JOIN US for a swap-barter-giveaway. \nAll materials welcome: fabric\, tools and equipment\, notions\, samples\, paints\, adhesives\, paper\, yarn\, scraps\, easels\, storage containers\, more. Your never-been-used or no-longer-used item could be the solution to someone else’s needs. Attendance is free; no RSVP required. \n*Tables are available to rent for $10\, and we have 10 available. Please limit 1 table per person. Each table is 8’ x 3.5’. You are welcome to BYOT.\nThere is abundant street parking at the Helms Design Center. Set-up will open at 9am. SUMMARY:Book Signing + Talk with April Greiman
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Thursday\, July 8th from 6:30 to 8:30 PM\, please join us for a conversation with April Greiman on the launch of her latest book\, WhiteSpace: April Greiman Photography\, an arresting collection of 34 digital photographs and short writings by 25 women in design\, art\, architecture and poetry\, on the abstract subject of whitespace. “WhiteSpace is like a trip to the desert with April and her wonderful colleagues. A master class in shadow and light\,” writes Laurie Haycock Makela in the foreword.  During the evening\, April will be joined by contributors to the book\, including Frances Anderton\, for a series of readings and insights into April’s use of bold color and negative space\, breaking boundaries in art\, design\, and architecture throughout her career. \nREGISTER HERE \nWith an international reputation in art and design spanning decades\, Greiman’s WhiteSpace is her first self-published book of photography\, and as a result\, is impeccably designed using a variety of papers and textures. This intimate book not only reveals her personal vision of space and light\, but highlights her deep friendships with creative women colleagues. Their extraordinary insights\, combined with Greiman’s sublime imagery\, create a rhythmic meditation on emptiness\, openness\, beauty\, fear\, and a multitude of provocative perceptions. \nWritten contributions by : Lita Albuquerque\, Frances Anderton\, Jan Angevine\, Marian Bantjes\, Lyn Bradford\, Judith Cahen Crouwel\, Donatella Cusmá\, Andrea Dietz\, Tibbie Dunbar\, Kristin Feireiss\, Karin Fong\, Carolien Glazenburg\, Nikki Gonnissen\, Jia Yi Gu\, Karin Hibma\, Gere Kavanaugh\, Suzanne Lacy\, Anette Lenz\, Laurie Haycock Makela\, Ilaria Mazzoleni\, Jennifer Morla\, Kali Nikitas\, Louise Paradis\, Paulette Singley\, Elisabeth Workman \nABOUT APRIL\nTransmedia designer April Greiman has pushed graphic design into new dimensions\, from the built environment to augmented reality (AR). Greiman’s designs are among the first digital graphics ever made\, and her innovative use of advanced digital technology has made her a leader in the design world. \nApril Greiman is a thinker\, designer\, and artist whose transmedia work addresses all areas and scales of design from communications to textiles\, architecture\, and new media. Greiman’s design studio Made in Space is a unique contributor to the design world that challenges interdisciplinary boundaries and investigates the intersection between art and design. Greiman’s publication\, ‘WhiteSpace’ includes her photography and important pieces of written work from 25 women contributors. \nGreiman is currently a tenured professor at University of Southern California (USC) Roski School of Art and Design. \n@aprilgreiman (instagram)

SUMMARY:Extended Studio Exhibition Hours - Low Rise\, Mid Rise\, High Rise: Housing in L.A. Today
DESCRIPTION:Free\nDue to the overwhelming response\, the Low Rise\, Mid Rise\, High Rise: Housing in L.A. Today\, an in-person pop-up exhibition of residential buildings in the pipeline taking place at the Helms Design Center will remain open through the month of July. \nWHEN:  \nOpen Studio Hours: \nFriday\, July 9th from 12:00 to 2:00 PM\nThursday\, July 15th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM\nFriday\, July 16th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM\nThursday\, July 22nd from 1:00 to 4:00 PM\nFriday\, July 23rd from 1:00 to 4:00 PM\nFriday\, July 30th 1:00 to 4:00 PM (Closing Day) \nWhile life slowed down for many Angelenos\, the L.A. cityscape did not stay still. For the past year\, architects and builders have been busy\, working on designs to address L.A.’s biggest need: Housing. And they are doing so in multi-unit buildings\, at multiple scales\, that advance the idea of home. \n30+ design teams will display Low Rise dwellings from ADUs to four-story multifamily dwellings; Mid Rise affordable and market rate housing on transit corridors; High Rise towers for downtown\, Hollywood and the Miracle Mile.  The show is presented by Helms Bakery District in partnership with Cal Poly\, San Luis Obispo LA Metro Program. It is organized by Frances Anderton and Stephen Phillips (Director\, Cal Poly LA Metro). \nWHAT: \nMuch of the public dialogue around housing in Los Angeles today has to do with the politics around it\, and the crisis of homelessness. But while these debates continue\, housing is being built\, in a patchwork of starkly different scales and styles. It is shaped in part by zoning\, code\, and parking requirements\, costly land\, construction and materials\, as well as competing development and neighborhood pressures. Yet despite this web of constraints\, designers are building on the tradition of innovative SoCal living. \nAt Low Rise\, Mid Rise\, High Rise: Housing in L.A. Today visitors will see dense\, high\, multi-unit housing with apartments filled with natural light\, flowing space and a taste of the outside. Projects will demonstrate planning for sociability\, as well as new material and structural solutions to housing affordability. They will show how new developments can still express the distinct and eclectic Los Angeles character. Finally\, visitors will see how the pandemic may have altered planning priorities in the homes of tomorrow. The exhibition will feature models and renderings of projects in design or under construction. Displayed alongside these real-world schemes will be an exhibition of designs by Cal Poly LA Metro students. \nThe pop-up explores what these buildings say about how we live in Los Angeles today. \nWHERE: Studio A\, Helms Design Center at Helms Bakery District\, 8745 Washington Boulevard\, Culver City\, 90232. \nCOVID RESTRICTIONS: To comply with State and County guidelines for public gatherings\, please provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination(s) or mandatory masks will be required upon entry. \nBIG THANKS to the participating architects and designers:\nBaumgartner + Uriu; Bestor Architecture; Brooks +Scarpa Architects & Plant Prefab; Bureau Spectacular; Byben; City Design Studio; Clive Wilkinson Architects; Connect Homes; Design\, Bitches; Egan / Simon Architecture; Eric Owen Moss Architects; Gensler; Keating Architecture; kdA Kevin Daly Architects; KFA Architecture; Koning Eizenberg; Lance Collins (Partner Energy); LA Más; Lehrer Architects; Lorcan O’Herlihy (LOHA); Michael Anderson (Anderson-Barker); Michael W. SUMMARY:Treehouse and the Building of Community with Prophet Walker\, Jason E.C. Wright and Frances Anderton
DESCRIPTION:Free\nWith the 2019 opening of Treehouse Hollywood\, a lush\, urban oasis with eclectic interior design\, co-founder Prophet Walker set a high bar for co-living in Los Angeles. But this is only the start of big plans for development aimed at building a sense of community\, in Los Angeles and beyond. \nOn Thursday\, June 24th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM\, please join us in conversation with Prophet Walker\, Jason E.C. Wright and Frances Anderton where we will talk about Treehouse Hollywood\, the rollout of more locations and future concepts for multifamily living. \nSharing the stage with Walker will be Treehouse resident Jason E.C. Wright\, founder of Burntsienna Research Society\, a design research consultancy. Wright will talk about his experience building “family” at Treehouse during the pandemic\, and will answer your questions about what it’s like to share a house with 60 people! \nWalker will also talk about how growing up in public housing informed his thinking about residential design\, and his work on the redesign of Jordan Downs\, the public housing apartment complex in Watts\, Los Angeles\, currently undergoing a $1 billion redevelopment. \nTreehouse Koreatown is currently on display at Low Rise\, Mid Rise\, High: Housing in LA Today inside the Helms Design Center. It is designed by The California Office with creative direction by Sean Knibb. \n \nABOUT PROPHET\nProphet Walker\, Co-Founder and CEO of Treehouse\, grew up in South LA\, where amidst poverty\, violence\, and homelessness in his neighborhood\, community was always at its core. \nProphet is deeply involved with both criminal justice and education reform and served on multiple non-profit and civic boards. In 2014\, Prophet ran for the California State Assembly\, coming in second. This passion for reform was triggered by his personal experience of being incarcerated at 16 and sentenced to spend six years within an adult prison. While incarcerated\, he started a state-wide program that allowed inmates to earn a two-year college degree\, and today thousands of inmates participate in the program. Prophet was one of the program’s first graduates to come home and he attended Loyola Marymount University\, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering. In 2015\, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama invited Prophet to attend the State of the Union to honor his efforts to reform our criminal justice system and for his commitment to our children. \nProphet’s experiences surrounding community strength and human connectedness inspired him to create Treehouse\, recognizing the power of community in proximity and shared humanity. Prophet leads the company day to day\, with a focus on acquisitions research\, property selection\, and investor relations. \n \nABOUT JASON \nJason E.C. Wright is the Founder of Burntsienna Research Society\, a critical-thinking research consultancy for design histories\, intangible culture\, and reference materials. Jason is Indiana born and raised\, who now considers Los Angeles home. Jason is an accomplished designer\, researcher\, writer\, with 20+ years as a retail and fashion professional\, who takes his love of books seriously\, serving as librarian-in-residence at home in Treehouse Hollywood.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Textile Arts Hosts a Conversation + Book Signing\, Material and Mind with Christopher Bardt
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO AN UNDETERMINED FUTURE DATE.\nOn Wednesday\, March 25th from 7:30 to 9:00 pm (Doors at 7:00 pm)\, please join us in welcoming Textile Arts Los Angeles and Christopher Bardt\, AIA for practiceLAB\, a conversation and in-depth exploration of the interaction between mind and material world\, mediated by language\, image\, and making—in design\, the arts\, culture\, and science. \nIn Material and Mind\, Christopher Bardt delves deeply into the interaction of mind and material world\, mediated by language\, image\, and the process of making. He examines thought not as something “pure” and autonomous but as emerging from working with material\, and he identifies this as the source of imagination and creative insight. This takes place as much in such disciplines as cognitive science\, anthropology\, and poetry as it does in the more obvious painting\, sculpture\, and design. In some fields\, the medium of work is\, in fact\, the very medium of thinking—as fabric is for the tailor. \nDrawing on the philosophical notions of the “extended mind” and the “enactive mind\,” and looking beyond the world of material-based arts\, Bardt investigates the realms in which material and mind interweave through metaphor\, representation\, projection\, analogues\, tools\, and models. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nChristopher Bardt has over 25 years of experience as an architect and professor of architecture at RISD. He is a founding principal of 3sixØ Architecture\, which Architectural Record named one of 10 leading vanguard firms worldwide in 2002. His extensive professional experience includes furniture design\, residential\, commercial and institutional commissions and planning studies\, ranging from small urban interventions to large-scale metropolitan development. Bardt has been a member of the Architecture faculty at RISD since 1988. He has been a visiting professor at Cornell University\, the National Academy of Design and Art\, Slovakia and the China Academy of Art and has served on the Board of Governors of the RISD Museum. Bardt holds a BArch from RISD and a MArch from Harvard University. \nFOR MORE INFO + TICKETS

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Play! A Screen Print Weekend with Carrie Burckle\, Inspired by Sarajo Frieden
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO AN UNDETERMINED FUTURE DATE. \nOn Saturday and Sunday\, March 14th and 15th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm\, please join us in hosting Textile Arts LA’s Carrie Burckle for a weekend-long screen printing workshop where you’ll explore chance and improvisation as playful strategies incorporating collage\, stamping\, cut outs\, and painting for designing prints. \nYou will discover relationships in line\, shape and color as your shapes and patterns unfold\, meander and snake back in on themselves\, creating new relationships and connections. You may explore mono prints\, cutout shapes\, appliqué ideas\, and more.  Sister Corita Kent says\,  “Consider/regard everything an experiment”. And “Nothing is a mistake”. \nThe weekend will be an immersion in play\, in freeing up blocked energy and exploring intuition and improvisational strategies.  Students will create stencils for mono printing and over printing onto any cloth scraps\, up cycled clothes\, misshapen cuts\, for use singularly or for extended quilts\, patchwork\, appliqué etc.  There are no preconceived outcomes\, only potential for further investigations. One exercise will include a print exchange\, where each student will receive a print from each of the other students\, creating an overprinted\, collage piece. \nFOR TICKETS \nWear comfortable clothing\, shoes\, and an apron. You will be standing on a concrete floor when printing. Comfortable shoes are a must. \n*We will take a lunch break: students are welcome to step outside for a quick walk to The Co-Op Market / Deli or one of the restaurants in the Helms Complex\, or bring your own lunch. \nThis class is intended for fine artists\, designers\, painters\, printmakers\, surface designers and general enthusiasts. Class size limited to 10. Students of all levels welcome. \nMATERIALS PROVIDED FOR USE: Small handheld screens\, inks\, squeegees/spreaders\, plastic sheet stencils\, several cotton fabrics\, including the fabric intended for the shared overprinting exercise. We encourage you to bring your own pre-laundered natural fiber fabrics\, patches\, off cuts or clothing\, as this practice lends itself well to piece work / collage. Printing tables are 4ft x 8ft\, with some of the 8 ft length used for material prep. $25 material fee payable to instructor at the class\, please! \nCarrie Burckle is an artist\, designer\, and educator. She has a BFA in Textile Design\, as well as an MFA in Fibers from CSULB\, where she has taught for the past 17 years. She is also a co-founder of Textile Arts LA. \nMore on Sarajo Frieden HERE.

SUMMARY:How String Changed the World! A Conversation with Artist and Educator Cameron Taylor-Brown
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, February 12th from 7:30 to 9:00 pm (Doors at 7:00 pm)\, please join us in welcoming Textile Arts Los Angeles and Cameron Taylor-Brown for practiceLAB\, an artist conversation – How String Changed The World: An Exploration of Fiber\, Culture\, and Human Ingenuity. \nTraces of ancient flax – colored\, twisted\, spun and cut – show that textiles were already an integral part of human life 35\,000 years ago. Discover why humans first twisted fibers into thread\, and how this invention revolutionized early cultures. Track the history of flax\, wool\, silk and cotton in the ancient world\, view textiles through Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs\, and explore how string and textiles are woven into language and identity. We’ll follow the presentation with a hands-on exercise where participants will ply their own string and make their own cloth – and in the process discover why using the fiber arts as a vehicle for self-discovery and innovation is so satisfying. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nCameron Taylor-Brown was introduced to textiles by artist Ed Rossbach at UC Berkeley\, studied design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (PCT&S) and worked as a fabric stylist in New York. She subsequently taught textile design and worked as an exhibition curator at PCT&S. Since 1985\, Taylor-Brown has lived in Los Angeles\, where she founded ARTSgarage\, a textile resource center. Her work is widely exhibited and is featured in publications including American Craft Magazine\, Fiber Art Now\, Handwoven and Shuttle\, Spindle and Dyepot. She teaches workshops at ARTSgarage\, schools\, guilds\, museums and conferences throughout the United States and Canada. She is a past president of California Fibers and on the advisory boards of the Fowler Textile Council and Textile Arts | Los Angeles. \nFOR INFO + TICKETS

SUMMARY:practiceLAB: Textile Arts Explores Meaningful Art Practices
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, January 29th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm\, please join us for Mindful and Meaningful: Exploring the Synergies Between Textile Waste and Fine Art Practice\, Textile Arts LA‘s inaugural session of practiceLAB\, featuring talks from artists\, architects\, designers\, and creatives. \nIn this session\, we are treated to a discussion of how artists and designers can work together to create a more sustainable future. Three Los Angeles based artists share their diverse practices and individual experiences\, creating responsible objects that honor the past and endure in the future. \nIf you attended the October Textile Slam you were treated to a sneak preview of this talk. We’re thrilled to invite the trio back for a longer form discussion of this critical topic: questions of sustainability\, reuse\, and upcycling are necessary considerations. Please join this lively presentation and discussion showcasing how three artists are responding. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \n \nRenae Barnard is a multi-disciplinary artist interested in exploring the network of interactions between environment\, perception\, and well-being. Using found materials and waste from the furniture manufacturing industry\, Barnard received her Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Graduate University and her BA from California State University\, Los Angeles. Barnard has recently completed projects in cooperation with the National Immigration Law Center and the City of Santa Monica Department of Cultural Affairs. She is a recipient of the Sue Arlen Walker and Harvey M. Parker Memorial Fellowship\, the Armory Center for the Arts Teaching Artist Fellowship\, The Ahmanson Annual Fellowship\, Lincoln Fellowship Award\, and Christopher Street West Art and Culture Grant. \n \nChuck Hohng is a Korean American artist\, born in Long Beach California. Chuck spent fourteen years of his early life in his family’s native South Korea. He received his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Art Center College of Design. His early childhood exposure to Catholic practice and a bicultural household furthered interests in vanitas\, identities\, symbols\, and rituals. Chuck makes a range of fiber artworks from teddy bears to haute couture hanbok. Exploring salvaged textiles connections to love and loss\, Chuck’s artworks give a physical body to intellectual and emotional experiences. He believes we can always grow out of the mud\, lift ourselves above the murky water and bloom. \n \nAneesa Shami received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in both Fiber and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute. Aneesa’s work speaks to a broader understanding that we are all fundamentally human. She tries to utilize universal themes that are inclusive\, referencing the sublime\, and an otherworldly sense of the human conscious and subconscious. A love for repetitive mark-making drives her practice. Multiple strands of yarn\, strips of felt\, and even pen strokes build depth and density in each piece. Layers of material and process combine to lend the impression that there is more than what the eye sees. She recently completed a residency at the Helms Design Center\, is currently researching textile and fiber history and is completing large sculptural pieces in her current body of work\, Syndication.

SUMMARY:A New Vision for the Westside\, a Panel Discussion with WUF
DESCRIPTION:Will the Westside change dramatically or will plans maintain the status quo? On Friday\, November 22nd from 7:15 to 9:00 am\, please join Westside Urban Forum’s breakfast discussion inside the Helms Design Center. \nOne of the many results of the failed\, but influential\, Measure S of 2017 was the City of Los Angeles’s pledge to hasten its historically slow process of updating Community Plans. The stakes have never been higher\, with climate change\, traffic\, the housing crisis\, and myriad other forces bearing down on the Westside. \nWhile the City’s General Plan Framework Element establishes citywide principles for growth and development\, its Community Plans collectively comprise the bedrock of urban planning\, from visionary aspirations down to neighborhood-specific details. The Department of City Planning has completed several Community Plans since 2015 and is now working on its first four Westside updates: West Los Angeles\, Palms/Mar Vista/Del Rey\, Venice\, and Westchester/Playa del Rey. The planning process is being accelerated – to three years rather than what has historically taken up to a decade. All of which may add up to a spirited\, and necessary\, discussion about the future of the community – and a challenge for the city to mediate. \nThis month at WUF\, they will discuss the community planning process\, get a status update on the Westside plans\, and hear about the city’s initial vision for the future of the Westside. They will interrogate the processes for recently updated plans to learn how Westside stakeholders can share their visions with the city and discuss how the plans might respond to the re:codeLA project. Meanwhile\, the plans will have to respond to new state and regional mandates concerning housing targets and\, of course\, will undergo scrutiny from stakeholders\, the City Planning Commission\, and City Council. \nPANELISTS\nShana Bonstin\, Dep. SUMMARY:Designing Community Experiences with AIGA
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, November 20th from 6:45 to 9:00 pm\, please join us in welcoming AIGA for a reception and panel discussion that tackles the topic of  Designing Community Experiences. \nWhile technology increasingly becomes more integrated into our lives\, we still need human connection.
