SUMMARY:Arcana Partners With LA Forum For Architecture And Verso Books For A Book Signing + Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 15th from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they welcome The LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design in partnership with Verso Books to present a conversation about the history of the US / Mexico border and the militarization of border walls around the world on the occasion of the launch of Reece Jones’ Violent Borders: Refugees and the Right to Move. Jones\, an expert on international border security projects and a geographer at the University of Hawaii\, will discuss his book with architect Rene Peralta. \nViolent Borders breaks down the contradictions of living in a globalized world that simultaneously attempts to limit the free movement of people. Jones travels the border regions of the world\, documenting the billions of dollars spent on border security projects\, and their dire consequences for the majority of the people in the world. While the poor are restricted by the lottery of birth to slums and the aftershocks of decolonization\, the wealthy travel freely\, exploiting pools of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations. \nThe US / Mexico border – a major focus of the book – is a perfect example of the global hardening of borders. Over the past thirty years\, many borders have been transformed into militarized security spaces through increased funding\, deployments of additional guards\, and construction of walls and surveillance infrastructure. While two-thirds of the border with Mexico remains unfenced\, the federal fences are products of the relatively recent 2006 Secure Fence Act\, and the Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call to build a wall on the remaining section of the border has been a major issue of the presidential election. Jones will make the case that borders are not the answer to our problems\, and end on a simple\, yet important idea: borders need not be a natural part of the human world. \nReece Jones is a Professor of Geography at the University of Hawaii in Manoa\, and the author of Border Walls\, published by Zed Books in 2013. He is an award-winning scholar whose work has been featured in Time Magazine\, The Economist\, and Vice who is often called on to comment on border crises by publications such as the New York Times. \nRene Peralta is the co-founder of the Tijuana-based architectural firm Generica as well as the Director of the Architecture\, Landscape + Urbanism program at the Woodbury University School of Architecture in San Diego. His recent work has been directed toward the research of social and cultural forms of urban border between the cities of Tijuana\, Mexico and San Diego\, California.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts A Conversation Between Paul Ruscha and Lloyd Ziff
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, October 13th from 5 to 7PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts and KMWstudio for an L.A.-centric conversation between Paul Ruscha and photographer Lloyd Ziff to celebrate the publication of the lovely New York / Los Angeles\, Photographs: 1967-2015. The discussion will be followed by a book signing. \nNew York / Los Angeles\, Photographs: 1967-2015 is a remarkable collection of compelling images of life in two of America’s most exciting cities\, as seen through the eye of photographer Lloyd Ziff. This lovely two volume set – newly published by KMWstudio – encompasses more than forty years of black and white and color photography. As both cities change before Ziff’s inquiring lens\, his unique vision emerges\, amused and ironic\, finding beauty and surprise in daily urban life. \nAbout Lloyd Ziff\nSince 2000\, Ziff has made photography the focus of his career. He has had one man shows at New York’s Danziger Gallery and Earl McGrath Gallery in Los Angeles. His photographs have been included in Patti Smith’s autobiography\, Just Kids\, and The Spirit of Family by Al and Tipper Gore as well as in Blind Spot\, Interview\, Kid’s Wear (Germany)\, New York\, Rolling Stone\, and The New York Times Magazine. Ziff’s work is included in the permanent collections of The Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, The Palm Springs Art Museum\, and The International Center of Photography. In 1999\, he was elected to the Board of Trustees of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, New York\, his alma mater. \nAbout Paul Ruscha\nPaul Ruscha is a photographer\, calligrapher\, and sometimes a writer. His book\, Full Moon\, published by Steidl\, is an eclectic overview of his personal art collection and of the artists he collects. In 1973\, after thirty years as a native of Oklahoma City\, he moved to Los Angeles to work for his brother\, Edward\, where he presently documents all of his studio’s artistic production. He met Lloyd Ziff in L.A. in 1973 and they have been close friends ever since. \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing & Discussion With Anthony Hernandez
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 8th from 4 to 6PM\, Arcana: Books on the Arts and The Photographic Arts Council/LA invite you to a book signing with Anthony Hernandez\, in conversation with artist Thomas Demand. \nSince the early 1970s\, when he began photographing on the streets of his native Los Angeles\, Anthony Hernandez has consistently pushed his practice into uncharted territory. Challenging himself by adopting new formats and subject matter\, moving from black and white to color\, from 35mm to large-format cameras\, and from the human figure to landscapes to abstracted detail\, he has produced an unusually varied body of work united by its arresting beauty and subtle engagement with social issues. At first largely unaware of the formal traditions of the medium\, Hernandez developed his own style of street photography\, one uniquely attuned to the desolate allure and sprawling expanses of LA. \nPublished in conjunction with the photographer’s major career-spanning retrospective at SFMoMA\, Anthony Hernandez is a beautifully designed and printed hardbound catalogue featuring an introduction by Robert Adams\, texts by Erin O’Toole\, Ralph Rugoff\, Lewis Baltz\, and Anthony Hernandez\, and an extensive selection of images – including many that have until now never been exhibited or published. It represents the full range and breadth of Hernandez’ work tracing his evolution as well as highlighting continuities across his practice. \nSnacks and refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts A Book Signing With Randi Malkin Steinberger
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, October 1st from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing of No Circus by photographer Randi Malkin Steinberger.\nNo Circus is a collection of photographer Randi Malkin Steinberger’s vibrant color images of buildings in and around Los Angeles that have been tented for termite fumigation. After moving to the city in the early nineties\, she first encountered these brightly shrouded structures and began to stop and photograph them. Knowing that they might be undraped at any given moment\, Steinberger was intrigued by the way the colors and shapes of the tents revealed the buildings inside and highlighted the beauty of the poor plants on the outside\, still flourishing\, unaware that they were slowly being poisoned. Beyond their intended purpose of fumigation\, these tents also unwittingly beckon us to stop and contemplate architectural form\, the meaning of home\, and the lure of the Southern California lifestyle. No Circus features a text by noted essayist D.J. Waldie\, and is the culmination of a two decade pursuit of these temporary architectural enigmas.\nJoining Arcana along with Ms. Steinberger and Mr. Waldie will be the book’s designer – and Deadbeat Club head honcho – Clint Woodside along with a special musical performance by composer Gavin Gamboa. Evoking the language of insects – both real and imagined – as well as the sounds of quarantine\, Mr. Gamboa of The Teaching Machine collective will provide a backdrop of chirping\, clicking\, whirling\, buzzing oscillations to the event!

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Pamela Littky
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, September 15th from 6 to 8PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in welcoming Pamela Littky for a book signing of The Villa Bonita. \nLike many apartment buildings in Hollywood\, the Villa Bonita was built during the film industry’s first heyday bridging the 1920s to the 1930s. Built for the vast crews and casts that Cecil B. DeMille was hiring during the period\, the Villa Bonita has housed great Hollywood figures from Errol Flynn to Francis Ford Coppola. \nIn the absence of traditionally scaled\, walkable neighborhoods\, Los Angeles has long created community within the confines of these kinds of apartment complexes. Young and old\, employed and between gigs\, dreamers and those whose dreams left long ago – everyone arrived at the Villa Bonita for one good reason or another. Featuring a foreword by Cameron Crowe\, this striking hardbound volume brings us within intimate distance of its subjects\, as Los Angeles-based photographer – and Arcana favorite – Pamela Littky surveys all of the inhabitants of this historic apartment tower in the middle of Hollywood\, creating a collective portrait of the transient nature of the city.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing For "Courts 02" By Ward Roberts
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, July 28th from 5 to 7PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts along with Éditions for a book launch and signing for Courts 02 by Ward Roberts. Following the release of Courts in 2012\, New York-based photographer Ward Roberts releases the second volume of his comprehensive body of work documenting sporting courts in Hong Kong\, Bermuda\, Hawaii\, New York\, and Melbourne. \nPublisher Éditions has produced two separate releases of the book – a standard edition plus a collector’s edition limited to one hundred examples – and for the very first time a selection of three 23 x 23″ color prints that will be on display and available for sale at the event. \n“As all iconic images inevitably do\, Ward Roberts’ Courts have now become a force of their own\, circulating the world with terrific velocity via the rushing slipstream of the Internet\, gathering momentum and making their mark upon the global eye. His work has brought together a growing community of followers\, with whom he feels a humble sense of connection. This is\, in a sense\, the most beautiful reflection of the essence of what makes his images so riveting\, his art so powerful: he gives life to the spaces of photography\, and photography to the spaces of life”. – Excerpt from Jennifer Kransinki’s foreword to Courts 02\, 2016. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\n310.458.1499 \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts A Celebration For Bettina Hubby
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 10th from 4 to 6PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts\, Klowden Mann\, and LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) to celebrate the release of Bettina Hubby’s Thanks for the Mammaries. This artist’s book documents the various iterations of Hubby’s ongoing project Thanks for the Mammaries\, the Facebook feed which was originally installed at the LAND HQ from October through November of 2015. \nIn 2014\, Hubby announced her Breast Cancer diagnosis on Facebook and asked her friends and community to submit “boob-related imagery.” People showered Hubby with images\, videos\, and verbiage that helped her heal\, and inspired her to pay it forward. Touched by the uplifting effect of this communal support\, Hubby sent out a call to artists to submit works for an exhibition. The exhibitions and online Facebook feed displayed the outpouring of support that resulted from Hubby’s call to action; selections of which are documented in the publication. “What continues to bring me the most satisfaction is the feedback regarding my approach\, in that it has been positively impacting and inspiring people who have (and even many who have not) faced illness in their lives\, or in their loved ones’ lives. This is why I wanted to release this as a book to a wider audience. This book is dedicated to the medicinal power of boobishness”. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\n310.458.1499 \n

Since founding Johnston Marklee\, Johnston and Lee have forged a leading role in the cultural discourse around contemporary art and architecture\, eliciting design collaborations with distinguished museums\, foundations\, and artists around the world. Complementing this far-reaching network\, the firm’s work is recognized for being deeply rooted in the history and foundations of the discipline. \nAbout Veronika Kellndorfer\nOriginally through painting and more recently through photography\, Veronika Kellndorfer has been concerned with the physical and social construction of space. In her recent body of work\, Kellndorfer photographed classic modernist architectural landmarks in Los Angeles including the only house built by Oscar Niemeyer in the United States\, Rudolph Schindler’s Lovell Beach House\, John Lautner’s Silvertop home in Silver Lake\, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Freeman House\, among others. Yet\, rather than capturing the iconic wide-angle views of these famously photographed homes\, Kellndorfer focuses on the intimate details of windows and reflections and how they reveal the ephemeral nature of seeing\, as well as the subjectivity of space. This ambiguity of space is heightened by the artist’s use of highly reflective glass panels that are often life-sized\, and when displayed in a public setting\, museum or gallery\, invites the viewer to experience his or her own subjective surroundings. \nHer exhibition Tropical Modernism: Lina Bo Bardi will be on view at Christopher Grimes Gallery from July 8th through September 2nd\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Double Book Signing: Deanna Templeton and Clint Woodside
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 18th from 5 to 7pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a double book signing for these two amazing releases\, Deanna Templeton’s The Swimming Pool and Clint Woodside’s Undercover Cars. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\n310.458.1499 \nDeanna Templeton’s The Swimming Pool is a newly published photographic essay from this Southern California-based artist. Departing from her well-known street portraiture\, this collection offers a deep and inspiring view of the human form underwater. The series was born after an impromptu nude swimming pool shoot of her husband – the artist Ed Templeton – which spurred an eight-year journey in the study of light\, expression\, and the enigma of water. Shooting entirely on color\, black-and-white\, and Polaroid film\, Templeton sends her friends into the pool to be photographed in their truest form. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nClint Woodside’s Undercover Cars was first issued in 2013 as a Deadbeat Club zine and has been newly re-conceived and substantially enlarged as an elegant hardcover book. Containing fifty-two images of cars parked in plain sight\, but covered from the elements\, it is the culmination of a series of color photographs – shot on film and printed in the dark room – spanning five years\, scores of autos\, and thousands of miles from Los Angeles to Banghok.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing With Olivia Bee And Special Guest\, BØRNS
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 14th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they host Olivia Bee in a celebration of the publication of her book Kids In Love. Joining Olivia will be her friend and very special musical guest\, BØRNS\, who will present an acoustic set as part of the evening’s festivities. \nOlivia Bee is celebrated for her dreamy\, evocative portraits and landscapes rich with implied narratives of intimacy\, freedom\, and adventure. Her first full-length book Kids in Love from Aperture showcases two bodies of photographic work\, including the series “Enveloped in a Dream” that first brought Bee recognition as a teenager. These images offer a visual diary of girlhood friendship and the exploration of self\, showcasing Bee’s unique ability to convey the bittersweet nostalgia of adolescence on the brink of adulthood and new possibilities. The second\, “Kids in Love”\, is a photographic chronicle of her circle of friends and new loves\, capturing both the pleasures and terrors of the fleeting passage of romanticized youth. While the work continues to evolve\, what remains constant is her seductive use of color and photographic artifact\, as well as the immediacy and charge of each image. \nBee gives voice to the self-awareness and visual fluency of the millennial generation. Experiences are sharply felt\, and easily communicated and shared\, generating visual records that render these memories as significant as the moments themselves. Tavi Gevinson\, founding editor of the online magazine “Rookie” as well as Bee’s frequent collaborator and model writes about the work and about the role of images as social currency in today’s image-driven world. \n8675 Washington Boulevard\n310-458-1499 \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A (Double) Book Signing With Ed Templeton And Ethan Rafal
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 5th from 4:00 to 6:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for another exciting\, double-header with two of their fave phtographers: Ed Templeton and Ethan Rafal. \nEd Templeton \nIn 1999\, the late\, great Alleged Gallery published Ed Templeton’s first book of photography\, Teenage Smokers. In the intervening sixteen years Ed is a firmly entrenched guiding light of the Southern California art community\, and Teenage Smokers has become a sought-after high spot for any photo book collection. \nNow\, hot off the press from Tokyo’s Super Labo is Teenage Smokers 2 – featuring a brand new generation of nicotine-inhaling youngsters. Ed will be signing – and no doubt drawing in – copies of this\, the newly republished Wayward Cognitions\, a few remaining copies of the now sold out Deadbeat Club Common Side Effects Huntington Beach catalogue\, Umbrella\, and his magnificent new travelogue of Santa Catalina Island\, Adventures in the Nearby Far Away. We’ll also have copies of the original Teenage Smokers along with a few vintage rarities available here the day of the event. \nCome celebrate this treasure trove of new and vintage Templetoniana. Sales of Common Side Effects and Adventures in the Nearby Far Away will be limited to one per customer for those attending the event while supplies last. \nEthan Rafal: Shock and Awe \nSan Francisco-based Ethan Rafal has produced one of our favorite photography books of recent years! A complex autobiographical project examining the relationship between protracted war and homeland decay\, Shock and Awe is a meticulously crafted work combining image\, text\, and found objects compiled over twelve years of traveling the United States that blurs the line between author and subject\, and personal versus authoritative histories. Drawing from the traditions of documentary photography and writing set on the American road\, the unique\, hand-made journal was created with transfer prints\, handwriting\, and found materials that were bound in the remains of an abandoned vehicle. This trade edition limited to five hundred copies carefully reproduces every inch of every page conveying the look and feel of the original down to its strap closure. Made by middle-class workers in Spain\, the paper was sustainably harvested in Finland\, and the cloth is from New England. \nThe artist introduces audiences to this work through his ongoing “Shock and Awe Book Tour” which returns the journal to the people and places depicted\, bringing author\, subject\, and viewer into an exploration of the total meaning of the work. The presentation of Shock and Awe is equal parts story-telling\, show-and-tell\, and group discussion featuring for its Arcana stop ample homemade cast-iron walnut pie served with bourbon and milk. \nEthan Rafal’s multi-media works deal with the individual and collective experience of violence\, and the ways in which subsequent representations of violence inform personal and national mythologies. He helps run The Farmstand – an alternative artspace on a farm in Northern California – and collaborates with the Bay Area’s Art For a Democratic Society. \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Special Saturday (Double) Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 14th from 4:00 to 7:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for the first in a series of exciting\, overlapping double-headers with two of their favorite photographers to celebrate their new publications documenting modern-day working class heroes in the United Kingdom. \nJONA FRANK: THE MODERN KIDS 4:00 until 6:00 PM \nIn the Fall of 2010\, photographer Jona Frank began to make portraits at an amateur boxing club just outside of Liverpool in a suburb called Ellesmere Port. All the boys tried to act tough for the camera\, and Frank was reminded of a line from the Arcade Fire song Rococo: “They seem wild\, but they are so tame”. In the song they are singing about going downtown and watching the modern kids. It made Frank think about how these boys\, in this town\, are in their life. For them\, everything is present. This is their 21st Century\, their right now\, but their faces evoke the past. Some people might confuse the realism of Jona’s work with a certain anti-romanticism. But she’s just bending the ideal by holding true to the photographer’s mantra “keep your eyes open and be true to your heart“. \nSanta Monica-based Jona Frank’s thought-provoking books of youth-oriented portraits\, High School and Right: Portraits from the Evangelical Ivy League are perennial favorites\, and The Modern Kids makes a stunning new companion. \nNICK WAPLINGTON: LIVING ROOM WORK PRINTS 5:00 until 7:00 PM \nBy the late 1980s England had experienced ten years of Conservative government\, the collapse of industry\, the rise in poverty and unemployment\, and centralized government’s abandonment of people and place. It is in this context that British photographer Nick Waplington spent four years documenting the daily lives of two working-class families on a council estate in Nottingham\, England. Rather than embracing the contemporary photographic conventions of social realism\, Waplington chronicled the lives of these families in saturated color\, capturing an intimate narrative with poignancy and an unexpected humor. \nNick Waplington makes no dramatic social statements\, but rather a quite touching (matter-of-fact) chronicle of the daily struggle of the working-class. “Living Room is tender and poignant\, wonderfully documenting the physical and physiological dysfunctionality of families enduring the plight of economic deficiency”.

The book includes homes shown in the context of both more-established design-cities\, as well as urban locales where economic disadvantage and strife impacts daily life. SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing With Ron Jude
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 10th from 4:00 – 6:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on The Arts for a book signing with Ron Jude. To construct Lago\, Ron Jude returns to the California desert of his early childhood as if a detective in search of clues to his own identity. In this brand new MACK book of fifty-four photographs taken between 2011 and 2014\, he attempts to reconcile the vagaries of memory (and the uncertainty of looking) with our need to make narrative sense of things. \nUsing a desolate desert lake as a theatrical backdrop\, Jude meanders through the arid landscape of his youth\, making note of everything from venomous spiders to discarded pornography. If one considers these traces to be a coded language of some sort\, Jude’s act of photographing and piecing them together becomes a form of cryptography – like a poetic archaeology that\, rather than attempting to arrive at something conclusive\, looks for patterns and rhythms that create congruity out of the stuttering utterances of the visible world. According to Jude\, “these harmonies\, when we’re lucky enough to find them\, are probably the closest we can get to discovering actual ‘meaning’ and grasping the potency of place.” \nIf you would like to purchase a signed copy of Lago but cannot attend\, please place an order here\, or call 310-458-1499.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing With Greg Gorman
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, August 15th from 4:00 – 6:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing of Outside the Studio\, Greg Gorman’s tenth monograph. It finds the noted Los Angeles-based photographer outside the reaches of the portrait and figure-study work for which he is best known\, and onto the streets of Southeast Asia. Traveling throughout Singapore\, Malaysia\, China and India on behalf of Epson to participate in symposiums on fine art digital printing\, Gorman got a firsthand look at these very different cultures at the very beginning of the digital revolution. \nWorking in the studio with the likes of Marlon Brando or Robert De Niro had become second nature\, and his long-running series of celebrity portraits for L.A. Eyeworks is viewed as one of the iconic advertising campaigns of the late twentieth century. However\, having shot exclusively on film for more than thirty years\, the transition from analogue to digital cameras was a new experience for Gorman\, and being thrust in front of strangers in China\, Kuala Lampur\, India\, Thailand\, Cambodia\, and Vietnam was an adventure – one who’s engaging results are revealed in this lovely new book from Damiani Editore. \n \n

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing With Shio Kusaka + Jonas Wood
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, July 6th from 6:00 – 8:00pm\, please join Arcana in celebration of the collaborative work of Shio Kusaka and Jonas Wood. Ms. Kusaka and Mr. Wood draw from each others work as painter and potter to probe the tensions between representation and expression\, precision and chance\, and influences from art history and life. Kusaka’s porcelain vessels play muse to Wood’s drawn and painted interiors\, while conversely their idiosyncratic forms and glazes owe something to his impulsive line. They draw from personal memory and their shared existence as a married couple – his half-objective\, half-fictional Los Angeles landscapes and still lifes set in their studio on Culver City’s Blackwelder Street\, and her painted patterns that allude to their young daughter’s fascination with dinosaurs. \nThe two share influences and imagery but embark on autonomous explorations of their respective media. Exhibited together\, these symbiotic works reveal the autobiographical roots and layers of cross-pollination that inspire their creation. Shio Kusaka and Jonas Wood’s unique collaborative working process and artistic output are beautifully documented in the newly-published Gagosian and Rizzoli monograph Blackwelder.

SUMMARY:Arcana Hosts A Book Signing With Linda Rosenkrantz
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 5th from 4:00pm – 6:00pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts as they host an afternoon meet and greet with author Linda Rosenkrantz in celebration of her innovative and now-classic Summer read: TALK. \nTalk is a hilariously irreverent and racy testament to dialogue – the gossip\, questioning\, analysis\, arguments and revelations that make up our closest friendships. Set in the summer of 1965\, Emily\, Vincent\, and Marsha are at the beach. The trio are ambitious\, artistic\, hovering around thirty\, and deeply and mercilessly invested in analyzing themselves along with everyone around them. They discuss  sex\, shrinks\, psychedelics\, sculpture\, and S&M in an ongoing narrative where anything goes\, and no topic is off limits. These conversations were tape-recorded by Linda Rosenkrantz and transformed into a novel whose form and content put it well ahead of its time. Controversial upon its first publication in 1968\, Talk remains fresh\, lascivious\, and laugh-out-loud funny nearly fifty years later. \nLinda Rosenkrantz is the author of several books including Telegram!: Modern History as Told Through More than 400 Witty\, Poignant\, and Revealing Telegrams\, her memoir\, My Life as a List: 207 Things About My (Bronx) Childhood\, and the co-author with Christopher Finch of Gone Hollywood: The Movie Colony in the Golden Age. She resides in Los Angeles and is a founder of the popular baby-naming site Nameberry.com.
