SUMMARY:Book Signing with Melba Levick and Rubén Mendoza for Casa Santa Fe
DESCRIPTION:Free \nPlease join Arcana: Books on the Arts on Saturday\, April 8th\, 4:00 – 6:00 pm for a book signing with Melba Levick and Rubén Mendoza for Casa Santa Fe!\nCasa Santa Fe: Design\, Style\, Arts\, and Tradition\nPhotographs by Melba Levick\, Text by Rubén G. Mendoza\n\n“Desert hues\, natural materials\, thick hand-plastered walls\, and adobe brick construction are hallmarks of the Santa Fe Style\, which is as much an expression in architecture\, interior design\, art\, and crafts as it is a way of life. Rooted in a sense of earthy comfort inspired by its history\, the surrounding desert\, and Native American and Hispanic design influences\, the style has a timeless appeal and vibrant ongoing life that has resulted in these extraordinary homes. \nWith features such as eighteenth-century peeled vigas\, tin chandeliers\, romantic iron sconces\, and hand-hewn wood-beamed ceilings\, each house is a rich yet harmonious invitation that will engage the senses and speak to the soul. Beyond the houses\, the writer and photographer spotlight those details and spaces that together convey the magic of this very special place\, including patios and gardens; fireplaces\, kivas\, and hornos; ceramics; Native American arts; cabinets and trasteros; folk art; and weaving. \nCasa Santa Fe is the definitive sourcebook for architects\, designers\, builders\, homeowners\, and interior decorators seeking to expand their visual repertoire of historically defined and classically inspired architectural details and interior appointments.” \n

Melba Levick is an internationally renowned photographer based in Los Angeles and Paris\, with more than sixty books to her name. Her most recent publications from Rizzoli include The Spanish Style House\, The California Missions\, The Ranches: Home on the Range in California\, The California Casa\, and Classic Homes of Los Angeles. \nDr. Rubén G. Mendoza is an archaeologist\, photographer\, and founding faculty member of the California State University\, Monterey Bay. He is the author of several books including The Spanish Style House\, The California Missions\, and Mission San Miguel Arcángel. \n\nIf you cannot attend but would like to purchase a signed copy\, please call Arcana Books at 310-458-1499.

SUMMARY:LAXART's director Hamza Walker with Yusuf Hassan and Kwamé Sorrell of BlackMass Publishing at Arcana Books
DESCRIPTION:Free\nIn collaboration with the University of California\, Irvine and Arcana Books\, we are excited to announce an in person discussion between LAXART’s director Hamza Walker and Yusuf Hassan and Kwamé Sorrell of BlackMass Publishing. Their discussion will be held at Arcana Books on Saturday\, January 28th at 4pm. \nFounded by Yusuf Hassan in 2019\, BlackMass Publishing is a New York-based collective and independent press. At once a structure of coherent units and a collection of disjointed parts\, BlackMass invokes an aggregate of Blackness\, of matter in resistance. Combining archival photographs and found print material with poetry and jazz music\, BlackMass grapples with the blurred lines and idiosyncrasies which make up the collective improvisation of African diasporic culture. \nBlackMass have publications included in the permanent book collections of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture\, New York\, RAW Material Company\, Dakar\, Center for Book Arts\, New York\, The Thomas J. Watson Library\, New York\, The Whitney Museum Library\, New York\, The Houghton Library\, Cambridge\, The Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center\, New York\, The New York Public Library\, and The Evergreen State College\, Washington.

SUMMARY:Book Signing at Arcana with Lawrence Weschler: A Trove of Zohars
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 14th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing for Lawrence Weschler‘s brand new Hat & Beard publication\, A Trove of Zohars. For the event Mr. Weschler will be joined by photographer and early-photographic process historian Stephen Berkman for a discussion about the book and the shrouded-in-mystery Zohar Studios. \n“So Lawrence Weschler was minding his own business\, as all his stories begin\, when he got a call from Gravity Goldberg (her real name!) who introduced herself as the Director of Public Programs and Visitor Experience at The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. She was calling\, she told him\, to apprise him of an upcoming show – an inaugural exhibition\, that is\, of a recently uncovered trove of work by Shimmel Zohar\, a mid-19th-century Lithuanian immigrant photographer. A contemporary of Mathew Brady\, Zohar had chronicled the Jewish immigrant community of the Lower East Side of 1860s – 1870s Manhattan in unparalleled detail\, compiling a complete inventory of professions and types. Or not. There was\, she suggested\, some slippage in the whole story\, and they were trying to find someone who might be willing to investigate things\, and they were wondering\, might he be interested? \nThus begins an antic tale of investigative perplex and vertiginous inquiry\, as Weschler tracks down Stephen Berkman\, the wet-collodion devotee who claims to have discovered the trove in question\, but it’s a long and loopy story. And indeed\, Weschler’s account evolves into the fourth volume of his ongoing “Chronicles of Slippage” series\, doing for the early history of photography and the long heritance of Judaism what the series’ first volume\, the Pulitzer-shortlisted Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonder\, once did for the history of museums and the phenomenology of marvel. \nAnd that’s just the half of it\, for the main text sprouts a veritable delirium of digressive footnotes (taking up more than half the book)\, constituting what may be the closest we are going to ever get by way of memoir from this confounding and beloved writer.” \nIf you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at the shop\, please contact the store for details or order online.

SUMMARY:Book Signing at Arcana with Doug Aitken: Works 1992-2022
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 10th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing afternoon with Doug Aitken on the launch of his latest release\, Works 1992-2022.  If you cannot attend and would like to order a signed copy to have shipped or to pick up at the shop\, please contact the store for details or order online. \nThis comprehensive new book explores the career of multimedia artist Doug Aitken\, following the path from his first major works in the late 1990s through to the present day. Aitken’s work encompasses large-scale film installations such as Sleepwalkers (2007)\, site-specific sculptures including his Underwater Pavilions (2016) installed off the coast of Catalina Island\, California\, and peripatetic happenings like Station to Station (2013)\, which saw a train containing a travelling studio cross the USA from the Atlantic to the Pacific\, staging unique performance events at each stop. Weaving together images and text in an energetic composition of rhythm and movement\, this authoritative volume mirrors the ways in which Aitken has approached and explored the contemporary world in his conceptual body of work across multiple mediums. \nWith an introduction by Joseph Akel and a new extended essay on Aitken’s oeuvre by Daniel Birnbaum\, plus archival essays and interviews with the artist by writers including Marc Spiegler\, Terry Riley\, Hans Ulrich Obrist\, Joseph Grima\, April Lamm\, Susan Solomon\, and Jörg Heiser.

SUMMARY:Book Signing at Arcana with David Shrigley: Get Your Shit Together
DESCRIPTION:Free\nPlease join us at Arcana: Books on the Arts on Sunday\, November 20th\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM\, for a book signing \nDavid Shrigley: Get Your Shit Together\nWe are delighted to invite you to attend a special book signing with David Shrigley. Get Your Shit Together is the first book that exclusively features the iconic British artist’s recent artwork in color. It celebrates Shrigley’s absurd\, deadpan sensibility through both his signature drawing style and accompanying text. \nIf you cannot attend but would like a signed copy\, please call Arcana at 310-458-1499. \nDavid Shrigley was born in 1968 in Macclesfield\, UK. He lives and works in Brighton and Devon. In January 2020 the artist was awarded the decoration of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or OBE. Shrigley’s quick-witted drawings and hand-rendered texts are typically deadpan in their humor and reveal chance utterings like snippets of over-heard conversations. Recurring themes and thoughts pervade his storytelling\, capturing deliberately two-dimensional views of the world\, the perspective of aliens and monsters or the compulsive habits of an eavesdropper shouting out loud. While drawing is at the center of his practice\, Shrigley works across an extensive range of media including sculpture\, large-scale installation\, animation\, painting\, photography and music. He consistently seeks to widen his audience by operating outside the gallery sphere\, including producing artist publications and creating collaborative music projects.

Not only the tattoos\, clothing\, and walls related to La Vida Loca\, but also the mothers\, the gardens\, the children\, the working men\, the decorated lowrider cars\, the spirit of resiliency.” – Luis J Rodriguez \nGregory Bojorquez was born in Los Angeles in 1972. He started photographing in his teens\, and set about documenting the subjects and stories that interested him personally. The intimate images he captured in East L.A. were not the product of structured photo sessions or assignments. They were shot from the perspective of a young man hanging out with friends and neighbors. In the late 1980s Gregory began photographing for the L.A. Weekly and was added as a staff photographer. Assignments for magazines and commercial work for major record labels naturally followed. His portraits of personalities such as Snoop Dogg and Mike Tyson appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone and For His magazine. In 1999 Gregory became instrumental in the early beginnings of DUB Magazine where he was brought on as Photo Editor and a feature photographer for a period of more than seven years. Since that time\, Gregory’s photographs have been exhibited internationally in gallery shows\, museum exhibitions\, and art fairs including Photo London\, Paris Photo\, and Art Düsseldorf. His work is represented by Galerie Bene Taschen in Koln\, and by Little Big Man in Los Angeles; who has published this spectacular volume. \n

SUMMARY:Join Arcana Books for a book signing with Clara Balzary: Big Fresh Air
DESCRIPTION:Stop in to Arcana: Books on the Arts this Saturday\, August 6th\, between 4:00 and 6:00 PM to celebrate the launch of Clara Balzary’s Big Fresh Air. \nIf you cannot attend but would like to purchase a book signed by Ms. Balzary\, please place your order here or call Arcana at 310-458-1499. \nClara Balzary is a Los Angeles-based photographer and filmmaker whose first book is the newly released Big Fresh Air from London’s Pinch Publishing. “The photographs in Big Fresh Air were taken over the course of four days\, spanning from the late spring to the late summer of 2021. All pictures are the result of a collaboration with Ruby Kernkamp and Emily Leona Rose. Kernkamp and Rose used contact improvisation techniques to create distinct movement dialogues between participants and the natural landscape\, stemming from an interest in what happens when bodies give and receive weight and touch. Each day took place in the public parks in La Cañada / Flintridge\, a city in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains in Los Angeles County\, during a time when groups were encouraged to gather exclusively in outdoor spaces.”

SUMMARY:Join Arcana Books for a Celebration of the Launch of The Steve Keene Art Book
DESCRIPTION:Stop in Arcana: Books on the Arts this Saturday\, July 30th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM to celebrate the launch of The Steve Keene Art Book\, with special guests Steve Keene\, Dan Efram and J.C. Gabel and co-published by their friends at Hat & Beard Press. If you cannot attend but would like to purchase a signed copy\, please place your order here or call Arcana at 310-458-1499. \nSteve Keene is the most prolific American painter of all time\, producing more than 300\,000 hand-painted works via his studio / chainlink fence cage where he paints more than fifty paintings at a time. \nLovingly known for making affordable art\, as well as being the indie rock cover art maker to Pavement\, The Apples in stereo\, and Silver Jews\, Keene has long been under-appreciated for his importance to the nineties indie art and music scenes. The Steve Keene Art Book – originally conceived during his sold out 2016 show at Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects Gallery – is the first art book dedicated exclusively to his work. \nThe book features essays by musician Hilarie Bratset (The Apples in stereo)\, writer Sam Brumbaugh\, Elle Chang\, Daniel Efram\, Shepard Fairey\, journalist Karen Loew\, and Christina Zafiris\, along with comments from Starling Keene\, curators Jonathan LeVine\, Leo Fitzgerald and Talia Logan\, alongside a dazzling two hundred and seventy-seven reproductions of Keene’s works. Efram takes readers into Keene’s utilitarian chainlink “painting cage” for an all-access pass for a peek into the artist’s fascinating systemic technique. \nThe Steve Keene Art Book is co-published by Hat & Beard Press and Tractor Beam and has been made possible through a crowdfunding campaign that included hundreds of supporters – from Keene’s former hometown of Charlottesville\, Virginia\, to fans from all over the world – who contributed pieces from their own personal collections. It is produced by Daniel Efram\, edited by Gail O’Hara\, editor-in-chief of the “legendary indie nerd bible” chickfactor\, and designed by Grammy-nominated graphic designer Henry Owings.

SUMMARY:Arcana hosts a Book Signing with John Divola: SCAPES
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Sunday\, July 24th\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM for a book signing \nJohn Divola: SCAPES\nPlease join us Sunday\, July 24th between 4:00 and 6:00 PM to celebrate the arrival of Mr. Divola’s stunning new Skinnerboox publication. If you cannot attend but would like to purchase a signed copy\, please place your order here or call Arcana at 310-458-1499. \n“Cameras and their users are caught between the universal and the particular. Photography and photographs; humanity and whatever specific kind of human we happen to be. There is at least something existentially universal about John Divola’s photographic adventures. The lone observer moving through the world and reflecting upon it through various camera possibilities. But nobody is truly universal\, or only universal. We each come wrapped in our particulars\, just as each and every photograph belongs to the universe of photography precisely insofar as it is particular. Forever the two. When I look at Divola’s photographs\, I sense something universal because I sense all the particulars. Yes\, a white\, male\, middle class Southern Californian\, post-conceptual artist of the kind that makes these kinds of photographs. But nobody makes photographs quite like Divola. He is one of a kind\, and therein are the universal and the particular.” – David Campany from his text for “SCAPES”\, which contains selections from three of the photographer’s most celebrated bodies of early black and white work\, “Four Landscapes”\, “As Far As I Could Get”\, and “Dogs Chasing My Car in the Desert.”

SUMMARY:Arcana hosts a Book Signing with Arthur Grace – Communism(s): A Cold War Album
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Saturday\, June 11th\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM for a book signing \nArthur Grace: Communism(s): A Cold War Album\nFor most people in the West\, the realities of life behind the Iron Curtain have faded into caricatures of police state repression and bread lines. With the world seemingly again divided between democracies and authoritarian regimes\, it is essential that we understand the reality of life in the Soviet Bloc. Noted American photojournalist Arthur Grace was uniquely placed to provide that context. \nDuring the 1970s and 1980s Grace traveled extensively behind the Iron Curtain\, working primarily for news magazines. One of only a small corps of Western photographers with ongoing access\, he was able to delve into the most ordinary corners of people’s daily lives\, while also covering significant events. Many of the photographs in this remarkable book are effectively psychological portraits that leave the viewer with a sense of the gamut of emotions in that era. \nIllustrated with over one hundred and twenty black-and-white images – nearly all previously unpublished\, Communism(s) gives an unprecedented glimpse behind the veil of a not-so-distant time filled with harsh realities unseen by nearly all but those that lived through it. Shot in the USSR\, Poland\, Romania\, Yugoslavia and the German Democratic Republic\, here are portraits of factory workers\, farmers\, churchgoers\, vacationers and loitering teens juxtaposed with the GDR’s imposing Social Realist-designed apartment blocks\, annual May Day Parades\, Poland’s Solidarity movement (and the subsequent imposition of martial law) and the vastness of Moscow’s Red Square. \nBeautifully printed in Italy by publisher Damiani Editore\, Communism(s) was co-edited by Arthur Grace\, Arcana’s own Lee Kaplan\, and Deadbeat Club Press’ Clint Woodside\, who also contributed the book’s striking design. Read some of its impressive advance reviews from The New York Times\, Washington Post\, and The Sunday London Times\, and join us Saturday\, June 11th to acquire your own copy of this timely document signed by photographer Arthur Grace \nIf you cannot attend\, place an order here for your very own copy of Communism(s) signed by Arthur Grace to be picked up at the store or shipped to you after the event.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Senon Williams: Words Don't Mean Much
DESCRIPTION:Free\nPlease join us for a book signing at Arcana: Books on the Arts \nSenon Williams: Words Don’t Mean Much\nSaturday\, January 29th\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM \nArcana: Books on the Arts | 8675 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\, CA 90232 \nWe are delighted to invite you to a book signing celebrating Senon Williams’ new book\, Words Don’t Mean Much\, published by Hat & Beard Press. \nPlease come fully vaccinated\, wear your mask over your nose and mouth\, and maintain distance from others when possible! \nYou may pre-order a signed copy of the book to be picked up at the store or shipped to you after the event. PLEASE PLACE YOUR ORDER HERE! \nThe old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” is turned on its side in Words Don’t Mean Much\, Senon Williams’ new book of aphoristic phrasing. Far fewer words are needed to create an illuminating image in the mind’s eye\, conjuring immediate multi-sensory experiences. \nThis book of poems is derived from the text in Williams’ ink on paper drawings\, a sampling of which are pictured at left. The drawings are textual extractions and gather momentum within the book\, exhibiting great attention to materials and craftsmanship. Every detail\, from select paper to classic typeface\, has been considered. An object\, not unlike a sculpture\, can be viewed from all sides\, handled – and leafed through in the case of this book – front to back\, back to front\, or randomly opened. Words Don’t Mean Much is a small pocket book\, easy to conceal. A book to keep all to yourself or share intimately. \nNative to Los Angeles\, Senon Williams is a lifelong visual artist and musician. His longtime study of economy with words and multiple meanings centers on the desire to create glimpses into the inherent human struggle\, both ancient and contemporary. Williams’ work finds space in the natural – exposing outstanding and devastating stages of human evolution.

SUMMARY:Arcana Presents a Deanna Templeton Remote Book Signing for ”What She Said”
DESCRIPTION:Already a “Best of 2021” photobook\, Deanna Templeton’s truly excellent new MACK offering What She Said is now available! Arcana: Books on the Arts  hoped to have a real-life signing event for this launch\, but as we’re all still playing it safe\, Deanna will be specially personalizing copies with your choice of inscription (within reason of course) and a special rubber stamp created for the occasion. \nOrder by April 17th\, while supplies last! Order now on Arcana’s website here. \n“What She Said takes its title from a song by The Smiths: “What she said was sad / But then\, all the rejection she’s had / To pretend to be happy / Could only be idiocy. The work originates in portraits Deanna Templeton made on the streets of the US\, Europe\, Australia and Russia\, in which she captured women in their adolescence: punks and outcasts whose ripped jeans and tights\, tattoos\, and hairstyles stand as testament to this transitional moment in their lives as they navigate the intensity of teenage life. Templeton grew up in an ostensibly different environment in 1980s youth\, but she recognized in them something of the universality of female adolescence\, as they struggled with similar disappointments and challenges she encountered as a young woman. The book combines these modern portraits with gig flyers and Templeton’s own teenage journal entries from the mid to late 80s\, in which the familiar experience of growing up is laid bare in all its antagonism\, humor and pathos.”

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Bruce Licher\, Karen Nielsen Licher\, and SR2
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 7th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please stop by Arcana: Books on the Arts for a very special afternoon with Bruce Licher and Karen Nielsen Licher of Independent Project Press & Records as they celebrate the release of Savage Impressions with a book signing\, one-day exhibition and sale of printed matter\, and a musical performance at 5:00 PM sharp by SR2. \nSavage Impressions is the first extensive monograph on Bruce Licher’s Independent Project Records and Independent Project Press. With the current explosion of interest in letterpress\, many are looking to see how new work can be influenced by the past. Active since 1982\, Bruce Licher’s Independent Project Press is a contemporary studio that has bridged technological eras and produced an unparalleled body of work. It has culled from the past while simultaneously turning it on its head with a distinct visual vocabulary that continues to influence current aesthetics. \nFor the first time\, a comprehensive overview of Independent Project Records and Independent Project Press has been compiled into a monograph published by P22 Type Foundry\, produced in a quality that displays their  limited edition\, hand-made work in over 200 pages of full color\, from mechanical process work (for clients such as REM\, Stereolab\, and Camper Van Beethoven) to finished works of art with insights into the creative process along the way. The text includes an essay by Karen Nielsen Licher as well as material from Rudy Vanderlans’ Emigre magazine that featured the work of IPR & P. Co-designed by Bruce Licher and Jim Greishaber at P22\, Savage Impressions is a 12 x 12-inch hardcover book that displays in full color the diverse range of art and design produced by Independent Project Records & Press. \nThis first printing is an edition of one thousand copies\, with three-hundred and fifty of those being a now-sold out Deluxe Edition that includes a 12” vinyl record and other letterpress-printed ephemera. This book is a profound reminder of the value of the hand-made and how it can interface with the mass-produced. It will stand as major documentation of one of the most influential letterpress studios currently in existence.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Meet + Greet with Ryan Mungia
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 15th from 4:00 and 6:00 PM. stop in Arcana: Books on the Arts to meet and greet Ryan Mungia and celebrate the publication of his excellent Hat & Beard Press book\, Do You Compute? – Selling Tech From the Atomic Age to the Y2K Bug\, 1950-1999. \n“Before Alexa and the iPhone\, there was the large and unwieldy mainframe computer. In the postwar 1950s\, computers were mostly used for aerospace and accounting purposes. To the public at large\, they were on a rung that existed somewhere between engineering and science fiction. Magazine ads and marketing brochures were designed to create a fantasy surrounding these machines for prospective clients: Higher profit margins! Creativity unleashed! Total automation! With the invention of the microchip in the 1970s came the PC and video games\, which shifted the target of computer advertising from corporations to the individual. By the end of the millennium\, the notion of selling tech burst wide open to include robots\, cell phones\, blogs\, online dating services\, and much\, much more. \n‘Do You Compute?‘ is a broad survey featuring the very best of computer advertising in the 20th century. From the Atomic Age to the Y2K bug\, this volume presents a connoisseur’s selection of graphic gems culled from museums\, university archives\, and private collections to illustrate the evolution of the computer from its early days as a hulking piece of machinery to its current state as a handheld device. Accompanied by two essays – one by cultural anthropologist Ryan Mungia and the other by graphic design historian Steven Heller – and including five different decade-long timelines that highlight some of the most influential moments in computer history\, this fun yet meaningful volume is a unique look at the computer and how it has shaped our world.”

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Meet & Greet with Photographer Mark Steinmetz
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 18th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts to meet and greet photographer Mark Steinmetz.  Hot off The Nazraeli Press\, this latest monograph of his work\, MARK STEINMETZ: SUMMER CAMP\, is a collection of photographs that captures the spirit of youth during trips spent away at a summer camp. \n“Two projects I focused on were little league baseball – which became 2015’s The Players – and summer camps. Every year\, from spring into summer\, one would lead into another and certain things never changed… At summer camp\, you have sleeping bags\, cabins\, and campers. There isn’t much difference between them in 1990 or 1965. I like that time of age\, too. There’s a kind of grave maturity developing at around eleven years old. When a little kid laughs or cries\, it doesn’t have real resonance\, whereas if someone has these emotions between eight and twelve\, there’s a poignancy to it. When they become adults\, it’s just not the same. Many of these photos are about the predicament of being a kid put into a certain situation. In one picture\, these girls who have been so horrible to each other all summer are now parting – and the depth of their love just gushes out. It’s almost excruciating…” – Mark Steinmetz\, for Huck Magazine

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Photographer Melba Levick and Author Ruben G. Mendoza
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 14th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts for a book signing with photographer Melba Levick and author Ruben G. Mendoza for the release of Mission San Miguel Arcángel published by Nazraeli Press. \n“Mission San Miguel Arcángel was founded on July 25\, 1797 in what is now California’s Central Coast. The site was chosen in part because of the large number of Salinan Indians that inhabited the area\, whom the Spanish priests wanted to evangelize. Unlike most of the other missions in California\, Mission San Miguel’s appearance is much the same as it was when founded. The inside has never been repainted; the pictures and the colors decorating the six-food thick adobe walls are the originals that were created and painted by Indian artisans under the direction of Esteban Munras of Catalonia\, Spain. \nThe physical beauty of the structures and gardens is unparalleled\, but among California’s twenty-one Spanish missions\, San Miguel is in many ways considered to be the “poor stepson” of the chain\, and has until now been lacking a dedicated book. As it is only a short distance from Nazraeli Press’ editorial office and olive farm\, we are therefore especially pleased to announce this book\, dedicated to the history and present state of Mission San Miguel. \nWith over fifty photographic books to her credit\, Melba Levick is well known for her work as an architectural and travel photographer. Her photographs have been published and exhibited across North America and Europe for over thirty years\, ranging in subject matter from California ranches and Spanish-style homes\, to Antonio Gaudi in Barcelona\, Mexican gardens\, and the colors of India. Ruben G. Mendoza is an archaeologist\, author\, photographer\, and founding faculty member of California State University\, Monterey Bay.”

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Book Signing Celebrating Todd Hido
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, December 7th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts to celebrate master publisher Nazraeli Press‘ remastered edition of Todd Hido’s iconic and highly sought-after first monograph\, House Hunting. \nTo celebrate the upcoming twentieth anniversary of this important book\, Nazraeli has collaborated closely with the artist to achieve a new impression of the highest possible fidelity. Printed on heavy weight matte art paper\, using cutting-edge technologies in both the pre-press and production phases\, this new edition stays true to the original design and format while delivering even more accurate color rendition and nuances in tone and saturation. It will be a welcome addition to collections lacking access to the very scarce original printings; and to those fortunate enough to own a copy of the original edition\, it further illuminates the images themselves that first catapulted the artist and his first monograph to fame. \n“Todd Hido’s large color photographs of suburbia are lonely\, forlorn\, mysterious… and strangely comforting. Hido photographs the interior rooms of repossessed tract homes\, and the outsides of similar houses at night whose habitation is suggested by the glow of a television set or unseen overhead bulb. Seldom does the similar evoke such melancholy. Yet rather than passing judgment on his anonymous subjects\, Hido manages to turn the banal into something beautiful\, imbuing his prints of interiors with soft pastels\, and allowing the exteriors to glow in the cool evening air.”

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Hosts a Book Signing With Legendary Photographer Hugh Holland
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, November 23rd from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in celebrating photographer Hugh Holland’s latest release\, Silver. Skate. Seventies\, chronicling the local skate scene of the 1970s. And as a bonus\, Arcana Books will be debuting the release of two brand new WAX Posters featuring Holland’s iconic images of youthful four-wheeled abandon. \nIn the 1970s\, photographer Hugh Holland masterfully captured the burgeoning culture of skateboarding against a sometimes harsh but always sunny Southern California landscape. This never-before-published collection showcases his black-and-white photographs that document young skateboarders sidewalk surfing off Mulholland Drive in concrete drainage ditches and empty swimming pools in a drought-ridden Southern California. From suburban backyard haunts to the asphalt streets that connected them\, this was the place that inspired the legendary Dogtown and Z-Boys skateboarders. With their requisite bleached-blond hair\, tanned bodies\, tube socks and Vans\, these young outsiders evoke the sometimes reckless but always exhilarating origins of skateboarding lifestyle and culture.

SUMMARY:Arcana Books Welcomes Architects Marmol Radziner
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Saturday\, November 9th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm\, please join Arcana: Books on the Arts in welcoming Leo Marmol\, Ron Radziner and Mayer Rus for a book signing and discussion of their new release\, Site: Marmol Radziner in the Landscape.  \nCombining style with substance\, this lavish monograph from Princeton Architectural Press is an engaging document of nineteen homes drawn from twenty years of work. For the event principal partners Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner – who maintain an envious reference library\, even by Arcana’s standards – will discuss the firm’s history and projects\, and the making of their new book with the West Coast editor of AD\, critic and historian Mayer Rus. \nThe spectacular houses of Marmol Radziner merge interior and exterior life as they engage the built and natural environment. With lush photography and an expansive format\, Site: Marmol Radziner in the Landscape focuses on the evolving relationship between house and landscape\, revealing what the architects describe as “the gradual erasure of boundaries between indoor and outdoor” spaces. \nThis collection of nineteen houses\, shown in over two-hundred full-color photographs that will make readers swoon\, is organized by habitat – desert\, urban\, canyon\, and woodland – and includes projects in Southern California\, Arizona\, Utah\, Nevada\, and the Netherlands. A foreword by novelist Mona Simpson provides a personal reflection on her experiences in a Marmol Radziner house\, while an interview with partners Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner and detailed descriptions of their projects offer insights into the architects’ philosophy and process.
