discussion of this critical topic: questions of sustainability\, reuse\, and upcycling are necessary considerations. Please join this lively presentation and discussion showcasing how three artists are responding. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \n \nRenae Barnard is a multi-disciplinary artist interested in exploring the network of interactions between environment\, perception\, and well-being. Using found materials and waste from the furniture manufacturing industry\, Barnard received her Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University and her BA from California State University\, Los Angeles. Barnard has recently completed projects in cooperation with the National Immigration Law Center and the City of Santa Monica Department of Cultural Affairs. She is a recipient of the Sue Arlen Walker and Harvey M. Parker Memorial Fellowship\, the Armory Center for the Arts Teaching Artist Fellowship\, The Ahmanson Annual Fellowship\, Lincoln Fellowship Award\, and Christopher Street West Art and Culture Grant. \n \nChuck Hohng is a Korean American artist\, born in Long Beach California. Chuck spent fourteen years of his early life in his family’s native South Korea. He received his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Art Center College of Design. His early childhood exposure to Catholic practice and a bicultural household furthered interests in vanitas\, identities\, symbols\, and rituals. Chuck makes a range of fiber artworks from teddy bears to haute couture hanbok. Exploring salvaged textiles connections to love and loss\, Chuck’s artworks give a physical body to intellectual and emotional experiences. He believes we can always grow out of the mud\, lift ourselves above the murky water and bloom. \n \nAneesa Shami received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in both Fiber and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute. Aneesa’s work speaks to a broader understanding that we are all fundamentally human. She tries to utilize universal themes that are inclusive\, referencing the sublime\, and an otherworldly sense of the human conscious and subconscious. A love for repetitive mark-making drives her practice. Multiple strands of yarn\, strips of felt\, and even pen strokes build depth and density in each piece. Layers of material and process combine to lend the impression that there is more than what the eye sees. She recently completed a residency at the Helms Design Center\, is currently researching textile and fiber history and is completing large sculptural pieces in her current body of work\, Syndication.
