They founded the practice in Bangkok (2013) and have been based in London and Spain since 2016. Space Popular creates spaces\, objects\, and events in both physical and virtual space\, concentrating on how the two realms can blend together. The studio has completed buildings\, exhibitions\, public artworks\, furniture collections\, and interiors across Asia and Europe\, as well as virtual architecture for the immersive internet. Clients\, collaborators\, and commissioners include national institutions such as MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Art\, Rome\, Italy; The Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design –ArkDes\, Stockholm\, Sweden; Royal Institute of British Architects\, London\, UK; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art\, Seoul\, South Korea; as well as independent galleries such as MAGAZIN\, Vienna\, Austria; and Sto Werkstatt\, London\, UK. \nLesmes and Hellberg both have extensive academic experience having taught architectural design studio since 2011\, first at INDA\, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok from 2011 to 2016\, at the Architectural Association in London from 2016 to 2021\, and currently at Daniels\, Faculty of Architecture\, University of Toronto since 2020\, and UCLA Architecture and Urban Design since 2022. The exhibition’s relevancy is expansive. As migration from Asia continues worldwide and economic connections deepen\, the influence of the diaspora is being experienced globally\, whether in Los Angeles\, Berlin\, or Sao Paulo. By exploring this exponential growth and its impact worldwide\, deCoding Asian Urbanism seeks to stimulate a dialogue between policymakers\, designers\, and public officials shaping cities in today’s multilayered paradigm. \nThe project’s decade-long effort and research are memorialized in an accompanying 458-page publication that includes the work of prominent sociologists\, architects\, historians\, urban designers\, and activists from across the globe\, each providing a unique perspective on the complexity of the contemporary city. Extensively illustrated with project images\, analytical diagrams\, maps\, and selected photographs\, it includes excerpts of spirited panel discussions from a symposium at Harvard University. \nThe project is curated by British historian Professor Kenneth Frampton\, Malaysian ecologist and architect Ken Yeang\, and Los Angeles-based urban designer Farooq Ameen. It builds on multi-year collaborations with the Art Center College of Design\, the Bengal Foundation\, and Harvard University. The exhibition is made possible by the very generous support of Walter N. Marks\, Inc. and the Helms Bakery District. A+D is also indebted to Swinerton Builders\, Crisp Imaging\, City Design Studio\, Francis Krahe & Associates\, S2N Technology Group\, and others who partnered with the institution to realize the show’s installation. \nThose who provide proof of vaccination may join us without a mask.

SoCalNOMA’s mission is to increase the diversity\, equity\, and inclusion of the architecture profession\, to support our members to amplify their voices and expand their connections to the Southern California community at large\, and to increase the pipeline of diverse architects entering the profession in the future. \nThe works in the exhibition represent a sampling of the tremendous contributions of minority architects and designers to the built environment here in Los Angeles and beyond. Works presented encompass designs of all scales from single family residential\, to commercial\, and urban planning. Most artists are not blessed with such creative clarity. Rather\, they discover their work – art\, design\, writing\, music – as they make it. \nIn his new book\, Make To Know\, Lorne M. Buchman\, president of ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena\, draws from interviews with artists\, entrepreneurs\, innovators and designers—Chris Kraus\, Frank Gehry\, Zack Snyder\, Aimee Bender\, Diana Thater\, and many others–to demonstrate that creativity is almost always a process\, not a lightbulb moment\, that creative geniuses are truly few\, and that everyone from students to professionals can “make to know” their own ability to create. \n​​“This is a book of stories of writers filling blank sheets of paper\, designers solving complex problems\, installation artists engaging space and materials\, and musicians and actors improvising composition and performance. DESCRIPTION:Textile Arts | Los Angeles invites you to Meditative Block Printing with Dusty Guerra
 \nSunday\, September 19th\, 10 am – 4 pm\, at the Helms Design Center \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn an alternative approach to relief printmaking utilizing a press-less printing method while discovering a repetitive process that will calm the mind and enrich a creative outlet. You will explore and develop your own motifs\, either from imagination or in reference to cultural narratives. Learn to work with alternative materials and techniques to design\, transfer\, carve\, register\, print\, and clean up. You will engage in a studio practice that will emphasize textile printing and pattern making. \nThere will be opportunity to explore and experiment as a way to develop a series of design networks. The motifs will first be test printed on cotton rag paper and once further developed\, the patterns may then be printed onto fabric (Participants are welcome to bring personal garments and pre-washed fabrics to be printed on). We will be using traditional printmaking inks and learn the basics of preparing ink and charging brayers for inking of the blocks — as well as how to efficiently clean up/conserve materials as a way to learn proper printmaking etiquette. \nDusty Guerra is a Xicano artist\, printmaker\, and educator based in Southern California. As a first generation artist\, Guerra explores family heritage and traditions to further investigate the origins of his Mexicanidad. Guerra’s art practice is managing the creation of a non-verbal\, spiritual language of symbols and motifs rooted in native belief systems and histories of migration. SADLY\, THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED AND WE HOPE TO RESCHEDULE IN THE FUTURE. \nTextile Arts | Los Angeles invites you to Crafting Bokjumeoni \nSaturday\, September 11th\, 2 – 4 pm at the Helms Design Center \nYou may have wondered about the small\, colorful bags you see in museums\, and carried by ladies wearing hanbok\, a traditional Korean garment. The bags are called bokjumeoni (복주머니)\, translated as a lucky pouch. \nHanbok is a colorful and elegant type of Korean formal clothing worn for special occasions. It is beautiful\, but lacks pockets\, which led to the creation of bokjumeoni\, a drawstring pouch. Bokjumeoni are made of the same material and colors as hanbok\, and they are believed to bring the holder good fortune. Today\, bokjumeoni are often used as a bag for small presents given to friends and loved ones. \nIn this workshop Dong Kyu will teach participants how to make their own bokjumeoni. We will provide all the necessary materials\, including colorful fabric pre-cut in the shape of the pouch. Participants will learn about the history of the bokjumeoni and its use in Korea from the past until the present day. Students will sew the pieces of fabric together to create a small drawstring pouch. \nNo experience is necessary\, although participants should be comfortable handling a needle and thread. \nClass fee $45 includes all materials. \nMORE INFO

For the past year\, architects and builders have been busy\, working on designs to address L.A.’s biggest need: Housing. And they are doing so in multi-unit buildings\, at multiple scales\, that advance the idea of home. \n30+ design teams will display Low Rise dwellings from ADUs to four-story multifamily dwellings; Mid Rise affordable and market rate housing on transit corridors; High Rise towers for downtown\, Hollywood and the Miracle Mile.  The show is presented by Helms Bakery District in partnership with Cal Poly\, San Luis Obispo LA Metro Program. It is organized by Frances Anderton and Stephen Phillips (Director\, Cal Poly LA Metro). \nWHAT: \nMuch of the public dialogue around housing in Los Angeles today has to do with the politics around it\, and the crisis of homelessness. But while these debates continue\, housing is being built\, in a patchwork of starkly different scales and styles. It is shaped in part by zoning\, code\, and parking requirements\, costly land\, construction and materials\, as well as competing development and neighborhood pressures. Yet despite this web of constraints\, designers are building on the tradition of innovative SoCal living. \nAt Low Rise\, Mid Rise\, High Rise: Housing in L.A. Today visitors will see dense\, high\, multi-unit housing with apartments filled with natural light\, flowing space and a taste of the outside. Projects will demonstrate planning for sociability\, as well as new material and structural solutions to housing affordability. They will show how new developments can still express the distinct and eclectic Los Angeles character. Finally\, visitors will see how the pandemic may have altered planning priorities in the homes of tomorrow. The exhibition will feature models and renderings of projects in design or under construction. Wright and Frances Anderton where we will talk about Treehouse Hollywood\, the rollout of more locations and future concepts for multifamily living. \nSharing the stage with Walker will be Treehouse resident Jason E.C. Wright\, founder of Burntsienna Research Society\, a design research consultancy. Wright will talk about his experience building “family” at Treehouse during the pandemic\, and will answer your questions about what it’s like to share a house with 60 people! \nWalker will also talk about how growing up in public housing informed his thinking about residential design\, and his work on the redesign of Jordan Downs\, the public housing apartment complex in Watts\, Los Angeles\, currently undergoing a $1 billion redevelopment. \nTreehouse Koreatown is currently on display at Low Rise\, Mid Rise\, High: Housing in LA Today inside the Helms Design Center. It is designed by The California Office with creative direction by Sean Knibb. \n \nABOUT PROPHET\nProphet Walker\, Co-Founder and CEO of Treehouse\, grew up in South LA\, where amidst poverty\, violence\, and homelessness in his neighborhood\, community was always at its core. \nProphet is deeply involved with both criminal justice and education reform and served on multiple non-profit and civic boards. In 2014\, Prophet ran for the California State Assembly\, coming in second. This passion for reform was triggered by his personal experience of being incarcerated at 16 and sentenced to spend six years within an adult prison. While incarcerated\, he started a state-wide program that allowed inmates to earn a two-year college degree\, and today thousands of inmates participate in the program. Prophet was one of the program’s first graduates to come home and he attended Loyola Marymount University\, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering. In 2015\, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama invited Prophet to attend the State of the Union to honor his efforts to reform our criminal justice system and for his commitment to our children. \nProphet’s experiences surrounding community strength and human connectedness inspired him to create Treehouse\, recognizing the power of community in proximity and shared humanity. Prophet leads the company day to day\, with a focus on acquisitions research\, property selection\, and investor relations. \n \nABOUT JASON \nJason E.C. Wright is the Founder of Burntsienna Research Society\, a critical-thinking research consultancy for design histories\, intangible culture\, and reference materials. Jason is Indiana born and raised\, who now considers Los Angeles home. Jason is an accomplished designer\, researcher\, writer\, with 20+ years as a retail and fashion professional\, who takes his love of books seriously\, serving as librarian-in-residence at home in Treehouse Hollywood.

DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO AN UNDETERMINED FUTURE DATE.\nOn Wednesday\, March 25th from 7:30 to 9:00 pm (Doors at 7:00 pm)\, please join us in welcoming Textile Arts Los Angeles and Christopher Bardt\, AIA for practiceLAB\, a conversation and in-depth exploration of the interaction between mind and material world\, mediated by language\, image\, and making—in design\, the arts\, culture\, and science. \nIn Material and Mind\, Christopher Bardt delves deeply into the interaction of mind and material world\, mediated by language\, image\, and the process of making. He examines thought not as something “pure” and autonomous but as emerging from working with material\, and he identifies this as the source of imagination and creative insight. This takes place as much in such disciplines as cognitive science\, anthropology\, and poetry as it does in the more obvious painting\, sculpture\, and design. In some fields\, the medium of work is\, in fact\, the very medium of thinking—as fabric is for the tailor. \nDrawing on the philosophical notions of the “extended mind” and the “enactive mind\,” and looking beyond the world of material-based arts\, Bardt investigates the realms in which material and mind interweave through metaphor\, representation\, projection\, analogues\, tools\, and models. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR  \nChristopher Bardt has over 25 years of experience as an architect and professor of architecture at RISD. He is a founding principal of 3sixØ Architecture\, which Architectural Record named one of 10 leading vanguard firms worldwide in 2002. His extensive professional experience includes furniture design\, residential\, commercial and institutional commissions and planning studies\, ranging from small urban interventions to large-scale metropolitan development. Bardt has been a member of the Architecture faculty at RISD since 1988. He has been a visiting professor at Cornell University\, the National Academy of Design and Art\, Slovakia and the China Academy of Art and has served on the Board of Governors of the RISD Museum. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO AN UNDETERMINED FUTURE DATE. \nOn Wednesday\, March 18th from 7:30 to 9:00 am\, please join us in welcoming Urban Land Institure for the ULI Los Angeles StimULI Breakfast discussion\, From Urban Shopping Mall to Tech Campus: The Creative Office Conversion of Westside Pavilion. \nAs big-box retail centers decline\, developers are finding creative ways to repurpose large blocks of space to accommodate a new era. In 2018\, a joint venture between Macerich and Hudson Pacific Properties announced plans to redevelop the declining Westside Pavilion into creative office space. The following year\, tech giant Google pre-leased the entirety of the office space totaling nearly 600\,000 square feet\, further expanding their Los Angeles footprint. \nThe panel will explore the first-of-its-kind conversion of urban mall to creative office\, providing insights into innovative adaptive reuse strategies. SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Play! A Screen Print Weekend with Carrie Burckle\, Inspired by Sarajo Frieden
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO AN UNDETERMINED FUTURE DATE. \nOn Saturday and Sunday\, March 14th and 15th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm\, please join us in hosting Textile Arts LA’s Carrie Burckle for a weekend-long screen printing workshop where you’ll explore chance and improvisation as playful strategies incorporating collage\, stamping\, cut outs\, and painting for designing prints. \nYou will discover relationships in line\, shape and color as your shapes and patterns unfold\, meander and snake back in on themselves\, creating new relationships and connections. You may explore mono prints\, cutout shapes\, appliqué ideas\, and more.  Sister Corita Kent says\,  “Consider/regard everything an experiment”. And “Nothing is a mistake”. \nThe weekend will be an immersion in play\, in freeing up blocked energy and exploring intuition and improvisational strategies.  Students will create stencils for mono printing and over printing onto any cloth scraps\, up cycled clothes\, misshapen cuts\, for use singularly or for extended quilts\, patchwork\, appliqué etc.  There are no preconceived outcomes\, only potential for further investigations. One exercise will include a print exchange\, where each student will receive a print from each of the other students\, creating an overprinted\, collage piece. \nFOR TICKETS \nWear comfortable clothing\, shoes\, and an apron. You will be standing on a concrete floor when printing. Comfortable shoes are a must. \n*We will take a lunch break: students are welcome to step outside for a quick walk to The Co-Op Market / Deli or one of the restaurants in the Helms Complex\, or bring your own lunch. \nThis class is intended for fine artists\, designers\, painters\, printmakers\, surface designers and general enthusiasts. Class size limited to 10. Students of all levels welcome. \nMATERIALS PROVIDED FOR USE: Small handheld screens\, inks\, squeegees/spreaders\, plastic sheet stencils\, several cotton fabrics\, including the fabric intended for the shared overprinting exercise. We encourage you to bring your own pre-laundered natural fiber fabrics\, patches\, off cuts or clothing\, as this practice lends itself well to piece work / collage. Printing tables are 4ft x 8ft\, with some of the 8 ft length used for material prep. $25 material fee payable to instructor at the class\, please! \nCarrie Burckle is an artist\, designer\, and educator.
