SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Eames Demetrios for Storytelling + Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, March 3rd from 4 to 6pm\, artist\, writer\, and geographer-at-large Eames Demetrios joins Arcana: Books on the Arts for an intimate storytelling experience and exclusive first book signing of his most recent limited edition publication Kcymaerxthaere: The Story so Far…(Folio 1). \nThe two-volume set highlights the first 138 installations that exist in Kcymaerxthaere (Ky-MAIR-icks-THEER)\, the parallel world started by Demetrios in 2003. Through imagery\, text\, and artwork the publication offers an analog way to experience the global art project and serves as a tool to share this endeavor with the global community that makes the project possible. Sales of the publication will fund its translation into the 23 languages that appear in the installations. \nKcymaerxthaere tells the stories of a parallel world through books\, performances\, Internet\, embroideries\, guided collaborations\, but perhaps most distinctively through installations—especially physical markers (usually in stone\, concrete\, or bronze) and far more elaborate historical sites\, which can be up to an acre in size\, that honor the parallel world in our linear world. \nOne can think of Kcymaerxthaere as an illuminated manuscript where every page is in a different location. Come explore this rich parallel world and see how the stories connect and extend! \nAll welcome. RSVP encouraged.

SUMMARY:A Special Discussion with Alec Byrne and Hugh Brown at Arcana Books this Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Sunday\, December 17th between 4 and 6 pm\, join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a very special discussion between Alec Byrne and Grammy award-winning art director\, designer\, and artist Hugh Brown followed by a book signing. \nIn addition to the spectacular boxed Insight Editions London Rock – The Unseen Archive\, Arcana will have copies of the special überEditions “Signature Editions” – each limited to twenty-five copies only with one of five matted silver gelatin photographic prints of Byrne’s iconic images of the halcyon days of Rock. \nPhotographer Alec Byrne covered the British rock and roll scene from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s – the height of the rock revolution. Legendary performers such as The Rolling Stones\, The Beatles\, The Who\, The Jimi Hendrix Experience\, Bob Dylan\, Led Zeppelin\, The Yardbirds\, Bob Marley\, T. Rex\, The Doors\, The Faces\, The Hollies\, and David Bowie passed through Swinging London and provided provocative fodder for the prolific young lensman. Byrne’s resulting archive of rock-and-roll photos disappeared out of sight and into storage for close to four decades before being reintroduced to the world in late 2012 with an acclaimed one-night show in Los Angeles attended by more than one thousand people. Since then\, the work has been featured during the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony and acquired by London’s National Portrait Gallery. Through rare live performance images\, intimate portraits\, and candid captures of the scene\, Alec Byrne: The Unseen Archive – the photographer’s first feature-length book – brings the era into stunning focus\, painting an evocative picture of an inimitable time and place.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts a Discussion + Book Signing with Gloria Katz\, Willard Huyck & Manfred Heiting
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, December 16th between 4 and 6 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a discussion with Gloria Katz\, Willard Huyck and Manfred Heiting\, celebrating their two significant new books from Steidl. \nVIEWS OF JAPAN FROM THE GLORIA KATZ & WILLARD HUYCK COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS: Most collectors have their own unique attractions and approaches to the objects of their collecting. This exquisitely produced volume features the adventures of Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck – two renowned filmmakers who began collecting Japanese photography more than a decade ago – whose ongoing hunt seems indeed like a Hollywood movie. A memoir about their love of Japanese photography and their experiences collecting it\, Views of Japan makes available a selection of rare masterpieces from their extensive collection along with a personal “script” recounting how they scouted\, debated\, selected\, and ultimately acquired many of the works. This was no small undertaking considering the rarity of some of the images\, particularly those taken before the 1970s. Since 2002\, they have assembled an encyclopedic collection of images from the 19th Century to the present\, including key works by Nobuyoshi Araki\, Hiroshi Hamaya\, Eikoh Hosoe\, Miyako Ishiuchi\, Kikuji Kawada\, Daido Moriyama\, Ikko Narahara\, Issei Suda\, Shomei Tomatsu\, and Shoji Ueda. \nTheir collection was shaped into Views of Japan by photographic historian Manfred Heiting\, the designer and editor of extensive surveys of German\, Soviet\, and Japanese photobooks. The resulting volume is a distinctly personal presentation of one of the greatest private holdings of Japanese photography in the world\, and an accessible look at a practice long ignored by Western histories. \nTHE JAPANESE PHOTOBOOK 1912-1990: Edited by Manfred Heiting – who has also designed and edited extensive surveys of German and Soviet photobooks\, “The Japanese Photobook 1912-1990” illustrates the development of photography in twentieth Century as seen in the photo publications of Japan. Documenting successively the early Modernist influences of European and American Pictorialism\, the German Bauhaus and Imperial military propaganda\, to the complete collapse and destruction of the country in 1945\, it then records a new beginning with the unique self-determination of a young generation of Post-War photographers and visual artists highlighted by the “Provoke” style\, as well as protest and war documentation of the late 1950s to the early ’70s – the signature “Japanese photobook” – as we have come to know it. \nThis massive\, authoritative\, and highly visual undertaking presents an essay by Ryuichi Kaneko – the leading historian of Japanese photobooks\, contributions from Heiting\, Fujimura Satomi\, Duncan Forbes\, Mitsuda Yuri\, Iizawa Kotaro\, Shirayama Mari\, and Matthew S. Witkovsky\, and detailed information and illustrations of over four hundred photographically-illustrated publications. It is the most extensive English-language survey of Japanese photobooks of this period\, and a crucial step in making the history of Japanese photography – long-neglected by the Western canon – accessible to the English-speaking world. \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Senon Williams for a Book Launch + Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 7 from 4 to 6 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a special Book Launch and Exhibition of Senon Williams’ Hunted & Gathered. \nNative to Los Angeles\, Senon Williams is a lifelong visual artist and musician. Williams’ work finds space in the natural\, exposing outstanding and devastating stages of human evolution. “To provoke thought\, a question works better than answers.  I enjoy to start a story I resolve in different ways depending on my mood\,” says Williams.  With imagery ranging from stark silhouettes to lush landscapes and human forms staged in undetermined acts of hope\, his pairing of words and imagery suggest deeper meaning. A poignant visualization of the inherent human struggle both ancient and contemporary. \nHamilton Press was established in 1990 by master printmaker Ed Hamilton and artist Ed Ruscha to encourage artists to produce art in a peaceful\, unhurried atmosphere. Steeped in traditional book making in a modern age\, the publication itself is a fine object created by an esteemed team. Designed by Lorraine Wild and Marina Mills Kitchen of Green Dragon Office\, Los Angeles\, color separations by Echelon Color\, Santa Monica and printed by Dr.Cantz’sche Druckerei Median GmbH\, Ostfildern\, Germany.  The first edition consists of 750 bound copies. SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Tabitha Soren for a Talk + Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, April 29th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in celebrating the publication of Tabitha Soren’s thought-provoking monograph FANTASY LIFE : BASEBALL AND THE AMERICAN DREAM. A talk and presentation by the photographer will begin at 4:30. \nIn 2002\, Tabitha Soren first began photographing a group of twenty-one minor league draft picks for the Oakland A’s – young men coming into the major league farm system straight from high school or college. For the past fifteen years\, she has followed these players through their baseball lives spending time on farm teams waiting to get called up to The Show\, with frequent trades\, big breaks\, broken hearts\, day jobs\, long bus trips\, injuries\, waiting around\, calling plays from the dugout\, gum and tobacco chewing\, praying\, bonding\, and aging. It turns out\, getting drafted isn’t the same as making the team\, making the team isn’t the same as playing\, playing isn’t the same thing as a star turn or a star’s paycheck\, and getting paid isn’t the same as having a secure future for when you retire in your early thirties. \nThis project examines meritocracy’s myths and the precariousness of a person’s fate when it hangs by the thread of perpetual self-perfection. In Fantasy Life’s case\, it is professional baseball players who are in that position. But that feeling is not limited to athletes in America. The United States is a striving culture unlike any other. Some of the subjects\, like Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton\, have gone on to become well-known\, respected players at the highest level of the game. Some left baseball to pursue other lines of work such as selling insurance\, and coal mining. Others have struggled with poverty and even homelessness. \nFantasy Life portrays a selection of these decade-plus stories\, gathering together a richly textured series of photographs taken on the field and behind the scenes at games\, along with commentaries by each of the players and memorabilia from their lives from kindergarten-age baseball cards to x-rays of career injuries. It includes a five part short story by noted author Dave Eggers about a fictional minor leaguer that compellingly condenses the roller-coaster ride of the farm team everyman\, from youthful pursuit of stardom through the slog of endless hardscrabble games\, to that moment of realization that success may not be just around the corner after all. Additionally\, ten players from the project have contributed essays for the book about their experiences with success and failure – and how they had to piece together a new identity after their professional sports careers.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Celebration for Photographer Lenard Smith
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, April 15th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they welcome their friend Lenard Smith to celebrate his lovely new limited edition\, nearly-sold-out survey of recent work: A Sort Of Looking. \nSmith’s first publication presents a selection of seductive images from the past five years of work that draw lines connecting the artist’s hand and chance. The formal compositions of his still lifes bring attention to the banal object form; tissue paper\, flower\, and in between the exploration of sculptural arrangements. Smith’s portrait work commands attention – bringing the viewer up close up to his subjects – whether they are photographed in the studio or quickly on the streets. These powerful portraits act as a metronome throughout the entire book\, grounding the audience. The title reveals the artist’s engagement with institutional critique\, and plays with the discourse that is commonly used in art conversations. A Sort of Looking is in fact Lenard Smith’s own looking\, and not a “sort of”\, but exactly how he is able to view the world in front of his lens just as he sees it.\n     \n  \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Special Workshop With Christina Kim
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 8th at 11:30AM\, please join us at Arcana: Books on the Arts for a special workshop with Christina Kim to learn to make yo-yo puffs! \nA yo-yo puff is a circle of fabric gathered around its edges into a “puff” used for embellishing quilts and clothing. First\, a circle is drawn on a piece of cloth\, cut out\, and stitched with thread around the outside of the folded edge while turning a tiny hem as you go. The thread is pulled\, gathering the fabric into a puff\, then knotted. A traditional form of recycling thought to date back centuries\, yo-yo or Suffolk puffs\, as they are sometimes called in England\, are best known in the United States for their use in Depression-era quilting practice. \nChristina attempted her first yo-yo puffs creation\, a coverlet\, in high school by following instructions in an issue of Seventeen magazine. For a project in 2013 evoking the transformation of winter to spring\, 10\,000 puffs dip-dyed and hand-painted in subtle gradients of sky\, snow\, and cherry blossom colors were made for an 18 window installation in Tokyo. SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts A Book Signing With Marc Appleton & Melba Levick
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Sunday\, December 18th from 4 to 6 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing  and celebration of Ranches: Home on the Range in California with author Marc Appleton and photographer Melba Levick. \nThe lure of the West has been strong in American history\, representing the promise of beautiful\, wild landscapes\, broad vistas\, clean air\, and bright skies. On this magnificent land are the romantic and intriguing homes set in the idyllic landscapes of the great California ranches. From the one hundred and fifty year-old Rancho Camulos of “Ramona” fame to Jack London’s Beauty Ranch on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain to the working ranches of today\, Ranches: Home on the Range in California presents an expression of a lifestyle steeped in self-sufficiency\, love of the land\, and lack of pretense. Arising from the tradition of the Mexican land-grant ranchos and the spread of Spanish Catholic missions\, the ranches of California have a long and multifaceted history which is examined by author Marc Appleton – who himself can attest to the challenges and charms of ranch life. Located in dramatic landscapes of rolling hills\, upon the sides of mountains\, or in vast plains bordered by snow-capped mountains\, the featured homes are exquisitely captured by renowned architectural photographer Melba Levick. At once a tribute to a historic form and a fading way of life\, as well as a celebration of renewal\, architectural beauty\, and the romance of the West\, this beautiful and authoritative book offers the reader an immersive experience of living on the land.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Special Installation With Christina Kim
DESCRIPTION:Free\nPlease join Arcana: Books on the Arts on Friday\, December 16th from 6 to 8PM\, to celebrate Christina Kim’s publication of dosa glossary along with a special month-long installation inside their store. \nChristina Kim is a Los Angeles-based designer who is the co-founder of dosa. Textiles play a central role in her design practice\, which ranges from housewares and clothing to temporary installations and architectural projects. This year\, she has created a public art piece for the APAP5 art triennial in Anyang\, Korea\, a four-month installation at the Museo Textil de Oaxaca in Mexico\, and collaborated with architect Peter Zumthor for the Venice Architecture Biennale. Her work is currently on display as part of the three-person “Scraps: Fashion\, Textiles and Creative Reuse” exhibition at New York’s  Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum. \ndosa glossary is a beautiful one hundred and eight page gazette designed by Christina with Green Dragon Office of Los Angeles and printed by Sankei Shinbun in Tokyo. With one hundred and four entries\, it is a “collection of techniques\, textiles\, people and organizations involved with dosa\, past and present. Information is based on our notes from the field – insights gained working side by side with artisans\, knowledge shared with us firsthand and reference material from books picked up along our travels.” \nChristina will sign this limited edition piece at Arcana the night of the opening.  Her accompanying site-specific installation is a visual and sometimes tactile reflection of the entries and concepts illustrated in the glossary that will be a magical and playful environment in which to discover dosa from a to z and the creative connections\, both carefully considered and wondrously serendipitous\, that it inspires.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing with Jeff Gold
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, November 19th from 5:00 to 7:00PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for the celebration of the publication of Total Chaos: The Story Of The Stooges / As Told By Iggy Pop\, meet their longtime pal Jeff Gold\, quaff refreshments\, and see an extraordinary one-day-only exhibition of rare Stooges memorabilia. \nAuthor Jeff Gold and contributor Johan Kugelberg – noted music historians and collectors both – spent two days with Iggy Pop at his Miami home\, sharing with him their extensive Stooges collection and interviewing the legendary singer. Pop’s candid\, bare-all responses left them with the almost unbelievable tale of the band he founded as a teenager in Michigan nearly fifty years ago. It is the alternately tragic and triumphant story of a group who rose from youth\, fell prey to drugs\, alcohol\, and music biz realities\, collapsed\, and nearly thirty years later reformed to record and tour once again to great acclaim. In 2010 The Stooges\, credited with having invented punk rock\, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Their continuing influence can be felt today in the shape and sound of rock ‘n’ roll music. \nJeff Gold\, Johan Kugelberg\, and editor / contributor Jon Savage are among the most respected music authors and historians working today. Their efforts include numerous acclaimed and best-selling books and a Grammy Award. Published by Third Man Books\, Total Chaos stands as a work for all fans of the band and rock music to draw inspiration from. Including an absolute treasure-trove of rare and unseen photographs\, it is a metallic k.o. of only the best kind that shows AND tells the story of The Stooges.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts A Shindig For The Ice Plant's 10th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, November 12th from 5:00 to 7:00PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for The Ice Plant’s 10th Anniversary Party. The evening’s celebration will feature book signings for ED PANAR: Animals That Saw Me Volume Two and MIKE SLACK: Walking In Place 1 – New Orleans\, with special appearances by many of The Ice Plant’s own authors and artists\, including Ron Jude\, Bettina Hubby\, Michael Schmelling\, Seth Lower\, Antoine Wilson\, and Melissa Catanese – plus Margaritas (Mike’s own mix) and the accordion stylings of Arcana’s Erin Schneider! \nThe Ice Plant began producing artist books in 2006\, and has been publishing significant illustrated and photography books and other fine printed matter for the following decade. The dynamic duo behind the press – Tricia Gabriel and Mike Slack – would like to thank all their artists and loyal customers for making these ten years possible. \nED PANAR: Animals That Saw Me: Volume Two – The sequel – at last! Pairing a selection of new work and newly discovered gems from Ed Panar’s vast archive with an original essay on “being seen” by philosopher Timothy Morton\, this volume digs deeper into the question: “Why do we assume that it’s only us who does the looking?” \nMIKE SLACK: Walking in Place 1: New Orleans – Co-published in an edition of six hundred copies with Perimeter Editions\, Melbourne\, this is the first in Mike Slack’s new series of standalone volumes; each a pocket-sized ‘ambient travelogue’ of a particular geographic (or ‘psychogeographic’) location. This installment intermingles local fauna\, architectural details\, curious street cats\, and urban ephemera\, all skewed toward the sublime in the peculiar sunlight of New Orleans.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Launch With Molly Schiot
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 22nd from 5 to 7PM\, Please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for the book launch of Game Changers: The Unsung Heroines of Sports History by Molly Schiot. \nTwo years ago\, filmmaker Molly Schiot began the Instagram account @TheUnsungHeroines – posting a photograph each day of a female athlete who had changed the face of sports around the globe in the pre-Title IX era. These women paved the way for the likes of Serena Williams\, Carli Lloyd\, and Lindsey Vonn\, yet few today know who they are. The account gained a devoted following\, and the result is Game Changers: The Unsung Heroines of Sports History\, a beautifully illustrated collection of these trailblazers’ rarely-before-seen photos and stories. \nFeaturing icons Althea Gibson and Wyomia Tyus\, unknowns Trudy Beck and Conchita Cintron\, policymaker Margaret Dunkle\, sportswriter Lisa Olson\, and many more\, Game Changers gives these “founding mothers” the overdue recognition they richly deserve. The book also features critical conversations between past and present game changers such as former US Women’s National Soccer Team captain Abby Wambach and SportsCenter anchor Cari Champion about what it means to be a woman on and off the field. Inspiring\, empowering\, and unforgettable\, Game Changers is perfect for anyone with a love of the game. \nJoining Ms. Schiot at Arcana will be several of the athletes featured in the book along with Pro Table Tennis champion Kim Gilbert\, who will be bringing a table and demonstrating some tricks of the trade. And\, only those buying a book at the event will additionally receive a copy of the rad\, limited edition poster of pioneering skateboarder Laura Thornhill!

SUMMARY:Arcana Partners With LA Forum For Architecture And Verso Books For A Book Signing + Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 15th from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they welcome The LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design in partnership with Verso Books to present a conversation about the history of the US / Mexico border and the militarization of border walls around the world on the occasion of the launch of Reece Jones’ Violent Borders: Refugees and the Right to Move. Jones\, an expert on international border security projects and a geographer at the University of Hawaii\, will discuss his book with architect Rene Peralta. \nViolent Borders breaks down the contradictions of living in a globalized world that simultaneously attempts to limit the free movement of people. Jones travels the border regions of the world\, documenting the billions of dollars spent on border security projects\, and their dire consequences for the majority of the people in the world. While the poor are restricted by the lottery of birth to slums and the aftershocks of decolonization\, the wealthy travel freely\, exploiting pools of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations. \nThe US / Mexico border – a major focus of the book – is a perfect example of the global hardening of borders. Over the past thirty years\, many borders have been transformed into militarized security spaces through increased funding\, deployments of additional guards\, and construction of walls and surveillance infrastructure. While two-thirds of the border with Mexico remains unfenced\, the federal fences are products of the relatively recent 2006 Secure Fence Act\, and the Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to build a wall on the remaining section of the border has been a major issue of the presidential election. Jones will make the case that borders are not the answer to our problems\, and end on a simple\, yet important idea: borders need not be a natural part of the human world. \nReece Jones is a Professor of Geography at the University of Hawaii in Manoa\, and the author of Border Walls\, published by Zed Books in 2013. He is an award-winning scholar whose work has been featured in Time Magazine\, The Economist\, and Vice who is often called on to comment on border crises by publications such as the New York Times. \nRene Peralta is the co-founder of the Tijuana-based architectural firm Generica as well as the Director of the Architecture\, Landscape + Urbanism program at the Woodbury University School of Architecture in San Diego. His recent work has been directed toward the research of social and cultural forms of urban border between the cities of Tijuana\, Mexico and San Diego\, California.

The discussion will be followed by a book signing. \nNew York / Los Angeles\, Photographs: 1967-2015 is a remarkable collection of compelling images of life in two of America’s most exciting cities\, as seen through the eye of photographer Lloyd Ziff. This lovely two volume set – newly published by KMWstudio – encompasses more than forty years of black and white and color photography. As both cities change before Ziff’s inquiring lens\, his unique vision emerges\, amused and ironic\, finding beauty and surprise in daily urban life. \nAbout Lloyd Ziff\nSince 2000\, Ziff has made photography the focus of his career. He has had one man shows at New York’s Danziger Gallery and Earl McGrath Gallery in Los Angeles. His photographs have been included in Patti Smith’s autobiography\, Just Kids\, and The Spirit of Family by Al and Tipper Gore as well as in Blind Spot\, Interview\, Kid’s Wear (Germany)\, New York\, Rolling Stone\, and The New York Times Magazine. His book\, Full Moon\, published by Steidl\, is an eclectic overview of his personal art collection and of the artists he collects. In 1973\, after thirty years as a native of Oklahoma City\, he moved to Los Angeles to work for his brother\, Edward\, where he presently documents all of his studio’s artistic production. He met Lloyd Ziff in L.A. in 1973 and they have been close friends ever since. \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing & Discussion With Anthony Hernandez
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 8th from 4 to 6PM\, Arcana: Books on the Arts and The Photographic Arts Council/LA invite you to a book signing with Anthony Hernandez\, in conversation with artist Thomas Demand. \nSince the early 1970s\, when he began photographing on the streets of his native Los Angeles\, Anthony Hernandez has consistently pushed his practice into uncharted territory. Challenging himself by adopting new formats and subject matter\, moving from black and white to color\, from 35mm to large-format cameras\, and from the human figure to landscapes to abstracted detail\, he has produced an unusually varied body of work united by its arresting beauty and subtle engagement with social issues. At first largely unaware of the formal traditions of the medium\, Hernandez developed his own style of street photography\, one uniquely attuned to the desolate allure and sprawling expanses of LA. \nPublished in conjunction with the photographer’s major career-spanning retrospective at SFMoMA\, Anthony Hernandez is a beautifully designed and printed hardbound catalogue featuring an introduction by Robert Adams\, texts by Erin O’Toole\, Ralph Rugoff\, Lewis Baltz\, and Anthony Hernandez\, and an extensive selection of images – including many that have until now never been exhibited or published. It represents the full range and breadth of Hernandez’ work tracing his evolution as well as highlighting continuities across his practice. \nSnacks and refreshments will be provided.
