Behind The Glitter: a portrait of los angeles

A Helms Design District photo exhibition curated by Anthony Nex and Al Quattrocchi

A photo exhibition that strips away the polished image to reveal the real Los Angeles—a city shaped by resilience, hard work, and the dreams of its richly diverse population. This visual exploration dives into the city’s true core, highlighting the cultures and communities that form its backbone.

Through the lens of everyday Angelenos—those rarely spotlighted by mainstream media—you will see everyday people who weave the fabric of this complex and diverse city.

The images embrace the complexity of life in L.A., capturing moments both raw and remarkable. They reflect a city where beauty and struggle coexist, where chaos and creativity intertwine. This exhibition seeks to tell an unfiltered story of the City of Angels: sprawling, imperfect, but endlessly resilient—a true global crossroads.

Art Exhibition by John Maloney – Assemblage

Experience the fusion of architecture and fine art in a special showcase by architect John Maloney. This compelling exhibition highlights his assemblage of work, offering a rare glimpse into how design principles transcend structure and become expressive works of art. With a lifetime in architecture and building construction, John Maloney brings a deep reverence for form, function, and found objects. In Assemblage, he transforms discarded materials into thoughtful compositions, organizing shapes, textures, and symbols into works that speak to balance, reuse, and beauty. “I make it because I have to,” Maloney says. By rescuing and reimagining materials destined for the waste stream, the artist offers a vision that is both civic and soulful.

Film Screening:

Søren Pihlmann: Make Materials Matter

2025 / 54 min / Denmark
Director: Marc-Christoph Wagner, Simon Weyhe
LA Premiere

Presented in partnership with the Architecture & Design Film Festival, please join us for a screening of Søren Pihlmann: Make Materials Matter. This film celebrates innovation in architecture, design, and urban culture and will be looping throughout the day inside the Helms Design Center.

Last Showing: 5:00 pm

ABOUT THE FILM

The global construction industry uses far too many resources and emits too much CO2. Far too often, buildings are demolished and materials thrown away to build new houses. Not only is this approach unsustainable from a sustainability perspective; it also overlooks the potential, not to mention the poetry, that is present in what exists. In recent years, this discussion about how we live, build and design our physical surroundings has gained a distinct Danish voice that is gaining global attention. Through several projects, architect Søren Pihlmann has demonstrated how houses can be transformed by reusing their inherent materials. In 2025, Søren Pihlmann curated the Danish Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale – a building that needed both climate protection and an overall upgrade. The renovation itself thus became an experimental exhibition that showed how the materials themselves helped to create the pavilion’s future.

Projecting Possibilities Artist Joel Gomez

Close out your evening by heading over to view our Projecting Possibilities series, a digital public art program launched during the pandemic in partnership with Culver Arts to celebrate our creative community. Each month, a different local artist’s work is projected street-side on the entry doors to the Helms Design Center transforming the exterior into an outdoor gallery.

For October, we feature Joel Gomez, a Culver Arts grant recipient whose work will be on view nightly from October 1–31. The projections are visible from the sidewalk and easily accessible to the public, offering an art experience that is both immersive and community-driven.

Helms Hole-in-One:
A Mini Golf Art Experience

Putt your way through the artsiest six holes you’ve ever seen! Join us for Helms Hole-in-One, a playful pop-up mini golf course in the heart of the Helms Design District, created just for the Art Walk Festival. This six-hole course isn’t your average putting green. Each hole is a mini masterpiece, inspired by the tools, textures, and messes of the creative art process itself. From paint-splattered ramps to pencil forests and canvas-covered obstacles, every hole brings a different artist supply to life and invites you to interact, laugh, and (maybe) land that perfect putt. Come Play a Round!

Whether you’re here to play, snap pics, or just walk through, this is your chance to experience design, art, and fun, one stroke at a time.

Location: Helms Design District, on Washington Blvd. between Pasta Sisters and Arcana Books
