SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Magdalena Wosinska + Special Guest Tobin Yelland
DESCRIPTION:Free \n\nJoin Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, April 13th\, between 4:00 and 6:00 PM to celebrate the publication of the Magdalena Wosinska’s amazing survey of her skateboarding photographs\, Fulfill The Dream. In addition to signing the first copies in the States of this hot-off-the-press import\, Ms. Wosinska will be engaging in a discussion with renowned cinematographer and photographer Tobin Yelland comparing their shared yet very different experiences in the heady world of the skate culture of the 1990s and beyond. \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at the shop\, please place your order here! \nWe look forward to seeing you! \n\n“Fulfill the Dream is a documentary photobook by Polish-born\, Los Angeles-based photographer Magdalena Wosinska that captures the American skate culture of the 1990s through color and black-and-white snapshots. The scene’s energy\, creativity\, and rebellious spirit influenced fashion\, music\, and artistic expression\, shaping a generation of American underground youth. The book features Chad Muska\, Austyn Gillette\, Jim Greco\, Harold Hunter\, Ed Templeton\, Eric Ellington\, Ali Boulala\, and numerous other influential skaters. Beyond the book’s broader examination of American skate subculture\, Wosinska’s project is a deeply personal journey through her teenage years and an exploration of what it means to be a misfit in a world of misfits. Her visual diary captures the duality that has shaped her life: the joy and exhilaration of skateboarding alongside meaningful human connection and the adrenaline-fueled world of drugs\, a first love\, prejudice\, a deep need to find a place of belonging and struggles with mental health. Shortly after immigrating to the U.S. from communist Poland in 1991\, Wosinska’s coping mechanism for culture shock was her camera. It became her passport to a world ruled by boys\, and a language for fitting in and forming heartfelt friendships in the skate community. Through raw\, visceral portraits and self-portraits created in juxtaposition to the male-dominated scene\, she captured the now-famous teen spirit of the ‘90s\, reflecting the ever-shifting balance between the highs and lows of belonging and the essence of years of making dreams come true as a skate photographer through perseverance\, diligence\, and hard work. Alongside the teenage angst of the era\, the project explores themes of resilience\, female empowerment\, and the relentless pursuit of goals.”

SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Dawoud Bey for Elegy
DESCRIPTION:Free \nOn Saturday\, March 2nd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing with Dawoud Bey to celebrate the publication of Elegy \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at Arcana\, please place your order here. \n\nRenowned for his Harlem street scenes and expressive portraits\, Dawoud Bey continues his ongoing series on African American history focusing on the landscape to create a portrait of the early African American presence in the United States. Elegy brings together Bey’s three landscape series to date – “Night Coming Tenderly\, Black (2017)”\, “In This Here Place (2021)”\, and “Stoney the Road (2023)” – elucidating the deep historical memory still embedded in the geography of the United States. Bey takes viewers to the historic Richmond Slave Trail in Virginia\, where Africans were marched onto auction blocks; to the plantations of Louisiana\, where they labored; and along the last stages of the Underground Railroad in Ohio\, where fugitives sought self-emancipation. Essays by the exhibition’s curator\, Valerie Cassel Oliver\, and scholars LeRonn P. Brooks\, Imani Perry\, and Christina Sharpe illuminate the work. By interweaving these bodies of work into an elegy in three movements\, Bey doesn’t merely evoke history\, he retells it through historically grounded images that challenge viewers to go beyond seeing and imagine lived experiences. \nA brand new example additionally SIGNED by photographer Dawoud Bey. \n\nCover Image: Untitled (James River) from the series Stony the Road\, 2023\, Dawoud Bey (American\, born 1953)\, gelatin silver print. SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing with Yelena Yemchuk for Malanka
DESCRIPTION:Free \nOn Saturday\, February 17th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing with Yelena Yemchuk to celebrate the publication of Malanka. \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at Arcana\, please place your order here. \n\n“Ukrainian-born\, Brooklyn-based photographer and painter Yelena Yemchuk is most commonly known for her fashion and portrait photographs\, which have appeared in Italian and Japanese Vogue\, V\, the New Yorker and The New York Times. Yemchuk makes images that teeter on the threshold between her Eastern European heritage and her daily life in New York; between fiction and reality; between the grand beauty of 1960s cinema and the social and built environments of post-Soviet realms. As with all of her work\, Malanka is a personal\, feminine\, surrealist and magical project. The eponymous tradition is a pre-Christian folklore ritual driving out winter and welcoming spring\, an ancient custom reminiscent of Persephone’s return in Greek mythology. It is celebrated on January 14th\, the old New Year in the Julian calendar\, by ethnic Romanians in western Ukraine. In 2019 and 2020\, Yemchuk traveled to Crasna (Krasnoilsk in Ukrainian) to document the night-long festival. Accompanying Yemchuk’s striking photographic documentation is a poetic essay by Romanian cultural journalist Ioana Pelehatai.”

SUMMARY:Arcana Book Signing + Discussion for WINOGRAND COLOR
DESCRIPTION:Free \nOn Saturday\, February 3rd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a discussion about the fabulous new Twin Palms book WINOGRAND COLOR with the book’s editor Michael Almereyda and Geoff Dyer. The discussion will begin at 4:15 followed by a book signing with Mr. Almereyda. \nIf you can’t make it\, you can order a copy of WINOGRAND COLOR signed by Michael Almereyda here. \nGarry Winogrand is known primarily for his spontaneous and energetic street photography in black-and-white. What is lesser known is that Winogrand also shot more than 45\,000 color slides between the early 1950s and late 1960s. These photographs were often taken between assignments\, when the photographer\, working on his own\, developed and refined an approach to his medium that was increasingly open\, independent\, and radical. He routinely photographed with two cameras strapped around his neck\, one loaded with color film\, the other with black and white. \n“Winogrand Color” presents one hundred and fifty photographs selected from the archives at the Center for Creative Photography by the American film director\, Michael Almereyda and former Museum of Modern Art curator\, Susan Kismaric. It is the first monograph dedicated to the artist’s rarely seen color work.

SUMMARY:Helms Studio Series
DESCRIPTION:Helms Bakery District presents Helms Studio Series inside the Washington Corridor Gallery\, where the artistry of five individuals converge to offer a captivating experience during the Culver City Art Walk & Roll Festival.\nChris Hero\, a versatile Los Angeles-based painter\, channels two decades of life drawing at Studio II onto salvaged paper\, crafting spontaneous and intuitive masterpieces in acrylics\, inks\, and gouache\, often completed in under half an hour during life-drawing sessions. Meanwhile\, artist David Valvoda captures unique perspectives of the everyday world through photography\, weaving disparate images into captivating compositions. \nKate Leachman explores memory and emotion through oil paintings on canvas and wood\, reimagining personal photos and nature in vibrant colors. Their smaller\, instinctive creations\, known as “Musings\,” provide a delightful escape into the joy of the creative process. Stephanie Kerley Schwartz\, a Los Angeles-based set and costume designer\, combines theater and art in the ongoing project Hypothetical Scenarios\, celebrating the tactile experience of creating with found materials. Finally\, Toby Pederson\, with an illustrious 20-year career as a commercial photographer\, skillfully illuminates the overlooked and mundane\, revealing the beauty in simplicity. \nHelms Studio Series is your invitation to explore these unique artistic journeys and witness the world through their creative lenses. \nFree \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nChris Hero\nHelms Studio Series presents Chris Hero\, a versatile Los Angeles-based painter with a unique journey through various professions. His current work\, born from two decades of life drawing at Studio II\, involves layering history and surface on salvaged paper. Hero’s spontaneous\, intuitive art uses acrylics\, inks\, and gouache\, with most pieces completed in under half an hour during sessions with life-drawing models. \n\n \n \n	\n \n \nStephanie Kerley Schwartz\nHelms Studio Series presents Hypothetical Scenarios\, works created by Stephanie Kerley Schwartz\, an Los Angeles based set and costume designer working with theaters\, installation artists and painters. Her design work has been seen on stages across Southern California as well as in Portland\, Oregon and Ford’s Theatre in Washington\, DC. \nHypothetical Scenarios is an ongoing project that combines Stephanie’s theater and art practice\, along with her passion for creating interactive environments with found and collected materials. Expanding the relationship between objects and materials fascinates her — exploring the tactile experience of making things\, and the transposed feelings that arise from the combinations. By juxtaposing materials such as raw rope and refined colorful silk\, or discarded rusty metal and precious gold leaf\, her work chases beauty using tactile craft\, finding meaning in the juxtaposition of objects and materials that pass through her hands\, relieving them from the duty of practicality. \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nKate Leachman\nHelms Studio Series presents Kate Leachman\, a native of Los Angeles\, currently working in Studio II\, Culver City. Kate’s current work centers around people\, places and objects integral to her life. Paintings in oil on canvas or wood are inspired by memories. Resourcing personal photos\, nature and imagination\, she recreates her memory of the subject in vibrant color. Kate’s artistic practice also includes making small mixed media works. Constructed on a variety of paper\, canvas or board\, she explores combinations of wet and dry media. These are instinctive creations she calls “Musings.” A daily practice\, working on the Musings is a liberation from the inherent problem-solving that comes with large paintings and allows Kate to relax into the pure joy of the creative process. \n\n \n \n	\n \n \nToby Pederson\nA graduate of Art Center College of Design\, Toby Pederson\, boasts an impressive 20-year career as a commercial photographer. His collaborative and skilled approach has graced major advertising campaigns\, showcasing his refined style rich in subtlety and detail\, particularly emphasizing lighting. Beyond commercial work\, Toby’s personal still-life photography delves into the often overlooked or mundane\, contrasting with today’s flashy tech-driven world. Armed with extensive photography expertise\, he skillfully highlights and captures simple subjects like construction materials\, insects\, paint\, or even a humble bubble in water. \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n \nDavid Valvoda\nDavid Valvoda is a local photographer and artist who hails originally from Cleveland\, OH. David’s photography focuses on the world around us as seen through unique perspectives\, often seeing the dramatic geometry in our everyday surroundings as well as putting disparate images together to create a unique image.

SUMMARY:David Hartwell | Circle of Confusion
DESCRIPTION:Helms Bakery District Presents Photography by David Hartwell\nIn the Helms Design Center\n \nOpening reception and presentation during Culver City Art Walk and Roll Festival. \nExhibition Dates:\nOctober 14th\, presentation 3:00 – 3:45 pm followed by reception.\nOctober 14th – November 17th by appointment \nIn photography\, the circle of confusion determines the depth of field\, the part of an image that is acceptably sharp. Artist photographer David Hartwell sets his sights and lenses on the myriad of plants and flowers that inhabit his garden in Pasadena. David’s art and craft consists of taking hundreds of photographs of each specimen. Inching himself closer to his subject a fraction of a millimeter at a time\, David ends up with images only differentiated by the location of their razor thin focus point\, the circle of confusion. With the aid of AI and a lot of manual post production David reassembles those photos into images that are impossibly sharp\, blurring the boundaries of illustration\, photography and the stored visual memory. This circumvention of the limitations of the lens –the human eye having the same constraints –allows David to physically emulate what the human brain does: synthesize information into a coherent whole. The images are conspicuously simple and familiar yet the resulting amalgams have never been seen by a photographic lens\, nor the human eye. \nDavid Hartwell is a British citizen. He was born and raised in Switzerland where he studied photography and obtained his BFA from Art Center College of Design’s European campus (1991) He is also an accomplished animator\, CG artist and color grader. His work has shown at the Palm Springs Art Museum\, WUHO Gallery in Hollywood\, the Wende Museum of the Cold War\, National Gallery of the Cayman Islands\, National Museum of China in Beijing\, 798 Arts District Beijing\, EPFL University Gallery in Lausanne Switzerland. \nHartwell will present his most recent work which blurs the boundaries of photography\, illustration and the stored visual memory. He will give a presentation about his work and process from 3:00 to 3:45 pm October 14th followed by a reception. \ndouble-bang.com\ninstagram.com/hightechfolkart\nhartwelldavid.com \nFree

He created the artwork for Close to the Edge: The Birth of Hip-Hop Architecture\, the dynamic exhibition co-presented by Helms Bakery District\, SoCal NOMA and A+D Museum about the elements of hip-hop – emceeing\, b-boying\, and graffiti – and their influence on design and architecture. \nNow it’s time to hear from Prime. \nPlease join us on Friday\, September 15\, when Prime will sit down with celebrated muralist Man One\, in a conversation moderated by Scott “Sourdough” Power\, creator and publisher of indie arts media website NotRealArt.com. \nPrime and Man One will talk about the birth of graffiti in LA and the influence of East Coast hip-hop; and they will share stories about wild childhoods painting the walls of LA\, to what it means to be established artists navigating a world in which street art is a commodity. \nJointly presented by Helms Bakery District\, SoCal NOMA and A+D Museum\, as a part of the Close to the Edge: The Birth of Hip-Hop Architecture exhibition. \nAmbiance: DJ Caviar \nComplimentary valet parking available! \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n RSVP HERE\n \n \n \n	\n \n \n  \n\nAbout Prime \nJose “Prime” Reza is an American graffiti artist born and raised in the Pico-Union District of Downtown Los Angeles. Prime is credited with being a founding father of Los Angeles stylized graffiti lettering\, a hybrid of Cholo lettering and East Coast style graffiti that is often bold\, aggressive\, and monochromatic. \nPrime is considered one of the most influential artists in the history of Los Angeles public wall writing\, combining “traditional east coast painting techniques with geometric gangster-style blocks\,” according to the curators of the book and exhibition Art in the Streets. His work has been exhibited in many shows including Art in the Streets\, L.A.
