SUMMARY:Westside Urban Forum Hosts Virtual Panel Discussion - Accounting for COVID: Rescuing Our Municipal Budgets
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, June 23 at 1:00 PM\, please join Westside Urban Forum for a virtual panel discussion: Accounting for COVID:  Rescuing Our Municipal Budgets. \nCities are facing an historic financial crisis alongside the COVID-19 health crisis\, with the bread-and-butter sources of local revenue such as sales and hotel taxes having dried up virtually overnight\, and only recently showing signs of a (partial) rebound.  Wealthier municipalities modestly impacted by previous downturns\, such as Santa Monica and Beverly Hills\, are already cutting personnel and programs at an unprecedented scale. \nThe cumulative budget deficit from municipal and State tax revenues lost to COVID-19 is estimated to be as much as $950 billion across the country. Replicating the Great Recession playbook of budget-cutting and temporary revenue enhancements may not be enough to dig out this time around\, and risks prolonging the length of a full economic recovery by several years. \nThis panel focuses on three urgent topics: (1) How much worse will it get\, and what can we expect any recovery to look like (V\, W\, L\, or checkmark-shaped)? (2) What strategies can local governments/public agencies use to address their widening budget holes and mitigate the fallout? and (3) can we count on the federal government to backfill City and State lost revenues through a CARES Act Phase 4 rescue package? \nWUF is pleased to welcome LA City Controller Ron Galperin\, Shavi Sarna\, a financial advisor specializing in public-sector restructurings\, and Jeff Kiernan\, who manages regional support for legislation\, regulations and ballot measures for the League of California Cities. \nPanelists\nRon Galperin\, City Controller\, City of Los Angeles\,\nJeff Kiernan\, Regional Public Affairs Manager\, League of California Cities\nShavi Sarna\, Senior Vice President\, Ernst & Young\, Restructuring Advisory Services \nModerator\nTeifion Rice-Evans\, Managing Principal\, Economic and Planning Systems \nSuggested Contribution\n$10 Members\n$15 Nonmembers \nClick HERE to make a contribution.  Thank you! \nClick HERE to register. \nZoom information will be sent to all participants on the morning of June 23rd.

SUMMARY:Westside Urban Forum Virtual Discussion: After the Pandemic\, How L.A.'s Restaurants and Retail Will Heal
DESCRIPTION:Free\nOn Wednesday\, June 10th from 2:00 to 3:10 pm. please join Westside Urban Forum in a special\, socially distanced series of online discussions: After the Pandemic\, How L.A.’s Restaurants and Retail Will Heal.  \n Though the Los Angeles region is justly famous for its dining and shopping options\, many stores and restaurants have been operating on thin margins in recent years. Stores have competed with online retailers\, and restaurants have faced rising rents and increased costs. And then the Coronavirus pandemic. \nThe economic devastation to local businesses\, many of which are cornerstones of L.A. civic life and local character\, is evident already. How can these businesses recover? What combination of rent relief\, government assistance\, creativity\, and civic spirit will ensure that they thrive? Will local planners have to rethink their approaches to “activating” ground floors\, and will local cities need to rezone retail units to allow for more uses if incumbent businesses fail and are not replaced? How else might changes to commerce reshape our neighborhoods in the short and long term?  \nPanelists\nMichael J. Berne\, President\, MJB Consulting\nDeborah Kahen\, Senior City Planner\, City of Los Angeles\nJosh Loeb\, Owner\, Rustic Canyon Group\nWally Marks\, President\, WNM Realty \nModerator\nZachary Tindall\, Managing Director\, Streetsense \nWUF is pleased to present this event at no charge\, but it requires registration to participate via Zoom. Donations are gratefully accepted. Please click here to make a donation. \nClick HERE to register. Zoom information will be sent to all participants on the morning of June 10th.
