Projecting Possibilities, a digital public art project launched during the pandemic, returns to showcase local artists and to celebrate our rich, creative community. Helms Design District, in partnership with Culver Arts, will feature a new artist each month, projecting their artwork street-side on the entry doors to the Helms Design Center at 8745 Washington Boulevard in Culver City. With easy community viewing, this outdoor gallery’s projections can be viewed from 8:00 pm until 2:00 am. Rita C. Szopinski is the Culver Arts grant recipient for the month of April. Her work will be displayed from April 2nd through April 30th.

ABOUT RITA
Rita C. Szopinski was born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan. At the young age of 22, her job with the airlines transferred her to South Florida where she remained until she and her husband moved to Culver City in April of 2022, to be closer to both of their sons. Rita always loved art and would jump at the chance of going to any art festival. She supported artists by purchasing and displaying many pieces of art within her home.

It wasn’t until the latter part of 2006, that she was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. That diagnosis led her to an organization founded by Gene Wilder for his wife, Gilda Radner, who passed away from ovarian cancer. Gilda’s Club of South Florida provided a refuge for anyone touched by cancer. During her treatment, Rita joined Gilda’s and found that there was a watercolor painting class each week. Every Monday, for two hours, she learned about watercolor paint, brushes, and “happy accidents.”

Encouraged by others, she joined several art guilds in the area and became very involved. Serving as a board member and gallery director opened up a new world of art. Rita was President of Florida Watercolor Society in 2017, an organization of over 1,000 members. She was on the Florida board for nine years.

Her art has been on display in various museums, such as the Mennello Museum of American Art in Orlando , Coral Springs Museum of Art, Gadsden Museum of Art, Art Center Manatee, Art Center Sarasota and the Leepa-Rattner Museum in Tarpon Springs. She has won many awards and has been juried into many prestigious exhibitions. Her artwork is found in private homes and businesses throughout the United States.

Rita is drawn to telling a story with strong subject matter and light. She does not limit herself to any one subject and is always exploring new possibilities.

“I believe everyone has a special talent; you just have to look for it.” – Rita C. Szopinski
