SUMMARY:WUF Hosts the 2025 California Legislative Roundup
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 16 from 7:45 am to 9:30 am\, Westside Urban Forum hosts the 2025 California Legislature Roundup: Insights into Sacramento breakfast panel discussion. \nIn recent years\, the California legislature has been at the forefront of shaping land use\, housing\, and environmental policy through state law\, taking increasingly bold steps to address the housing crisis and related urban challenges. The 2025 session continued this trend\, advancing a suite of consequential bills on housing production\, land use reform\, and environmental protections—many of which are now before Governor Newsom for signature or veto by the October 12 deadline. \nThe 2025 legislative session produced headline-grabbing housing bills and significant shifts in climate policy. AB 130\, signed in June\, streamlines CEQA review for infill housing projects; it also places a six-year moratorium on new residential building code changes. SB 79\, pending the governor’s signature\, would legalize more multifamily housing near transit. On the climate side\, lawmakers extended the state’s Cap & Invest program through 2046\, and advanced a package of wildfire measures—including $18 billion in new utility wildfire funding and stronger zone zero regulations. \nJoin WUF for an engaging and informative panel discussion to review the significant legislation passed—and not passed—in the 2025 session. The panel will break down the key takeaways\, analyze the likely impacts on Los Angeles and the wider region\, and provide valuable insights for government officials\, urban planners\, developers\, and community advocates alike. \nModerator\nLauren Chang\, Partner\, Sheppard Mullin \nPanelists\nJesse Zwick\, Southern California Director\, Housing Action Coalition / Councilmember\, City of Santa Monica\nMahdi Manji\, Director of Public Policy\,\nInner City Law Center\nMichael Rochmes\, Policy & Advocacy Coordinator\,\nUS Green Building Council California \nEvent Time\n7:45 am – 9:30 am\n7:45 am – Registration & Light Breakfast\n8:30 am – Panel Discussion\nLocation \nMember Tickets: $25\nNon-Member Tickets: $60 \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n WUF MEMBER TICKETS\n \n \n	\n \n NON-MEMBER TICKETS\n \n \n \n\n \n	\n \n \nDirections\nAvoid the stress of rush hour and skip traffic! SUMMARY:Designing Togetherness: Sport by Design
DESCRIPTION:As Los Angeles prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games\, we welcome Paris-based designer Gabriel Fontana in conversation with Frances Anderton for an evening on how design can redefine sport to foster inclusivity\, empathy\, solidarity\, and accessibility. \nDrawing on Gabriel’s acclaimed project Multiform—the first queer sport to enter MoMA’s collection—this conversation will explore how sport can be reshaped to reflect the values of today’s generation: mental well-being\, fluid identity\, and social justice. At a time when many sports remain largely unchanged since the first modern Olympics in 1896\, they will discuss how design can challenge tradition and create more inclusive\, relevant\, and transformative experiences. \nThis event is co-curated by Villa Albertine and the Los Angeles Design Festival\, with the support from Helms Design District. \nValet parking for guests is available at 8723 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\, inside the interior parking garage adjacent to the event venue.  \nPhoto by Giacomo Bianco \n\n \n \n \n	\n \n GET TICKETS\n \n \n \n\n \n	\n \n \nABOUT GABRIEL \nGabriel Fontana is a Paris-based designer and current resident of the Villa Albertine of Los Angeles. He is known for his innovative approach to social design\, focusing on reshaping society through the creation of new sports games tailored for today’s world. Gabriel has received international acclaim in the fields of education\, culture\, and the sports industry. His games have been integrated into school programs across Europe\, showcased at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and recently entered MoMA permanent collection. He curated the Dutch Pavilion for the Venice Architecture Biennale this year. \nABOUT FRANCES \nFrances Anderton is a writer\, broadcaster\, and curator\, known for her deep expertise in Los Angeles’ built environment. She is the author of the book Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles and previously spent many years as the host of KCRW’s DnA: Design and Architecture. She recently collaborated with Friends of Residential Treasures Los Angeles (FORT: LA) on an installation for the US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2025\, illustrating the theme PORCH: An Architecture of Generosity. Honors include the Esther McCoy Award\, from the USC Architectural Guild\, for her work educating the public about architecture and urbanism.

LGLA helmed the landscape restoration of the landmark Hindry House and recently completed the renovation of the landscape for a 1910 Sylvanus Marston Craftsman home\, both in the Prospect Park neighborhood of Pasadena\, California. LGLA has long promoted sustainable and regionally appropriate solutions to projects regardless of complexity or scale. Designs evolve from a respect for cultural and historical contexts and reflect the qualities of the site and client goals.

SUMMARY:Architecture: Rebuilding Value
DESCRIPTION:Making a hasty move to “build together” cookie-cutter Mediterranean-\, Craftsman-\, Ranch-\, or Colonial-style houses can’t be undone and will change the very fabric that makes Los Angeles wonderful! In the aftermath of one of the worst devastations in Los Angeles’ history\, a panel of renowned professionals in architecture\, construction\, and real estate will come together at the Helms Design Center on Thursday\, April 10th\, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm to discuss the present opportunity to rebuild our communities with lasting beauty\, value\, and sustainability. \nLooking at the past to rethink the future\, this panel talk — Architecture: Rebuilding Value — will reflect on the Berkeley-Oakland fire of 1991 as a starting point to move past the impulse to reconstruct mass-produced tract houses. Instead\, we will focus on creating cost-effective\, artistic\, and sustainable designs that not only preserve our environment but also enhance our local culture\, community\, and quality of life for generations to come. \nHelms Design Center        \n8745 Washington Blvd.\, Culver City\, CA 90232 \nReception: 6:00 pm\nPresentations: 6:30 pm\nQ&A: immediately following \nSorry\, this event has reached capacity. Imaginative and ambitious\, the projects reveal the incredible diversity of ideas that have emerged from the world’s most influential architects—and many you’ve never heard of. Spanning nearly 80 countries\, the book presents concepts for projects of all types: museums\, art galleries\, cemeteries\, churches\, bridges\, skyscrapers\, hotels\, theme parks\, casinos\, opera houses\, government buildings\, and even a floating theatre boat that resembles a UFO. Seen together\, the projects conjure a strange and wonderful new world while simultaneously offering insight into how architectural projects have been conceived and developed (and dashed) over the last 100 years. The book also includes previously unpublished prints\, paintings\, drawings\, etchings\, preparatory sketches\, and images that bring these alternate histories to life. \nSam Lubell is Editor at Large at Metropolis. He has written more than ten books about architecture for Phaidon\, Rizzoli\, The Monacelli Press\, Metropolis Books\, and Oro Editions. He writes for The New York Times\, The Los Angeles Times\, Fast Company\, Architectural Digest\, Wallpaper\, Dwell\, Architect Magazine\, and other publications. He resides in Los Angeles where he continues a family tradition of being a thorn in the side of the rich and powerful. \nFrances Anderton covers Los Angeles design and architecture in print\, broadcast media and public events. She is the author of Common Ground: Multifamily Housing in Los Angeles\, which won the 2022 Gold award for best Regional Nonfiction from Foreword Reviews. SUMMARY:Join Westside Urban Forum for Light Bites + Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Adaptive Reuse: Can It Save Post-Pandemic Los Angeles?\n7:45 am – 9:30 am\n7:45 am – Registration & Light Breakfast\n8:15 am – Panel Discussion \nMEMBERS REGISTER HERE\nGUESTS REGISTER HERE\nFour years after the onset of the pandemic and the resulting work-from-home trend\, the office market in Los Angeles continues to experience significant challenges with increased vacancy\, sluggish leasing\, and financially burdened ownership. This market disruption has hollowed out many commercial centers that were traditionally reliant on office workers\, resulting in decreased foot traffic and the shuttering of restaurant and retail establishments. Many policy experts have suggested that the rejuvenation of commercial centers requires the reinvention of office centers into mixed-use districts with round-the-clock activation. \nIn order to achieve this\, it has been suggested that lightly used office buildings could be converted into residential space\, providing a much-needed boost in activity. In response\, the City of Los Angeles has released a proposed Adaptive Reuse Ordinance that is intended to encourage these conversions. A similar measure was adopted in Downtown Los Angeles and helped to usher in the boom of residential development that occurred in the neighborhood in the ensuing two decades. However\, few office-to-residential conversions have been successfully executed in recent years\, and experts in the field have commented that there are significant financial\, engineering\, and policy challenges that stand in the way of a meaningful wave of residential conversions. \nDoes the City’s proposed ordinance do enough to overcome these challenges? Are there other converted uses that have a higher chance of success? And how does the environmental benefit of preserving the embodied carbon in existing office buildings come into play? \nJoin the Westside Urban Forum as a panel of experts in the development\, design\, and public policy fields break down these complex issues. This event aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and opportunities of office conversion while discussing the path forward for conversion. \nModerator\nAdrian Scott Fine – President and CEO\, Los Angeles Conservancy \nPanelists\nHolly Harper\, AIA – Planning Assistant\, Urban Design Studio\, Los Angeles City Planning\nMatthew Wister – Studio Director/Senior Associate\, Studio One Eleven\nRachelle Habchi\, M.S.\, P.E. – Project Engineer & Director of Sustainability\, Glotman Simpson Structural Engineers \nRegistration Fees\n$50 Members\n$65 Non-Members\n$10 Student Members & Retired Members\n$15 Student Non-Members & Retired Non-Members \nPre-registration closes on Wednesday\, May 15th.
