 \nSunday\, September 19th\, 10 am – 4 pm\, at the Helms Design Center \nIn this workshop\, participants will learn an alternative approach to relief printmaking utilizing a press-less printing method while discovering a repetitive process that will calm the mind and enrich a creative outlet. You will explore and develop your own motifs\, either from imagination or in reference to cultural narratives. Learn to work with alternative materials and techniques to design\, transfer\, carve\, register\, print\, and clean up. You will engage in a studio practice that will emphasize textile printing and pattern making. \nThere will be opportunity to explore and experiment as a way to develop a series of design networks. The motifs will first be test printed on cotton rag paper and once further developed\, the patterns may then be printed onto fabric (Participants are welcome to bring personal garments and pre-washed fabrics to be printed on). We will be using traditional printmaking inks and learn the basics of preparing ink and charging brayers for inking of the blocks — as well as how to efficiently clean up/conserve materials as a way to learn proper printmaking etiquette. \nDusty Guerra is a Xicano artist\, printmaker\, and educator based in Southern California. As a first generation artist\, Guerra explores family heritage and traditions to further investigate the origins of his Mexicanidad. The bags are called bokjumeoni (복주머니)\, translated as a lucky pouch. \nHanbok is a colorful and elegant type of Korean formal clothing worn for special occasions. It is beautiful\, but lacks pockets\, which led to the creation of bokjumeoni\, a drawstring pouch. Bokjumeoni are made of the same material and colors as hanbok\, and they are believed to bring the holder good fortune. Today\, bokjumeoni are often used as a bag for small presents given to friends and loved ones. \nIn this workshop Dong Kyu will teach participants how to make their own bokjumeoni. We will provide all the necessary materials\, including colorful fabric pre-cut in the shape of the pouch. Participants will learn about the history of the bokjumeoni and its use in Korea from the past until the present day. In 2014\, Prophet ran for the California State Assembly\, coming in second. This passion for reform was triggered by his personal experience of being incarcerated at 16 and sentenced to spend six years within an adult prison. Early in his career\, Jimenez Lai lived and worked in a desert shelter at Taliesin and resided in a shipping container at Atelier Van Lieshout on the piers of Rotterdam. Before founding Bureau Spectacular\, Lai worked for various international offices\, including MOS and OMA. Lai is widely exhibited and published around the world\, including the MoMA- collected White Elephant. His first book\, Citizens of No Place\, was published by Princeton Architectural Press with a grant from the Graham Foundation. Draft II of this book has been archived at the New Museum as a part of the show Younger Than Jesus. Lai has won various awards\, including the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Debut Award at the Lisbon Triennale\, and the 2017 Designer of the Future Award at Art Basel / Design Miami. This workshop is perfect for artists and enthusiasts looking for a basis in understanding how to create dimensional form\, play with unconventional materials\, and investigate how form and material can be combined for creative and functional use. \nMaterials supplied by the instructor are twine\, reeds\, wire\, natural fibers and fabric.  This is a great technique to combine with other basketry  and weaving methods. \nPolly Jacobs Giacchina had an introduction to fiber with 2 diverse views.  Studying at San Diego State University with Joan Austin and independently exploring natural materials with Misti Washington in Solana Beach CA started a unique lifestyle of discovery. Discover why humans first twisted fibers into thread\, and how this invention revolutionized early cultures. Track the history of flax\, wool\, silk and cotton in the ancient world\, view textiles through Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs\, and explore how string and textiles are woven into language and identity. We’ll follow the presentation with a hands-on exercise where participants will ply their own string and make their own cloth – and in the process discover why using the fiber arts as a vehicle for self-discovery and innovation is so satisfying. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nCameron Taylor-Brown was introduced to textiles by artist Ed Rossbach at UC Berkeley\, studied design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (PCT&S) and worked as a fabric stylist in New York. She subsequently taught textile design and worked as an exhibition curator at PCT&S. Since 1985\, Taylor-Brown has lived in Los Angeles\, where she founded ARTSgarage\, a textile resource center. Please join this lively presentation and discussion showcasing how three artists are responding. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \n \nRenae Barnard is a multi-disciplinary artist interested in exploring the network of interactions between environment\, perception\, and well-being. Using found materials and waste from the furniture manufacturing industry\, Barnard received her Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University and her BA from California State University\, Los Angeles. Barnard has recently completed projects in cooperation with the National Immigration Law Center and the City of Santa Monica Department of Cultural Affairs. She is a recipient of the Sue Arlen Walker and Harvey M. Parker Memorial Fellowship\, the Armory Center for the Arts Teaching Artist Fellowship\, The Ahmanson Annual Fellowship\, Lincoln Fellowship Award\, and Christopher Street West Art and Culture Grant. \n \nChuck Hohng is a Korean American artist\, born in Long Beach California. Chuck spent fourteen years of his early life in his family’s native South Korea. He received his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Art Center College of Design. His early childhood exposure to Catholic practice and a bicultural household furthered interests in vanitas\, identities\, symbols\, and rituals. Chuck makes a range of fiber artworks from teddy bears to haute couture hanbok. Exploring salvaged textiles connections to love and loss\, Chuck’s artworks give a physical body to intellectual and emotional experiences. He believes we can always grow out of the mud\, lift ourselves above the murky water and bloom. \n \nAneesa Shami received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in both Fiber and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute. Aneesa’s work speaks to a broader understanding that we are all fundamentally human. She tries to utilize universal themes that are inclusive\, referencing the sublime\, and an otherworldly sense of the human conscious and subconscious. A love for repetitive mark-making drives her practice. Multiple strands of yarn\, strips of felt\, and even pen strokes build depth and density in each piece. Layers of material and process combine to lend the impression that there is more than what the eye sees. She recently completed a residency at the Helms Design Center\, is currently researching textile and fiber history and is completing large sculptural pieces in her current body of work\, Syndication.
